New Tax Rules for Expats in Thailand Spark Concern
John Drake replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Don't forget the announced "adjustments" for the retirement visas due to come in September. God knows, these tax reporting regulations could be part of that, too. -
Sounds like a cakewalk. Glad that it went so easily for you. Now, you can use ID.ME for other services, such as IRS. BTW, I received a survey from ID.ME and they asked would I like ID.ME to be applied to other government services. And then the survey specifically mentioned the State Department (passports, etc.).

As I intermittently suggest on these forums: Prayuth was better. -

Mexico does that. They protect the interests of their citizens, which is why they have a rigorous voter ID system, restrictions on property ownership, and other measures. The fault isn't them. It's the American government which puts its own people last. And it doesn't matter who is going to be elected, Trump or Biden, they'll both put citizens behind benefits for refugees and neither will create a voter ID system or a citizenship test for public benefits. -
Yeah, I think having it all in Thai is going to be a problem. Can you get your address in English. When I first got here I used my Moobahn address and just had it translated into English. Things arrived steadily and without a problem--until they opened a substation and I stopped getting my mail (hence, the PO Box).

ID.ME will ask you to upload a picture from your passport, your social security card picture, and a third one from a list of items. I selected my yearly Social Security statement for the third one. Then, when you have the live interview, they ask you to position your face in phone camera and use the camera to show the two other documents you used. Don't worry. They will tell you ahead of time and while you're waiting in line for your online appointment (took me about 30 minutes) what you will need to have prepared for the online live session.

Just be assured you can use your Thai address for ID.ME. In fact, it accepted my Thai P.O. Box address. As I said, I use login.gov for my management applications at grants.gov. Those grant applications allow you to fill in 000 for US Zip codes, which then takes you to a separate entry for foreign addresses. This is what troubled me when I tried to use it for Social Security this morning. There was no way around the US address and telephone requirement.

Biden Admin to Announce Border Executive Action by Tuesday

The newly elected president of Mexico is Claudia Sheinbaum. She has a PhD in energy engineering from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. She has written two books and more than 100 articles on the topic of energy and sustainable development. She was also on a team that won a Nobel Prize. She has pledged to defend the interests of Mexicans across the border. Two things occur to me. First, whomever the US elects will be an intellectual dwarf compared to this woman. I expect her to outsmart them at every move. Second, I wish American presidents cared as much about their overseas citizens as she apparently does for her fellow Mexicans. See her info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudia_Sheinbaum -

I got the ID.me account about a year ago. It requires a submission and then you arrange an appointment online. Once in the appointment, you wait in line again until someone comes on live and in person. They double check your info and ask for live submission of photo and social security card and one other form of acceptable ID. Took about a week to get the online appointment.

Just tried the login at My Social Security and saw the transition announcement. I have both ID.me and a Login.gov account. FWIW I was able to use the ID.me and login directly to my account. But when I tried to use the Login.gov account I have, I was sent to a page asking for personal information. It required a US address and a US telephone number. There were no options for foreign addresses or telephones. ID.me allows for foreign addresses.

What Movies or TV shows are you watching (2024)
John Drake replied to Rimmer's topic in Entertainment
Watched House of Ninjas, which was very, very good. Now watching Dark Matter. It's basically Sliders with a Quantum Box. The first two eps are pretty glacial. But from ep 3 onwards it's quite entertaining. Last episode (I think) is available this week. -
Ought to be as big of a success as Scorpion King 3, which was shot in Thailand.
