I was born in Libya, spent some amazing safari holidays in Kenya and Tanzania, have yet to go to South Africa but it's on my list. If money was no object then I see no reason not to go check out places I've not been.

@BritManToo Sorry to hear about the accident, hope you heal well and it doesn't take too long to recover. -
Are you sure that's not the bit of Sukhumvit that extends to the UK 😉

Spending Money - Should I follow my Friends Advice ?
Freddy42OZ replied to AlienBoy's topic in General Topics
If the OP has paid off his home then 25K a month living frugally for two people could well be 10k on food (for two people) and 15K on insurance (180,000 baht a year for insurance). My basic food bill is only 140 THB a day and I live in Bangkok. I would think in that in the boonies it would be less. Granted a wife would mean 2 people to feed, but a Thai wife would probably mean more variety and more savings. I don't eat rice for example, if I did my food bill would be much lower. -
If Thailand refused you, where would you live? And why?
Freddy42OZ replied to sidjameson's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I've lived in Asia for 50 years. I'd love to live in an English proper speaking country. Although I'm a Brit aside from 7 years of boarding school I've never lived there (and boarding school really doesn't count as back then we were barely let out!) So if money was no object, I'd probably choose somewhere in the UK. My Russian GF studied in Dublin and she'd like to live in Ireland or England (she has family in London) so I'm trying to figure out if sometime in the next 4-5 years we might be able to do that. I just want to be somewhere that we don't have language issues, where I feel that living there is more secure (no visa issues), where I can own and operate businesses without all the stupid restrictions we have here, where I can buy and own land/property and know that it can be passed down to my family. I love living in Bangkok but having been a foreigner all my life (so far) is wearing real thin. -
Stranded British man seeks help as wife takes passport and sails away
Freddy42OZ replied to snoop1130's topic in Phuket News
Despite the typically vague reporting I believe this is a couple from the UK who've had a row while on holiday. Sounds like she grabbed her bag and left, probably not realising both their passports were in "her" bag. Reporting her for theft doesn't sound like the best way to deal with a marital spat, unless he wants to escalate things to the point of divorce. -
Where to find a sugar friendship?
Freddy42OZ replied to whistersniff's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
The barrier is where to meet them. Or are you the sort of person who would walk up to someone in a shop or on the street and try talking to someone you don't know? -

If you've lived here any length of time and speak Thai you'd know that these girls are called Side Line Girls. Go to the Thai Side Line Groups and forums. They are all in Thai but you can use Google Translate. -
Thailand might have people who want to put laws in place to stop this, but the poor are a very large voting population and will not vote for a Government that tells them they can't have one vehicle for hauling good and their large families. Try telling a poor Thai that if he wants to take 12 people somewhere they need 3 cars with seatbelts and the cars need new tires every 4 years. Never going to happen.

What's stopping you from dressing well? Other than it sounds like you have based yourself where people are being slobs. I was just in EmQuartier and Emporium and pretty much everyone was dressed smartly. Just go to places that have higher quality patrons.

Is It Better to be 17 or 70....in 2023?
Freddy42OZ replied to GammaGlobulin's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
As long as you still act like you are young. When I see old people who have given up on trying to look good, have lost their dynamism, no longer want to keep current with technology etc those are the ones I want to have nothing to do with (to the extreme of not even wanting to acknowledge they exist, so I'd rather not have to even see them). On my death bed I hope I'm still interested in the specs of the latest VR headsets and new Augmented Reality Glasses (for example) and reading about new tech even though I won't get to see it. -
what you do with your house when you are away in thailand?
Freddy42OZ replied to parafareno's topic in General Topics
We are currently selling a house in the UK. It's a reasonably large 4000 sq/ft Georgian mansion. The house is now empty and our insurer has told us to leave the central heating on a low setting. -

I can listen to all of that too, except Isaan music. I also like reggae, and heavy metal (Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, etc) Club music is about the people you are with, the hot girls, good drugs. I wouldn't put House music on to sit and relax at home. But if I'm in a club and there are some banging tunes and there are hot white girls to dance with for a few hours then I'm in heaven! -
Is It Better to be 17 or 70....in 2023?
Freddy42OZ replied to GammaGlobulin's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Haha maybe I was remembering the times these old timers have posted links to music and movies from the 50's and claimed them to be 'better'. Or just the general attitude so many older people have that the old days were better. I recently saw a question on Facebook asking "What did the youth of the 80's have that the youth now don't have?" It has more than 14,000 answers, all stupid comments that you'd expect from people who think the past was better. I had an amazing childhood in the 80's and grew up with loads of privilege, but technology and everything else is way better now. The only thing that isn't better now is that I'm in my 50's not in my teens, 20s or 30s and I don't have the same fortune and privilege as I had when I was living off my parents. -

Based on my observations of old guys in Thailand, they weren't exactly very smart to start with. They just get fatter, grumpier and fixated on how "it was better in the 50s" They also seem to lose the ability to dress well or keep themselves looking well groomed. -

Are you sure you're not 70? Lots of old music is great, but EDM, Techno, House and Trance are awesome! -

I would LOVE to actually be 17 in 2023. Instead I only feel like I'm still 17 (I can still wear the same sized clothes and can probably skateboard, snowboard, BMX, etc about as well as when I was 17). What I can't do anymore is walk into a nightclub and pick up hot young white women. I'm basically invisible to most white woman under 45 (aside from my very hot 38 year old white GF ???? so not being able to pickup younger white women isn't actually an issue, although it definitely would be be if I was single).
