Assault on Kiev: Russian helicopters swoop above Ukraine's capital
Bkk Brian replied to Chris.B's topic in The War in Ukraine
W.P. Up to 4,000 Russian soldiers may have died in Ukraine, U.S. general says Lt. Gen. Scott D. Berrier, director the Defense Intelligence Agency, told House lawmakers that the best estimate is between 2,000 and 4,000 Russian fatalities. But he said he had low confidence in that figure, citing “some intelligence sources, but also open source” information. The general’s reference to open source information probably refers to assessments made public by credible outside groups monitoring the conflict. By comparison, the entire 20-year U.S. war in Afghanistan resulted in 2,461 American fatalities, according to Pentagon figures. Source This is the first war in human history when the #Russian army refuses to take its #dead back, says the #Ukrainian Interior Ministry. Source Russian losses- 902 vehicles, including 143 tanks and 272 A/IFVs Ukrainian losses- 272 vehicles, including 46 tanks and 89 A/IFVs This isn’t a complete list but serves as an accurate, independent baseline. -

BBC with hit shot videos in article Ukraine's military has released several videos showing Russian helicopters being shot down by surface-to-air missiles. One, from last week, shows a Russian helicopter flying low, just above the tree line - in the hope of avoiding what's about to happen next. Tracking its path is the smoking trail of a surface-to-air missile. In a matter of seconds the missile has found its target. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-60655349 -

Putin would need to have a bigger table made first, at least 50 meters long with him at one end and the EU leaders cramped at the other with loud hailers -

Good but neither side is ready to stop fighting so tell Putin to stop shelling residential areas and killing at least 2,000 civilians so far. While your at it tell him those humanitarian corridors should be open for more than an hour before he begins shelling them again even while civilians are trying to cross the bridge. There's the easiest way to stop war crimes and the slaughter of women and children. -

Worth a read, from the former deputy minister of finance of Russia on the 3rd March Can Russia rely on China to provide financial resources to help prop its economy? The Russian leadership had such hopes in 2014-2016 when it was hit by Western sanctions over the annexation of Crimea. But despite numerous requests for loans from the Russian side, Beijing gave only a minimal amount of assistance and tied it to Chinese companies being allowed to access Russian production and exports. https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2022/3/3/how-much-damage-will-sanctions-do-to-russia -

You support this? Thailand voted in support of a UN resolution against Russia’s invasion, demanding that Russia “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces” from Ukraine. “Thailand is gravely concerned with the worsening hostilities and violence as a result of the use of military forces in Ukraine, which has led to the loss of life, including of innocent civilians and destruction of property and civilian infrastructure.” Bravo, so do I. -

Russia can't even stick to cease fire arrangements, 3 of them broken already within an hour and so Russia carry on their shelling including residential areas killing innocent civilians and children trying to get out of harms way after leaving their homes to try and find safety. -

I'd say one of the mounting worries in this invasion are the nuclear power plants in Ukraine, Putin's after them to control the power output in Ukraine. He's now approaching a 3rd plant and there are far reaching risks with controlling these. "In its latest report on the situation in Ukraine on Sunday, the International Atomic Energy Agency said Ukraine’s regulator informed them that the plant’s management had been told that all actions, including measures related to the technical operation of the reactors, required prior approval by the Russian commander." The agency also reported that Russian forces at the site have switched off some mobile networks and the internet so staff can’t communicate reliable information to Ukrainian authorities. Ukraine’s regulator told the IAEA that phone lines, as well as e-mails and fax, were no longer functioning and that mobile phone communication, while possible, now had poor quality. https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/russia-ukraine-latest-news-2022-03-04/card/u-n-atomic-agency-says-staff-at-ukraine-s-largest-nuclear-plant-under-russian-forces-control-WGXOBs34EHMvpotAGSuF -

Despicable manipulation from Putin and his Russian forces, having already broke two cease fires for humanitarian corridors he is now setting conditions on where the refugees should go before another cease fire is implemented. As of two days ago at least 505,000 Ukrainians have gone to Poland, 139,000 to Hungary, 97,000 to Moldova, 51,000 to Romania, 72,000 to Slovakia, and 90,000 to other European countries. Nearly 48,000 have also gone to Russia and a few hundred have gone to Belarus. However announced just now new cease fire corridors will be mainly leading only to Russia : Ukraine anger as Putin offers evacuation routes to Russia UK government minister James Cleverly has called Russian plans for a temporary ceasefire - to allow civilians access to humanitarian corridors which lead to either Belarus or Russia - "cynical beyond belief". "Providing evacuation into the arms of the country that is currently destroying yours is a nonsense," the minister for Europe and North America told BBC Breakfast. https://www.bbc.com/news/live/world-europe-60635927 -

Not sure what point you are trying to prove, I'm against the war, so are you, now what? Is it not better to join together to denounce Russia's act of aggression and illegal invasion that is killing so many and causing widespread destruction? Trying to debate how long its going to last and bringing China into the equation as a possible partner that may help Russia economically in trade is not something that is on the radar of the pressing needs right now.
