Years ago. Showing off my Thai language skills to my visiting family in the airport restaurant I asked the waiter for the bill. He stood there looking puzzled. I asked him again. No reaction. My wife said, "What did you ask him?" When I told her, she said, "You asked him to fill your tank up." An old expat told me, "It's easy to speak enough Thai to get yourself into trouble. But can you speak enough to get you out of it?" That has been my poor excuse for not speaking it.π
