  1. I had an interest in a bar on Patpong 2 for many years along with friends from Taiwan, and a Thai 'partner'. We never got near to making a profit after all expenses, including those which were unrecorded, were paid. However we were only in it for fun so it was not a problem for us. The experience has lead me to believe making money in this kind of business in Thailand is not easy, to put it mildly.
  2. Been mugged twice in my life, once in metro Manila and once in Blackheath, south London.
  3. Well said. With stray dogs simply stay calm, don't shout and scream, and don't run away. They'll quickly move on.
  4. Nothing unusual about this break-in. Best not to keep valuables or a large amount of money in the house, and always remember a safe acts as a magnet to thieves.
  5. The law in Singapore is clear, however this man's guilt was not proven beyond doubt. I am saddened and amazed that the Singapore authorities went ahead with an execution in this case. RIP.
  6. The problem with the death penalty is, of course, that sometimes those who are not guilty are executed. Over 30 such cases in the USA in the last century.
  7. Friendly people, warm weather, good food, good healthcare, good infrastructure, beautiful beaches, beautiful mountains, good hotels, good restaurants, reasonable living costs.
  8. This is not surprising. Elephants suffer a lot of cruelty in Buddhist Thailand.
  9. The behaviour of Brits arriving in Thailand is markedly worse than it was in the 1970/80s.
  10. Most of the politicians invloved in these scams escaped any form of punishment. Many are standing in the forthcoming election.
  11. Ever since flights became cheaper in the late 1990's the behaviour of Brits visiting Thailand has become noticeably worse.
  12. As a Brit I too am very grateful to have been able to live happily in Thailand for many years. The UK is, sadly, no longer the country I once knew and loved.
  13. Whether it is the least equitable country in the world or not, Thailand certainly has a long way to go to reduce the wealth gap.
  14. Not strange. People tend to wear masks more indoors than outdoors. Theory is that germs spread more easily in confined spaces.
  15. Those most strongly opposed to the easing of restrictions on cannabis use are the Thai producers/importers of alcohol and cigarettes who care very little about the social fabric and Thai core values. Your comments are, to put it mildly, naive.
  16. Not only the foreign vote. Many, many Thais now have an interest, one way or another, in the cannabis business.
  17. The indictment has been made under seal. To quote your words, how is it you know what 'the charges are to do with' ?
  18. It will be interesting to see how things pan out from here. Surely going to be difficult for Trump to get nominated by the GOP now, but he's the kind of guy who can never be ruled out.
  19. 50 years ago there were quite a few naked Thai and foreign women on certain beaches. All stopped as the prudes and killjoys gradually took over, not only in Thailand, but in most western countries as well.
  20. If you mean cannabis it encourages peace and quiet as opposed to alcohol which encourages aggression and noise.
  21. 40 years with my Thai partner, married for 33 of those years. I'm now 81, she's 66. Still very happy and active together and, most importantly, we are, and always have been, very good friends.
