I won't wear a helmet, makes me look stupid
My take exactly.. Wherever I am, not just Thailand, when i get into a car, the belt goes on. (Here in UK, the police do enforce the law rigorously.) I REALLY don't like motorcycles and try to avoid them at all costs - my choice. And that's the crux of it... I CHOOSE to wear a belt in a car (front or back seat) and it's become second nature. BUT I really don't think it should be law to prevent me from harming myself, unlike the anti drink-driving laws which set out to prevent me from harming other people. However if I want to be so stupid, enter me in the Darwin awards!

Cloudflare checking if site is secure messages delaying web site access?
Quite frequently, when you use a VPN, Cloudflare can detect that you're using one and impose the checks. As you mentioned, that site wants to 'see' a UK server. It's normal procedure. As regards the local bus companies, just because they're both local does not mean they're using the same ISP.

Songs That Cheer You Up?
There you go - they're universal. For me Spike was my comedy hero, and i was lucky enough to meet him once courtesy of a friend who worked for the BBC. Of course Sellars was also wonderful - who can forget The Pink Panther!

PM to look into extending tourist visas to 90 days
As has been said before, there are more than you might think. When i was working, I always worked contract so could take as long a holiday as I wished between contracts. Hence 2-3 months in the UK winter. Now i'm retired, the same thing applies - 2-3 months in UK winter.

'Wise' what's up?
@soalbundy Have you perhaps got an Ad blocker on your PC that's blocking cookies from Wise? That might make it appear as if it was a different computer each time you logged in.

Petition submitted against Thaksin seeking Royal pardon
What with this and the situation in the USA, the conspiracy theorists must be having seven orgasms an hour. I bet Hollywood is sharpening up the pencils too. It makes our political buffoonery in UK look decidedly boring. ????

OTP while abroad
"Activate IR and turn off data" is my solution too. On my Thai phone, I've NEVER had data as part of my package so it's not a problem. On my UK phone Data ROAMING has always been switched off on the phone so when in UK I get data as part of my monthly package and when outside UK I just see a small warning notification that Data Roaming is disabled. As i said earlier this combination allows "otp-while-abroad" simply and effectively and is free. I really don't see that accidentally turning Data Roaming on is an issue - it's several levels down in the Settings and you have to WANT to enable it to do so.

OTP while abroad
Airplane Mode is designed to turn ALL communications off - you and I knew you could override it but I'd guess most non-technical people don't - partly because of the way it's presented. I've simply covered both possible scenarios between Thailand and UK for completeness and because I have tried and tested both.. I didn't know that all Thailand Networks do accept WiFi calling - fair enough - I just knew that some others don't. I don't personally have an issue with the "complexity" - again, non-technical people might.

OTP while abroad
No no no!!!!! If you turn on Airplane Mode the WiFi stops working - you then have to switch WiFi back on independently of Airplane Mode ( @Lemsta69 noted that above) (This is of course by design https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airplane_mode ) And you didn't read my earlier post where I said that my UK phone is a Contract SIM on Tesco Mobile (O2) https://aseannow.com/topic/1304767-otp-while-abroad/?do=findComment&comment=18308466 And the link that YOU posted said that some carriers don't support WiFi calling anyway. Richard, you're trying to invent a complex solution to a non-existent problem. My solution has worked for about 5 years now so the proof of the pudding........ Between my and @Lemsta69replies lies the easy answer...as @Lemsta69 said K.I.S.S ????

OTP while abroad
@richard_smith237 I thought I'd give that a go and there's one slight problem..... Go into your link - in the "Turn on Wi-Fi calling" section, under "Use a mobile carrier’s Wi-Fi calling", Para 4 reads "Tap Wi-Fi calling. If you don't see this option, it’s because your carrier doesn’t support this feature." So not necessarily the answer for everyone. It doesn't work for me, for example, but I've already posted my solution.; i was just experimenting.

OTP while abroad
My experience: Thai Phone AIS prepaid SIM which I keep topped up when out of Thailand. Call roaming ON, NEVER had any Data on the phone - been off from day 1 - I use WiFi in Thailand. Receiving SMS from Thailand when I'm in UK - FREE (As far as the system is concerned it's Thailand to Thailand number) Covers OTP from Thai bank when in UK UK Phone Tesco Mobile (O2) contract, pay monthly SIM Call roaming ON, Data Roaming OFF (Data goes on when I connect to Tesco Mobile when actually in UK) Receiving SMS from UK when I'm in Thailand - FREE (As far as the system is concerned it's UK to UK number) Covers OTP from UKi bank when in Thailand

Emirates air pill rules?
I realise it doesn't reply to the actual question about "high-tech devices", but on my last 2 trips, I've flown LGW-DXB-BKK and back, going through security at all 3 airports. I have to take 2 months worth of heart medication (6 pills / day) for which I do have prescriptions. I take these in my hand-carry as losing them could literally be fatal! My point is that i've never been approached / stopped anywhere on my journeys - they wouldn't know i have prescriptions unless they stopped me. So whilst I'm not suggesting any particular course of action to the OP, the risk of getting into trouble does seem minimal. This is most definitely a case of "YMMV" ????

Reread that thread which is still very much active - people are still trying to work out whether it's a scam and who's responsible

£10,000 for a tourist visa now? Part 2.
Fair points. It would still be good to hear from anyone else who has applied via the website in UK over the past (say) 2 months whether successfully or not. My last application was in January this year (2023) and was successful - that was for a SETV.

Worst Joke Ever 2026
They do BUT most Americans do not seem to understand satire, irony or sarcasm. As a Brit, I like some American humour but much of it seems very obvious to me - verging on verbal "slapstick" . Having said that, 2 of my favourite stand-up comedians are Rich Hall and Reginald D Hunter both of whom spend a lot of time in England.
