  1. So far so good dealing with restaurants but what about other direct suppliers. I am thinking about airlines that advertise their flights at very attractive prices but don't mention the costs of the add on bits until you try making a booking.
  2. Sunlight is essential for a solar panel to produce electricity but there is an element of sunlight which is quite destructive to pretty well all substances. UV radiation. This UV light will slowly degrade a solar panel reducing it's efficiency unless it is filtered out. Trouble with that is it also reduces efficiency of "normal" light photons. The question about cloudy days extending the life of panels well that is perhaps true but that really defeats the object of what a solar panel is all about. Modern panels should last something like 25 - 30 years in daily use with plenty of bright sunshine. What is meant by that is the efficiency will deteriorate such that the panels output has reduced to 80% of it's designed maximum. It still works just fine but the loads it will drive will have to be smaller.
  3. Rule number 1. All employees must be able to speak Thai
  4. I have just fitted a coulomb meter to mine mainly because the charge controllers will only tell the total current flow which is, of course, very different from the battery charge current. It's dead simple to set up if you use the auto feature. I you feel the need to fit one to your bit of kit then don't forget the inline fuse. The batteries pack a whole world of power and if anything should go wrong in the meter (made in China) your installation could easily go up in smoke. https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/4nkAAOSwyJ1k5xLG/s-l1200.jpg
  5. Yeah. It's quite a recent thing like in the past month or so. As you can imagine, it's kicking up quite a storm at the moment. The banks now take it upon themselves to brand their elderly customers as non-cognizant in financial affairs.
  6. For anyone who annually brings "top up" funds into Thailand from the UK you should make sure the UK bank is aware of your actions. If you are regarded as elderly (over 70) in the UK you fall under the banks spotlight for "protection" and you could find your transaction frozen due to it being an unexpected transaction and therefore a suspect scam. It may not be a problem for expats but I will be contacting my UK bank for reassurance.
  7. Marmite is tasty and made with yeast extract and way too much salt. It contains very useful amounts of B vitamins. Prices for the stuff went up in the UK a few years back so there are plenty of other, less costly ways to get your B vitamins.
  8. I would guess you're now poking around with your trusty IR camera to see where the knock on effect is. I honestly can't make up my mind why my cables are slightly warmer than my hand. I'm beginning to suspect the heat may be conducted from the charge controllers which are convection cooled. and get toastily ouch when at max.
  9. So the charge current has increased since the original installation? I think that's an upcoming job for my system too even though my cables are only about 300mm or so long. Between them my new panels are bumping out slightly more than 60A now What will you be using as the replacement heating for the area around the charging cables?........
  10. Get your measuring stick out Mr. Crossy. We got rain of biblical proportions today.
  11. Do you think we will at last be entering the rainy season? My paddies are looking very deserty at the moment.
  12. Is this barspeak regarding incarceration? or are we thinking bodily functions of some sort.
  13. Well no it's not really infinitesimal when one takes the trouble to work out how many expats there are with a requirement to keep money in a bank. Let's say there are 200,000 expats in the country with a mixture of 400k and 800k in the bank for immigration requirements. I'm going to call that an average of 600k for the sake of convenience. So we are looking at 600k x 200,000 = 120,000,000,000 Baht. I would be a very happy bank manager if some of that was in my bank for an extra month or so. By the way I am never the sort of person to hold myself in high esteem for any reason.
  14. Aside from immigration issues, it is in the banks interest to keep your money for as long as possible. Reason for this is to swell their coffers for the sake of profits and shareholders. With regard to immigration. Many years ago I had a run in with BB in Buriram when they refused to supply the required letter. I reported the problem to the lady immigration police officer who sent my wife and I back to the bank. She gave my wife her 'phone number and said to call her when we were in the bank. We made the call and passed the 'phone to the bank manager who was promptly taken down a peg or two and quickly supplied the required letter. I have had a trouble free Krungsri account ever since.
  15. Reading this OP, it's easy for me to understand why I am not living in Bangkok.
  16. I cannot believe that there is a lack of educated people on this forum. Ill informed, yes and sometimes a little too well lubricated with a yawning gap between brain an mouth. I have had quite a few conversations with Thai teachers and the common thread seems to be a fear of the little darlings when they raise their hand and ask "why". Questions are not discouraged at all but teachers need to have their wits about them to give the correct answer. Thai teachers are good but they are up against the rural lazy and occasionally missing parents who lack parental skills to encourage their kids to move forward in life.
  17. That'll be because many in the Thai govt. received their education in Thai schools. It is only the ones from wealthier backgrounds who ever got a decent foreign education and they are the ones with the diplomas in pocketing the countries resources.
  18. So you are a cobbler and a plumber. A truly flexible skillset.
  19. Do you have a work permit?.........🙂
  20. My internet went down the other day too and that was without going into sleep mode. Modem showed connection was OK but no signal. Took it to the shop who confirmed everything was fine in the PC. Wife came home from shops and confirmed she had forgotten to pay the internet bill..........☹️
  21. That's a reasonable enough strategy. The ballast, which may be nothing more than a big iron cored coil will cause a voltage drop which is in direct proportion to the current drawn by the LED "tube" so the LED light may appear less bright or may not work atall. More modern fluorescent fittings may have an electronic ballast which could throw a spanner in the works. Here is a more detailed explanation of what you may find. Hope it helps.
  22. If my memory serves me well, which seem a bit doubtful these days, you have to bypass the ballast as well as remove the starter. Take a look at this............
  23. Yes I did but I couldn't resist the joke. It is interesting to note that an open field site would yield better results the higher the elevation the better. Ground wind resistance is quite remarkable and your flat, open roof is just that. Wind gets to the building, is diverted by it and it's velocity reduced. Perhaps if your fan was turned up to a faster speed.............
