  1. Are you claiming that @peterfranks isn't allowed to reduce his income by up to 60K (if married) for the personal allowance, or the insurance premium allowance? I don't get the point of your post.
  2. I don't see in the webpage I provided that those deductions are restricted to wages/earned income. The document mostly states that "taxpayers" are eligible for most of those deductions. Only the very first deduction (Employment Expenses) listed on that page is restricted to wages/earned income. If @peterfranks has paid or accrued taxes on his interest income is he not a taxpayer? I see that they call some of the reductions in taxable income deductions and some are called allowances. The deductions are primarily against wages but the allowances are for anyone to use. So Peter would be eligible for 60K personal allowance and his health and life insurance premium up to 100K and charitable donations. Horses mouth: https://www.rd.go.th/english/6045.html
  3. @peterfranks https://taxsummaries.pwc.com/thailand/individual/deductions#:~:text=Personal allowances,born in or after 2018.
  4. I don't think that is accurate. Certainly you are limited to 3000฿ if the exemption for the first 20K in interest is the only exemption/deduction for which you are eligible. However, they are many other deductions that can be applied against the interest income that exceeds that 20K limit.
  5. That reminds me..... I'm going to insist my next doctor has some plumbing experience.
  6. I considered that, but she's 81 and computer illiterate.
  7. Thanks @Thailand J. In those instructions it clearly states that SS benefits are US sourced income but NOT considered ECI, so tax rate is 30% on 85% of benefit amount. The bottom line is that my landlady won't get any of the withholding money back by filing 1040-NR.
  8. Some of them have begun to run (We're looking at you, Josh!)
  9. My landlady asked me to help her send a fax to US. Our conversation then turned to other US related financial matters. She worked in US for 15 years but never became a citizen and then moved back to Thailand. She gave up her green card also. She has been receiving her SS benefits for many years (15+). The IRS is withholding ~25% because she is a non-resident alien. She has never filed taxes since moving back to Thailand. I read parts of several IRS publications about taxation of Non Resident Aliens who receive income from US. I believe that if she files a 1040-NR she will be refunded a substantial portion of the money withheld. She will probably get more than half of it back. Here comes the technical portion ???? SSA benefits are classified as ECI income (Effectively Connected Income) and are therefor taxed using the same tax rates as for citizens. IRS Pub 519, Chapter 4 states that ECI "income, after allowable deductions, is taxed at graduated rates. These are the same rates that apply to US citizens and residents." Chapter 5 of the same Pub 519 states that nonresident Aliens CANNOT claim the standard deduction. (Ouch!) She will have no deductions. Tax brackets are roughly 10% on 1st 10,000 and then 12% on next 30,000. So her net tax rate will probably be around 11%. I hope there are no gaping holes. She has been a very helpful landlady and I'd like to see her only pay her correct taxes.
  10. Some pictures of Linedekor polystyrene trim installed. Some examples have one coat of paint, and others two.
  11. Please post the link used to retrieve the new rates.
  12. It appears to be solid. I'll see if I can snap up a trim piece that has been discarded and test its resistance to minor blows such as from a mop, chair leg, etc. It is secured to the wall with glue and a few very small nails. It appears to be very smooth, probably more smooth than wood trim. I think it's going to look fine. They are spraying the trim starting 1 or 2 days ago. If you like you can browse through my 600+ build photos stored on a Google drive --> https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1TZl0zFX_2lk5xOQ_jXofs4zMF7MLffhl?usp=sharing The house started in Sep and should finish in mid August. I'll be at the site again tomorrow and will get a close up shot for you.
  13. I started a thread in May '22 here: https://aseannow.com/topic/1260066-painting-upvc-interior-trim/ Our CM builder had quite a few samples from that manufacturer so we got our trim needs sorted fairly quickly. It's already up and looks pretty good. They're in the process of spray painting it now so all trim matches the doors and the future plantation shutters. For some reason, our builder installed the door and window trim with a setback of maybe 1cm from the edge of window opening and from the door frame. Is that standard in Thailand? It's not a problem because we opted to just paint that thin strip the same color as the trim itself. LINEDEKOR E-CATALOG 2019.pdf
  14. In the long-running thread, "Diary of a farang in Issan", a poster referred to another long-running thread and used the phrase "Footrot flats". I was interested to find that thread so I used a Google search to find it on the aseannow.com site. The link that I provided in this thread was the only relevant response returned by Google in that search. In the end, I did not locate the thread that the other poster mentioned.
  15. Sorry... I should have been smart enough to include the link in question. https://aseannow.com/topic/1082509-man-wants-to-sue-parents-for-giving-birth-to-him-without-his-consent/
  16. I got the error message shown below after using Google search of aseannow.com for "Footrot flats". I clicked on the link to the topic and this popped up. I was able to view the thread using Google's cached version.
  17. Thanks.... they sure do have an extensive offering of metal goods. They have textured stainless sheets but not quite what I was looking for. I may switch to using the hair line texture if quilted remains unobtainable except by import.
  18. We would like to use the patterned stainless steel for our backsplash in our new house. Our well known and competent builder is unable to locate quilted stainless steel. Anyone encountered the product locally or know a likely source ? I prefer not to import it myself. Thanks
  19. As usual, @Pib has provided a very detailed explanation of how to get your mySSA account set up from Thailand without a US mobile number. Were you an investigative reporter in your previous life?
  20. And you KNOW this because.....? I hope your answer isn't "it's obvious". I don't think you have answered or even asked an equally important question: are children with two fathers or mothers in a poorer or better situation than those with only one parent with a same sex lover/partner? I think that question is the better one to ask if you want to have an informed understanding of the same sex marriage issue.
  21. You state you have multiple drives from your old windows server. I hope they were not configured in a RAID structure. If that's the case getting access to your data would be a real challenge. Assuming no RAID, please give a few more details. Do you remember if you were using Windows Drive Extender? If yes, that will probably complicate any recovery. How are you connecting the drives to the computer? If you can, I suggest boot without any extra drives connected and then connect them as external drives via USB.
  22. You should "move" to a country that has a Social Security Agreement with Canada. USA is one of those. After "moving" you would not be subjected to any withholding but would be paying income tax in USA but none in Canada. Quote from Services Canada web site: If you live outside Canada and are not considered a Canadian resident for income tax purposes, we withhold a non-resident tax from your monthly Old Age Security payments. The tax rate is 25% unless reduced or exempted by a tax treaty between Canada and your country of residence. There are ways to reduce your tax obligation on OAS, but I am not sure under what conditions that can be accomplished. You would need to file an election under Section 216. Perhaps start at: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/international-non-residents/individuals-leaving-entering-canada-non-residents/non-residents-canada.html Link to Canada/Thai tax treaty: https://www.canada.ca/en/department-finance/programs/tax-policy/tax-treaties/country/thailand-convention-1984.html
