First question should be: If I am injured while working in Israel will the employer guarantee medical care and transport back to Thailand? Might want to get this in writing. Also, will I get continue to get paid if I am taken hostage? It is fine to take a job in many places but one should get some of guarantees in writing.

For those who are or have been to CNX know this hotel. This hotel is directly connected to the now closed Kad Suan Kaew Shopping center. Out of curiosity I booked a one night stay. The hotel has not aged well. I'm not sure if it even has a star rating anymore. In the past it was the place to be in CNX because guests could just walk across the lobby and eat or shop in KSK. Those days are long gone and KSK has been closed for over two years. Getting to the hotel means one has to walk or drive past KSK. KSK looks like a zombie zone. The exterior of the hotel is not pleasant. It just looks old and neglected. But the interior is still clean and most importantly the employees were great. The girls at the check in counter spoke very good English and check in took about two minutes. The room was old but everything worked fine. The swimming pool is large but could do with a renovation. The breakfast buffet was basic but good. A superior room was about $40 and the deluxe room about $60. To me this was not bad considering it is now the start of high season. I am surprised this hotel is still open. The common areas of the hotel was not crowded. At night the area surrounding the hotel was pitch dark and very quiet(this was a good thing). Would I go back? Maybe. But I had a pleasant stay becasue the people were friendly and tried theri best to ensure a good experience. I have been to some allegedly high end hotesl in CNX and in BKK that are modern but disappointing. The disappointment was usually a result of the poor performance the employees. Lotus employees were better than most of the employees I have encountered at other hotels.

S. Korean Police conduct similar type of road checkpoints. Sometimes I have seen a junior police officer actually waving a flag to hail speeding motorists to pull over on the interstate. Actually conducting vehicle patrol operations and conducting traffic stops seems to be rare thing in Asia. For me this is odd because I am retired a American police officer and the only time we conducted checkpoints were the occassional DUI enforcement checkpoints. These were conducted only at night and usually on the weekends or major holidays.

I have met some young foreigners who come to the Land of Smiles and believe laws and rules do not matter. I asked them why they believe this and their replies have been a mix of corruption, reputation of Thailand being a party place or "i can just pay and get out of it". Some of it may be true but some face serious consequences and this guy should face jail time.

US Citizen living in Thailand needs insurance for trip to the US
sqwakvfr replied to garet's topic in Health and Medicine
I go back to CA two to three times a year. I have bought AXA Thailand travel insurance for years. It is not much but better than nothing. Never filed a claim so do not know how effective they are. I also have Thai Health Insurance policy that does provide IPD (Inpatient) coverage while I am in the US. -
The Next President Inherits a Remarkable Economy
sqwakvfr replied to Mazungu's topic in Political Soapbox
There are many exmples of this kind of debt. I am old and outdated because I was taught to take out manageable debt, make timely payments and pay it off. I thought being responsible was an adult thing. It appears I am wrong. I went to a public university because I was not born rich and got a practical degree(Business Adminstrtion) because it took the least amount of credits and gave me a good chance of getting a job after graduation. Did not have time to dream or be idealistic while I went to college. -

Tax cut wounld only apply if one actually had income that was reported. How is that transfering debt? -

sqwakvfr replied to Mazungu's topic in Political Soapbox
Instead of "forgive" it is a transfer of the debt. Not all former students (not all graduate with a degree) will learn the debt lesson. Some will create other debt and who knows maybe in the Harris/Walz administration credit card debt might be the next debt to be forgiven. Because this will also help the economy as well? -

Economy is dynmaic. It does not take much for it go in the opposite direction. For instance the interest payment on the 35+ Trillion debt is at 1 Trillion per year. The US GDP for 2023 is less than the total debt(GDP was slightly over 27 Trillion). I'm not sure how long "kick the can down the road" will be sustainable. -

I do not support Trump. I do not support Biden or Harris. Does this make me "not a dcecent American?". At times like this I heard a saying "the lessor of two evils". Also, it could depend on the defintion of evil for the individual voter.

Facial Recognition to Replace Boarding Passes at Six Thai Airports
sqwakvfr replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
But TIT. Sometimes things just do not work well in the Land of Smiles. -
Booked a ride to Central Festival mall last week and the fare was quoted as 103 Baht. After I completed the ride my card was charged the 103 baht and then a second charge of 62 Baht was made and this was classified as "Other". I messaged the driver and he said it was a system error and I would be refunded. I emailed Grab's alleged customer service and I got an automated reply that the isssue is being reviewed. So far "radio silence" from Grab. Anyone get the additional "other charge" after completing a Grab ride?

Hua Hin Hotel Manager Fired After Dispute Over Customer Review
sqwakvfr replied to webfact's topic in Hua Hin and Cha-Am News
I have stayed at Marriot and Shangri La in CNX (both looked like a 5 star from the outside) but the experiences were disappointing. Marriot did not provide a tootbrush (6500 Baht for one night) but Shang Ri La did (6500 Baht for one night). Both properties were impressive in terms of rooms, swimming pools and gym but the employees were lacking. -
Hua Hin Hotel Manager Fired After Dispute Over Customer Review
sqwakvfr replied to webfact's topic in Hua Hin and Cha-Am News
I would agree witht the reviewer on this. I have stayed at 5 star, 4 star and many 3 star hotels in the Land of Smiles and the defintion of "service" is a fluid term. If one pays 5 Star prices this would mean "the guest should not have to ask any thing". I have seen eco friendly and disposable toothrushes that are not made of plastic. So "save the enviornemnt" does not ring true to me. In my experience I hated dealing with native hotel managers in LOS but all the foreign managers were receptive and friendly when I spoke to them about anything. -
California doctor claims spicy Thai dish left her with chemical burns
sqwakvfr replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
This could be challenging to prevail in court as far as I know no quantifiable standard where "spicy food is not safe to consume". My guess is any defense attorney can find others who consumed the same dish without being injured. Also, is this "injury" now delibitating or permanent? -

This could set a precedent for "hot" coffee sales? Not too hot or you could get sued for a spill caused by the consumer? I'm surprised SBUX has not been sued like this because back in the US their coffee has been really hot. -

sqwakvfr replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I'm not surprised. America is the land of lawsuits. Remember the McD hot coffee lawsuit. Also, remember the DC Judge who sued a dry clearner for over a million because his clothing was ruined. The restaurant will have to hire a lawyer to defend or negotiate a settlement. That is unless suit is dismissed. The biggest common denominator is: Lawyers. Amereica has way too many lawyers chasing $$$.- 127 replies

Thailand to Implement 300-Baht Tourism Tax Starting with Air Travel
sqwakvfr replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
So how long would it take to the get the ETA-Thailand approved? ETA-Korea took 10 minutes the last time I went to S. Korea. The cost was 10,000 KRW($7.25 based upon todays exchange rate). As usual no clear and definite answer. TIT. For those who entered during Covid times the then Thaialnd Pass time frame was uncertain. Can this country handles millions of ETA applications at any given time? -
ETA December 2024, June 2025
sqwakvfr replied to glegolo18's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
The real reason for the ETA? Payment would be similar to South Korea's K-ETA registration system, which requires foreign travellers to register and make an online payment before entering the country. Once the government approves this project, the ministry will start a procurement process to recruit software developers and insurance companies to offer insurance policies for foreign tourists, he said. The insurance premium for tourists is capped at no more than 60 baht per person, out of 300 baht collected. For S.Korea it was about $9 and it took about 10 minutes. S. Korea does not need to recruit softward developers because their I.T. systems are world class. -
