And there's very often value in hearing other points of view. I like that aspect of open discussion here.

Lots of other things in life don't need to pay. Breathing is free but given time someone will find a way to try to turn breathing or walking into $. Sad...

But is your banking moving towards just one digital platform? - Right now many banks (globally): have a whole digital system devoted to operating what's usually been called 'Internet Banking' on a PC or a noteboook. And - Right now they have an app which works on a smartphone doing all the same functions, including International Funds Transfers but is supported by a second / separate digital system. Buying, managing, maintaining, upgrading 2 full systems costs big money, therefore many/most banks are working towards operating on one system, the App on your smartphone, which can do everything. One Thai bank call centre supvr told me her bank is aiming towards (and making progess) to: - One digital system - an App on smartphones and closing the basically duplicate system previously called Internet Banking on PCs and notebooks. - Banking by phone (note that call centre staff are nowadays much better / more comprehensively informed about all banking and can guide customers through any transacton, using their App). - Closing many branches because not needed, 99% of transactions can be done on the App and/or by telephone. - Closing a large % of their ATM machines: Cash now not needed so often, and the transaction previously done on ATM screens can now be done on the smartphone App.

I have no idea about the retirement visa or any other visa options for Vietnam. Always here on 30 day visa granted to visiting uni lecturers, always had about 5 to 7 days extra days after uni course finished. From my knowledge same visa (and other Visas) also available to other visitors. Never extended the visa but I understand it's possible, needs checking. Halong Bay is a very pleasant 'mixed bag'. Many visitors get there by using an overnight boat service from Hanoi. On arrival you can stay on a boat, bring your own or stay in one of many 2, 3, 4 star hotels. All with good rooms, service, clean etc. I'm not aware of any 5 star hotels, haven't checked.

Not one place: I very much enjoy, equally, being in: -Hanoi -Halong Bay -Ho Chi Minh City All have their own 'flavor' all have friendly helpful people, great food, not that difficult to find English speakers. Hanoi has it's old quarter (lots of old different culture / architecture / food) which is delightful, friendly and great food.

... and many many more foreigners (not necessarily grumpy or old) still here and living comfortably / happily with their Thai wife and kids. Some with Permanent Residence (me), others doing the necessary yearly visa renewal, not necessarily all that difficult. And in many countries the gaining of initial visa and the renewal much more complex / daunting compared to LOS.

PLus, after my one experience wih an Airbnb booking (not in LOS) I'll never use Airbnb again.

Of course, I've lived / worked in Thailand 35+ years and I've been a Permanent Resident of Thailand for over 27 years. I agree, getting all motorcycle riders and their pillion passengers to wear safety helmets is not a success story but that's because of a lack of will by the police / authorities on strict enforcement and punishment. That doesn't mean that dialogue and discussion should cease. It must continue and hopefully soon there will be more attention to these matters (but I'm not holding my breath).

OK, but if the gov't is serious they can and must find a way. If caught with an unlicensed gun 30 days mandatory jail might help, but of course that depends on 'who' is involved in the process. But there's always more than one way to skin a cat.

I add, In my original country the public like and want laws which prohibit guns being in the hands of the general public. Twice, over several decades, there's been 2 amnesties enourgaing the public to hand in handguns and rifles at designated local police stations and on the spot the weapon rendered unuseable forever. Both amnesties had strong support of the public with many weapons being handed in. Plus praise in the media / public arena for the gov't taking the amnesty policy and action.

The “October spirit” and Thailand’s slow democratic transition
scorecard replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
The military dominance even effects daily conversation in the public arena. Frowned upon for juniors in the society to respond to a comment etc., from a senior except for just YES or NO. I recall well the time I did in national service (not T'land) when junior soldiers were not allowed to give more than YES or NO answers to anybody who outranked them. -
Following the attitudes of Americans re gun control is the last thing Thailand needs. Americas attitudes to gun control puts the US at the top of the list with a massive gap to second position re deaths of children, mass shootings etc. There's plenty of good examples of gun control laws in many other countries which emphasise reducing and even outlawing guns in the hands of the public. And in these countries the number of deaths and mass shootings by members of the public are close to zero.

KBank International Transfers
scorecard replied to Digitalbanana's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
That's NOT my point. I mentioned that I called K BAnk and they said that 'has to be funds earned in Thailand has some flexibility, and regular money coming in from abroad in the way of state pensions would come under the 'flexibilty' available for 'funds earned in Thailand'. Work permits nothing to do wih it. I repeat, my comment was in regard to state pension money coming in regularly from aboard and K bank said YES that would be included in the flexibility available on this point. Nothing whatever was mentioned about Work permits. Sorry if I confused you. -
KBank International Transfers

A few months back i called K Bank and asked if there's any flexibility about '.... money earned in Thailand." The answer was yesseveral exceptions, so I asked what if it's my state pension money which comes from abroad every 4 weeks. K Bank lady said istantly 'that would entitle you to tick '... earned in Thailand'. I then completed an international transfer using the K Cyber screens, it went through smoothly, no further questions. -

I've done a number of international transfers using the K Bank Cyber (internet banking) facility and the K+ app. All successful. Seems to me requests re WP etc., details are specific to what the sender selects as the purpose of the international transfer.
