Is it possible to have Wi-Fi and Ethernet (fiber) on same computer?
gamb00ler replied to Daffy D's topic in IT and Computers
Having multiple paths to your network router is not an issue at all.... at least on a Mac. Thankfully, I've completely healed from the damage that Windows inflicted on me and no longer remember much about that mess. Change the order of the network services your Mac uses If you connect to the internet or a network in several different ways (using Wi-Fi or Ethernet, for example), you can change the order of the network connections your computer tries when you connect. If you have multiple active connections, your computer tries the one at the top of the list first, then tries the others in descending order. You can’t change the order of virtual private network (VPN) connections because they already take priority over non-VPN connections. -
I thought the OP was pretty clear about what his concerns are. I guess OP thinks homosexuality is something you can "catch" and one vector of infection is TV shows.

Does using a VPN impact online banking?
gamb00ler replied to BananaBandit's topic in IT and Computers
Since Schwab accepts international customers from Thailand, I assumed that a VPN was not required to access my US based Schwab account. For over 3 years I have had no issued connecting to Schwab without a VPN. -
Wire Out from Bangkok Bank Question
gamb00ler replied to SamKent's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
It would serve you well if you learn how to find the answers to your questions by checking the bank's websites and DeeMoney's also. -
Service from FBU Manila is dreadful. When I send an email asking more than one question I receive an answer that is somewhat relevant to the first question but not exactly what I asked. Any other question in the email is ignored completely. I turned 70 in August '23 so I applied online on May 7 for my benefits to start in September. I got the phone call on June 2. Then complete radio silence until the middle of December when they said they referred my application to a supervisor. The application was approved on Dec. 27. The benefit was determined to be about $350 less than the detailed SSA calculator showed. I immediately emailed Manila and on Jan. 3 my benefit was corrected to match SSA's calculator. My wife's entitled to SSA on her own US work record and her application is proceeding even more slowly than mine did. Her application submitted online early July '23... and finally she has been scheduled for the phone call Jan. 16 '24. Her application is simpler than mine. I am pretty sure that Manila does nothing more complicated than checking over the applications and then forwarding them to the Baltimore office for the real work. If I ask them anything more complicated than the status of my application, their answer is lacking in detail and accuracy.

Wire Out from Bangkok Bank Question
gamb00ler replied to SamKent's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Wise does not provide outbound transfers from Thailand. Bangkok bank has an excellent web site with lots of details about international transfers. Link: https://www.bangkokbank.com/en/Personal/Other-Services/Transfers/Transferring-Out-of-Thailand The bank does ask for a reason. My friend had to jump through hoops when he did a transfer to US. I recommend you use a rather generic reason such as support for family. There are some constraints on how much you can send per transaction. I believe you can do an international transfer from within Bangkok bank's smartphone app. -

U.S. Social Security SSA-1099 Tax Form Received 2023
gamb00ler replied to bamnutsak's topic in US & Canada Topics and Events
I've used OLT for a free online tax filing service. Last year I finished our taxes before the IRS started accepting them and OLT held them until IRS was ready. We structure our income to nudge right up to the boundary where the US tax rate becomes greater than 0. I use the Excel spreadsheet made available as donationware to calculate how much IRA withdrawal to make each tax year. About 4 years ago, I compared the spreadsheet output with what the TurboTax software gave. The numbers were in complete agreement. Cheapest/Best Way to Water My Lawn? (not including water price)

Why focus on the cheapest? Often for a few ฿ more you can save a lot of effort. -

For sure you're right.... if Earth's population was only a few hundred thousand, there wouldn't be any noticeable man made climate change. Let's give every soul a sequentially numbered lotto ticket and those that don't end in 29864718 must commit suicide. -
U.S. Social Security SSA-1099 Tax Form Received 2023
gamb00ler replied to bamnutsak's topic in US & Canada Topics and Events
I am a compulsive record keeper so I usually know ALL my inflows by Jan 2 or so. However, this year SSA threw me a curve ball and finally approved my application for benefits that I filed in June '23. Between Christmas and New Years they notified me that they would pay my back benefits. That approval was dated Dec. 27, but the payment didn't hit the bank until Jan. 3. Now, I'm not sure if SSA considers that I received the back pay in '23 or '24. It's good to hear that those 1099's are provided quickly after the new year. I like to submit my very simple tax forms (online) as soon as the IRS starts accepting them. -
Where to park the 800,000 THB?
gamb00ler replied to Hanaguma's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
You most likely can either get back all the Thai tax that has been withheld from your interest by filing a Thai tax form OR you can get the banks to stop the withholding by providing them a Thai tax ID #. Some posters have not been successful at the later approach, but it seemed to be no problem when I did it at SCB, Bangkok bank and Kasikorn. EDIT: despite dire warnings that I must wear long pants, shoes and socks when dealing with Thai banks.... I was successful while wearing my cargo shorts and sandals. -

gamb00ler replied to Hanaguma's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
My experience with SCB EZ account does not at all resemble your experience. SCB gave me (for 1-200 ฿!) a statement covering all the months required for the retirement extension. I do request a free monthly statement (via the phone app) as well but that's just for my own records. CM Immigration gave me the extension but it did seem I waited longer than the others in the Imm. office that day. -

gamb00ler replied to Hanaguma's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Same for me as it was for @Gweiloman... an official (stamped and initialed) bank statement covering the preceding 12 months was acceptable to CM Immigration for my retirement extension. -
Thailand to abolish hefty import tariff on wine
gamb00ler replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
It's a "targeted" tax... and the target happens to be primarily foreigners either as tourists or expats. Some consider that racism or at least the shadow of racism. Maybe it should be called wealthism. There are similar taxes in wealthier countries. For instance local governments impose hotel room, car rental or airport taxes so they can raise money from people other than their constituents. Isn't that some of of -ism, also? -
My wife takes 87.5µg Euthyrox daily (1.75 * 50µg). She was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism 15 years ago and had her thyroid destroyed by taking some form of radioactive Iodine. She was initially treated by Dr. Thepe in Bangkok and then by a wonderful endocrinologist in USA. I don't remember what they set her initial dosage to be but it soon settled in the 85-90 range. She weighs about 60kg. She hasn't had the weight gain problem. It's a real nuisance that the thyroid hormone is only available in 50 and 100 dosages here in Thailand. My wife is getting to be an expert in pill cutting. It's so much easier with the dosages available in US:

I hope you don't own a business! You clearly don't have much knowledge about how that part of the economy works. Does an organization expend resources to conduct a poll just for fun? I don't think so. Polling organizations do so because they hope to get something in return for their effort. News media hope to gain readership, Opinium hopes to turn a profit by getting paid by other entities, universities/colleges conduct polls to gain information and experience for their students and staff. Political organizations are the usual suspects that discard/hide unflattering polls. They don't mind the wasted money/resources..... it's somebody else's.
