Thai PM Pressured to Dissolve House Over Skyrocketing Power Costs
phetphet replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Playing golf? Wow! That is some recovery from last year. But dissolving the House? Looks like some people just can't wait to get their noses in the trough. and that's the biggest problem here, most politicians seem to be in it for themselves rather than the country. Getting to be the same in many countries nowadays. Public service? Pfff. What's in it for me? -

Foreign Tourist Performs Dangerous Motorcycle Stunt on Koh Samui
phetphet replied to Georgealbert's topic in Koh Samui News
I call bullsh*t on the guy's excuse that he didn't realise it was illegal to drive like that. I can't imagine it is legal anywhere to do wheelies on a public road. As an aside, I had reason to visit the Police Station near Petchbuncha Stadium a few weeks ago. They had loads of those bike exhausts lined up on the floor outside, and were about to drive a caterpillar tracked backhoe over them. -
Foreign Tourist Swallows Traffic Ticket in Odd Pattaya Incident
phetphet replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
I have heard Thais use the term "Chocolate man" in English. I don't think it was meant to be racist in any way. Rather a lack of vocabulary in what is not their mother tongue... But I might be wrong. -
Foreign Tourist Swallows Traffic Ticket in Odd Pattaya Incident
phetphet replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
I wonder why such people think they can just laugh at the Thai Police in this way. I know how they are viewed, but doing things like this in their face is just asking for trouble. They could make things quite uncomfortable at the least for this guy if they so chose to. -
I still subscribe to some, but have cut back as much as I can. Still another couple that I am planning to get rid of as I think I can either do without, or find a free, or paid for version of something similar. A case in point is 1Password, a password manager. I paid for it, then it got some big investors and took on lots of staff. started being subscription. So I found another password manager (Enpass) that is just as good, that offered a one time payment, lifetime version.

Has anyone else noticed that black mould, a part of living in such a humid, tropical environment, seems particularly bad this year? I always seem to get an outbreak in the bathroom during the wet season, but this year it has also started sprouting up on several bedroom ceilings. Even though I use the air con. I have been using diluted Hydrogen Peroxide in a spray to clean all walls and ceilings, but does anyone have any other ideas on what I might use? Especially on the grouting in the shower. TIA

Teenager’s Mercedes Crashes onto Six-Wheeler in Miraculous Escape
phetphet replied to Georgealbert's topic in Bangkok News
Below copy and paste from Wikipedia. I have applied "Bold" to the relevant part. Why have the police not made an arrest? I know. I know. A stupid question. Driving licence in Thailand is a document that allows the holder to drive on any roads in the Kingdom of Thailand.[1] The minimum age to drive a motor vehicle is 18, and to drive a motorcycle is 15. Driving licence is issued and administered by the Department of Land Transport, Ministry of Transport and its branches, land transport offices across Thailand. -
Indian passengers turn Thai AirAsia plane into party zone - video
phetphet replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I'm surprised the Captain didn't turn the plane around due to the safety aspect. A large number of passengers were badly injured, even paralysed on a flight recently over Myanmar when it hit an air pocket. imagine if the particular flight had also hit one. Who would get the blame for all the casualties? The airline. -
Just got a nasty shock today. Received an email from my provider (ACS). My Medical Insurance for 2025-2026 has gone up drastically. From $4814 last year to $5525. Halfway to my 67th birthday, I'm not sure what to do as it renews on 1st Jan. With such a short ime to go, I think I will have to bite the bullet and pay it. At least that will give me plenty of time to research other providers to see if I can find a better deal. The following are the reasons they give. In a very tense economic context, marked by high medical inflation worldwide, and even more so in South-East Asia, where some of the main hospitals are charging increasingly high rates, our insurer Allianz has informed us that our portfolio is very much in deficit, and has unfortunately forced us to make a sharp adjustment to our health rates in order to ensure the continuity and quality of the cover offered to our policyholders. Your Health 2025 premium will be indexed at 14%, plus any increase linked to your change of age bracket. The rates applicable to any optional cover remain unchanged. Seems like the Thai hospitals are getting like the US ones. I wonder if some will eventually price themselves out of the market. Many providers already don't like to use certain hospitals.

Your visa service is correct in suggesting you keep trying different banks. even different branches of the same bank. It might help to try it in an area where there are a lot of foreigners, as the staff get more used to doing it. Sorry, but I cannot help re a visa agent or someone like that to help you open an account. Maybe ask a lawyer? it might cost though. You obviously wiil need some paperwork, including copies of passport and proof of address. I used a Certificate of Residence obtained from Imiigration.

My plan is to try and cut back on some day to day spending, bring in a large chunk of cash each time I return to home country, and use that to reduce what goes through bank account. Also try and pay any large bills with my home country credit card or the cash brought in. Maybe gift GF some money to pay daughters's annual school fees and extra curricular lessons she has.

NACC Launches Probe into Thaksin’s Alleged Hospital Fake-out

It all seems a bit too late and pointless anyway. Hasn't he already been given a pardon from on high? Leave him be to play with his grandchildren. -
Srinagarind Hospital overwhelmed by 830% rise in cancer patients
phetphet replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
The cancer cases must already have been there. The program has just brought them to the fore. I wonder what the main causes are here in Thailand. Smoking? Excessive use of chemicals in farming? Pollution? Additives in food? Deep frying everything? -
Mysterious objects from sky leave Thai couple on cloud nine
phetphet replied to snoop1130's topic in Southern Thailand News
If they are indeed meteorites, they will certainly feel refreshed if they are worth a few quid. Normally they are quite valuable. Maybe not so much if they are just turds from a high flying airliner. -
Get one of these from Lazada: https://www.ecoflow.com/us/delta-2-portable-power-station Should be enough to power an air fryer. I bought the smaller one, the River Pro in the 11/11 sales, due to constant brown outs. Got it for running a few fans. 765W, but my fans are rated 46W. Already have emergency lights. Typical. The minute I bought it, we haven't had any power cuts or brown outs. Even with all the recent bad weather. But it's charged up and ready. I even bought a solar panel to charge it once the Sun comes out. 🙂
