I think it is probably best to have your Thai bank convert to US$ rather than your US bank. US banks hardly ever deal with TH ฿ so it's not convenient for them whereas Thai banks often deal with the US$ because it's effectively the global currency. You will likely get a better exchange rate from the Thai banks. Dee Money seems to be the most popular 3rd party to provide transfer of funds to US. You can probably easily find their rates and fees online. Just make sure that Dee Money and your Thai bank tell you exactly how much in US$ you will receive into your US account so you can fairly evaluate their costs.

It depends...... If you have a work permit and a job, I think the Thai banks will give you a "charge card" which I assume is a credit card. If you don't have a job you can still get a credit card but only if it is tied to a bank account. The card's outstanding balance will not be allowed to be greater than the balance in the account. There will be no bank fees for making purchases using this credit card, however some merchants may charge a higher price if you pay with the credit card. Another alternative is using a debit card from a Thai bank. It's very simple to set up and use. The only fee is an annual fee of up to about 200-300 ฿. You can only spend the balance that is in the account. A foreign Visa card will work in many stores but there will be some that don't accept them. Also, your foreign bank will often add a 1-3% fee for purchases outside your home country. Generally Visa's exchange rate is slightly lower than the rate offered by the better exchange outlets.

I've only done 1 ATM withdrawal with my Schwab Visa debit card in Dec '21. The ฿ was much higher then. I received 16K ฿ from the ATM but I think the ATM requested a withdrawal of 16,220 ฿ to include the extra fee for using foreign debit card. $484.61 was withdrawn for the 16,220 ฿. As in your case I was given a credit of $6.57 for the extra 220 ฿ withdrawn. I would calculate my exchange rate as 16220/484.61 = 33.4702. To check that rate I also see that 220 ฿ / 6.57 = 33.4855 which is different probably due to round off error.
