  1. If travelling reasonably light and solo, I've now taken to using the train more often simply to avoid taxi hassles from Suvarnabhumi. With road tolls and airport charge the fee is nearly 500 Baht vs 70 Baht by two trains these days anyhow.
  2. I did that last year after meter refusal, thinking I was being smart. Taxi driver got out and chased me down Sukhumvit. Thankfully it was mostly for show and he gave up quickly. I won't do it again.
  3. I agree with that mostly. The problem is that you never know if you're going to get a bozo taxi driver who does not know the most efficient (traffic free) route or doesn't use Google maps. It's for this reason, that where possible, I try to use Grab so they have a map although that occasionally fails as Grab maps are different to the more reliable Google maps with traffic. I frequently have to instruct drivers on the route before they make an exit into traffic mayhem. For the OP, I'd say it's a close call timewise taxi vs train at that time/day to that destination.
  4. Easy cheap shot regurgitated frequently over the last 30+ years. Talk to any Burmese on the street or running a small business, and ask them if they would rather that foreigners don't come, and they'll tell you they want more visitors. You don't know how much support we give to ordinary Burmese people on our visits. 100% of the money from those paying fees to immigration to do a "border bounce" is going to government or it's employees.
  5. The black car at night car could have been difficult to see. The red light should have been obvious. So what was the rider thinking? Just blast through a red light or was he totally oblivious to any of his surroundings? No mention of whether or not he was wearing a helmet. Suspect not.
  6. Jeez, that's one hell of a stopping distance! Tragic outcome for all involved. Both types of vehicle can be a menace on Thai roads. Dangerous U-turns too, make it all a recipe for disaster. RIP.
  7. From The Sun article: “Glitter is suspected of trying to access prohibited material online. It is thought those attempts were unsuccessful, but that in itself is enough to reach the recall threshold. “However, his phone will now be forensically analysed to determine exactly what he might have been searching for.” The Probation Service confirmed Glitter’s recall, saying: “Protecting the public is our priority. “That’s why we set tough licence conditions and when offenders breach them, we don’t hesitate to return them to custody.” Being returned to jail simply under suspicion? Pretty strong stuff. If only they would control other suspects in the same way.
  8. No chance. Land borders with Myanmar are not open to foreigners. Only for locals on border passes. For us foreigners, the only method of entry to Myanmar is by air and then only to Yangon and Mandalay airports. The visa application process is tedious - see here - and costs $50USD + insurance costing $50USD too. See here and be sure to read the section in red regarding land border restrictions. We just got back this evening from 5 days in Yangon. We had a great time and it was so nice to be back there enjoying meeting the people, delicious food, sightseeing and shopping. While there, we saw fewer than 100 westerners.
  9. If she has Thai citizenship and Thai ID card there is no reason that she couldn't work. Regardless of which passport she entered the country on. And anyway, how many millions of Thais don't have any kind of passport. How would any employer even know? And why would they care? She is a Thai citizen.
  10. Converting the tourist visa into Thai residency. Don't beleive it is anything to do with ministry of foreign affairs either. Passport of entry will be irrevelent to obtaining Thai ID card. Here is what we did for our son. Entered Thailand, went to Amphur office (with an entourage of village head and householder). Need Thai birth certificate. Got son added to blue house book. With that, he was able to get Thai ID card. With blue book and Thai ID card can get Thai passport. Would suggest once having Thai passport, go to local immigration office and ask them how to close out the entry on the tourist visa. Would expect that they have a mechanism for that. Maybe others here can advise further?
  11. Sad for yet another loss of life. 19 and everything a head of him. RIP. Factors involved in causing this fatal scene? Speeding vehicles, no helmets, alcohol and heavily tinted windows? Whatever the cause, riding a motorcycle at night is a recipe for disaster as just too many things can go wrong.
  12. My uncle came to visit last October and his dodgy knees meant walking any distance was out of the question. I brought a wheelchair with us from the UK and it made the trip. In Bangkok all the BTS stations we used had lifts, the staff were exceptionally helpful too. Getting on and off the boat to/from Ko Samet, the boat boys were really kind in assisting him (he can stand and walk only short distances). In and out of the hired vans, the drivers always assisted and got his walking sticks ready and then unloaded the wheelchair. It meant that he got to enjoy life and travel with us. Now back in the UK he's got a small mobility scooter of his own.
  13. Until last year, I owned a wheelchair rental business in London. Occasionally, at the end of hire, the hirer would tell us that mum, dad, sister, brother, auntie, uncle or whoever they had hired the chair for "refused to use it". This meant that they all were unable to enjoy trips out or events due to the perceived stigma of using a wheelchair by the one in need. Virtually all other clients commented that it made their trip and they wouldn't have enjoyed without it.
  14. Afternoon? In many UK towns, the mobility scooters are parked outside Wetherspoons by 9am!
  15. I was walking the beach most mornings during first Covid lockdown March/April 2020. That area was truly horrible and it was obvious raw sewerage. Glad to see they've finally solved the problem. Hopefully the pumps in the "lift station" have the capacity required for the heaviest rains.
  16. ....whilst China builds man made islands in the South China sea and does as it pleases over neighbouring territory. Just take a look at the "nine dash line" to see how much of the area China considers it's territory.
  17. Unfortunately, you have no claim or rights to anything under these circumstances. It's not your property.
  18. Handing out face masks in Chiang Mai? Why? Thais already have, and enjoy wearing, their useless face masks 24/7, even when solo in a vehicle or riding a motorcycle.
  19. From the full story; "his visa status was not immediately made known". F.F.S! Even in death some are fixated on visa status!!! I hope he died happy. Passing away on a tropical beach after a sunset beer vs dieing alone in a bleak apartment room would be my preferred way when time's up. RIP fella.
  20. No mention of how much the subsidy per household is from what I can see. Just got my MEA bill yesterday for 156kwh (units). Paid it today. Now looking at it in detail it seems that there was a discount of 104.58 Baht. Still so much cheaper than my UK electric bill when in London.
  21. And to seal the deal, a party assistant will be along soon with some purple notes to ensure their voting choice...
  22. I'd accept 1mm as a maximum. Sure they have straight edges to check their work. Glad to hear the contractor accepted it as wrong. Ps. wrote this before reading further above. I agree with @Elkski
  23. So glad that you haven't posted a picture of it. After the happy ending this is the unhappy ending part two!
  24. No you didn't. The house in only "sold" once all the parties have received or paid the funds, and the title has been transferred. Please report back then.
