We might all be guilty of breaking some road rules, but Thais are in a different class. You only have to look at the history and number of accidents here. People smashing into parked vehicles at high speed, smashing into vehicles stopped at traffic lights, driving on the wrong side of the road. They seem to have a total lack of spatial awareness.

With the numbers of them driving in the dark without lights, I presume they have far better night vision.

Taxi is easier if travelling with heavy luggage, and tired after a long journey. Just sit back and relax. But I suppose it depends on the route taken by the taxi driver and the traffic. 17:30 is rush hour. If they come in on the Expressway and exit by Asok or Ploenchit, you could get stuck in heavy traffic for a while. Train will require a couple of changes on BTS I think and you still might have to get a taxi at the other end. Personally, I would take this train option: Train to Makkasan, change to MRT to Silom, exit and take a taxi from there.

I had two retinal tears diagnosed while having a check up at Rutnin. The doctor took me upstairs immediately and repaired them both with laser. After treatment, I left the hospital, and even managed to catch my flight back to Samui. No exercise or anything strenuous for a month, then back for a check up. Next check up in June. I think everything, eye test, check up and laser treatment came to about 15,000THB. Might be cheaper than flying back to Moorfields. After all, Rutnin is an eye hospital as well.

If you have told Barclays that you no longer live in the UK, or that you no longer have a UK address, that is where your problem started. if you have family or a trusted friend that will allow you to use their address, you may be able to open a new account with another bank. Although it depends on what proof of address documents they ask for. Another alternative might be (if you do have a UK address that you can use), is to just go into your local bank branch and change your current registered address to that one. Take ID and they might not ask for proof of address that way. Just a suggestion.

I remember a demonstration at college of how dangerous petrol vapour could be, where they had a long box about 6 feet long x 6 inches high and 6 inches wide. At one end there was a small candle burning. The instructor put a teaspoonful of petrol in the opposite end and told us to wait a little while. All of a sudden there was a whoosh and the flame shot along and up out of the box. The vapour is virtually invisible and creeps along the floor.

Any money earned outside Thailand will be subject to tax if brought into Thailand in the same tax year as earned. So if you could afford to keep it outside Thailand until the next tax year, it would not be subject to tax.

It is possible to open a resident bank account while being non resident. I had a friend do it recently based on a retirement visa. Of course, you will have to be here physically to do it, and meet the requirements for said visa. including being over 50 y.o. I would be more worried about taking the money out of the country again. As others have said, better investments elsewhere. Worth noting Thai banks deposit protection levels too.

Them refusing to do it for you must be a local thing. As I said earlier, they sent a technician to my house who did all the set up for me. In fact when I call them a few weeks ago with a problem, the tech actually said to me, "You have your router set to bridge mode." When I originally tried to do it myself, I couldn't because I didn't have the necessary login details. That's why I called them, and why they sent a tech to do it for me. Next time you call a tech out for a problem, it might be worth asking if he could do it for you 'privately' as it were.
