  1. I don’t see how a pension company can pay a Credit card (they need Sortcode & account number) but even if they could, how do you maintain a UK Credit Card without a UK Bank Account? Better idea, set-up a Wise Account & get a UK Bank Account (NB I did this from Thailand but had proof of address in UK from Barclays & HMRC so I don’t know if it will work for you if you don’t but if you have a UK account / Credit card registered to a UK address it’s worth a try)

The material points are when the Income was earned & when it was sent to Thailand so if you have any (none state pension) income paid directly into a Thai Bank Account then it’s obviously been earned in that Tax Year & so liable to Thai Tax… Have it paid into a UK account & bring it over the next tax year & no Tax to pay. I understood the Tax Relief to be the other way around I.E. Tax payed in Thailand on income already taxed in the UK could be offset against future UK Tax, that’s how it worked when I had to pay Income Tax in Singapore & UK on my salary but to be honest I got a full refund of all PAYE paid as I was considered resident in Singapore for the whole year so different circumstances/DTA could mean I’m mistaken.

  6. All Income earned in the UK is subject to UK Tax after allowing for any allowances (e.g £12,500 Personal Tax Allowance, £1,000 for dividends, 100% of income from ISAs etc… are not taxed). Thailand is not interested in any of this unless you bring it into the country within the same Thai Tax year (1st Jan to 31st December) that it was earned so if you were to have any income (not State pension) paid directly into your Thai Bank account then this is liable to tax but any tax you pay can be re-claimed as a tax credit against future UK tax bills. At the other end of the spectrum if you just made 1 annual transfer to Thailand on 1st January you wouldn’t be liable for any tax in Thailand even if it was earned on 31st December.

  9. Yep, there’s a pop-up offering weekly subscriptions for 0.99 but closing this allows you to read the full article. If you do come across a paywall check out 12 Foot Ladder https://12ft.io gets you past most paywalls as it works by serving up the page from the same cache that search engines like Google trawl to build indexes for search results.
  10. I last entered Thailand via Nong Khai land border in Feb so completed a TM6, when I left via BKK last Monday I handed it to the IO with my passport & got handed it back as they were not interested in it. Not expecting to do a TM6 when I return on 31st May.
  11. https://www.barclays.co.uk/important-information/living-outside-the-uk/ I think you’ll be ok if you can use a UK Address but note the paragraph… “For your accounts to stay open, you and everyone you have an account with need to live in the UK, and all the addresses we have for you also need to be in the UK.” + you need a UK Mobile to register for the Movile App (I use GiffGaff) but have never had to use it besides this.
  12. Lol, I didn’t have much choice seeing as it was Barclays who moved me overseas (Singapore) 15 years ago. Still have my bank account, credit cards & Investment/ISA accounts with them but use a UK address for all of my correspondence.
  13. One thing to watch for when booking more than one night on Agoda is they will charge you all nights at the rate of the most expensive night. E.g you book a week in a hotel & 6 of the 7 nights are 1,000b with one night 2,000b, they’ll charge you 7x2,000b We always check each night & when necessary make multiple bookings (in the example above we would book the 6 nights at 1,000b & the 7th at 2,000b so 8,000b all in). On a similar note when booking flights always check the price for one person as if there’s only 1 cheap seat left you can book that & pay the higher price for the 2nd person, otherwise you’ll pay the higher price for both.

Am following the topic with interest but don’t have much to add except believe if your mother “Gifted” you & your siblings the property then 7 years needs to have passed before it wouldn’t be liable for Inheritance Tax. https://www.gov.uk/inheritance-tax/passing-on-home Do note that if your mother continues to live at the property then she should be paying rent at the prevailing rate… Giving away a home before you die There’s normally no Inheritance Tax to pay if you move out and live for another 7 years. If you want to continue living in your property after giving it away, you’ll need to: pay rent to the new owner at the going rate (for similar local rental properties) pay your share of the bills live there for at least 7 years Otherwise it counts as a ‘gift with reservation’ and will be added to the value of your estate when you die. (A gift with reservation is where you give something away but continue to benefit from it.) You do not have to pay rent to the new owners if both the following apply: you only give away part of your property the new owners also live at the property If you die within 7 years If you die within 7 years of giving away all or part of your property, your home will be treated as a gift and the 7 year rule applies.
  17. Did you use the Same Day service for your new passport? Only when I got my last one (Liverpool) they handed my old passport back to me with the new one. Am planning on doing the same next year but if I need to hang around in the UK for the old passport to be returned then I’ll get it done in Thailand instead.

Thanks, I understood the removal of “No fault evictions” meant I could only evict the tenants if they did something wrong so it’s reassuring to know that I can still ask them to leave if I want to sell Selling to another landlord is unlikely as the income yield is approx 2.5% (before expenses) given my tenants pay 25-30% below market rate as I’ve only raise the rent once in 6 years. As I mentioned, The house was bought for us to live in not as an investment & I do appreciate that these are peoples homes we’re talking about but the government is progressively making it harder to be a (single house) landlord & Im at the point where I’d rather use the cash to buy a decent condo in Thailand & stop being a renter here. In an ideal world the tenants would buy the house & everybody would be happy, am hoping this turns out to be the case & they’ll certainly be given 1st refusal to buy.

I rent out my (ex) home so consider myself as an accidental landlord but think I’m a decent landlord as any issues are dealt with immediately (Agent is pre-approved to carry out repairs up to £500) & I’ve only put the rent up once (last year) in the past 6 years. However these new regulations concern me as although I’d never move back into the house, I might want to sell it & have always understood that I could do that anytime with 2 months notice (though I’d never do it mid-contract). My tenants lease is up at the end of May & we’ve agreed another year (at the same rate) but after this news if it was due 2-3 months from now I’d probably be saying no & putting the place on the market (which I’ll do next Jan).

It does feel like they're looking to copy the Philippines model of locals/long term residents paying & leaving the tourists / Non-IMM's alone, so if it does get implemented lets hope that you can pay at the same time as you purchase your tickets. That wasn't the case when I used to travel to the Philippines (mainly SIA SIN-DVO) with my ex-GF but I haven't been (or booked a flight for her) since 2018 (wow 5 years has flown by!).
  21. Bit of a morbid question but who pays for the damage to the bike if an uninsured/unlicensed tourist is killed in an accident? Does the mandatory 3rd Party insurance cover it (In which case the government could look to changing it so it doesn't apply to rental bikes if the rider is not fully licensed/insured etc...) or does the rental company cover it (in which case you would think it would be in their best interest to ensure full license etc...)
  22. So if I book a flight for me & the GF, she has to pay the tax & I don't... How's that going to work when booking online & if for some reason the tax doesn't get paid who cops the penalty? Me (I'm a Non-Imm so not liable for the tax), her (But she's not making the booking or paying for it) or the online site (for failing to collect it). The only way it could work is if it was paid at the airport (as happens in Philippines), which just adds to the already far too long it takes people to get through Immigration. Another ill-thought out scheme that will never be implemented but tarnishes Thailand's tourism reputation anyway.

I just remember when I needed to move my account from Singapore to Thailand or UK I ended up moving it to the UK for some reason (Could have been that I have a lot more proof of address there as all my UK bank/credit card correspondence goes to my parents address). No problem using a Thai mobile number with Wise though as other's have recommended, you're much better off using the mobile app.
