A lot of the discussion here misses the fact that Trump thought the superimposed "MS13" characters were tattoos on the guy. I would say the fact that those characters were "photoshopped" or added to the photo in some other way is "intuitively obvious to the most casual observer" who is of normal intelligence. This is completely separate question to whether his tattoos signified MS13. Completely separate question to whether the guy belonged to MS13. How could anyone completely fall to understand that photo in the way that Trump clearly did.

Lots of double talk and changing the subject. It's clear that Trump didn't understand. Only True Believers would be unable to see that.

The thing is that monks in universities and professors of Buddhism have one idea but once the thing is out in the wild it morphs as people want it to. Do all Catholics know that the Perpetual Virginity of Mary is Catholic doctrine? Do theologians at the Vatican know that if you bury a statue of Saint Joseph upside down in the yard it will assure that you sell your house at a good price? Which one of these is Catholicism? Both? Neither? What religious intellectuals think and what the everyday believer thinks are two different things. You didn't find any Buddhism here? I'm sorry you were disappointed.

I hate to say it but Trump has a history of succeeding when by rights he ought to fail. In general I have always wanted any president to succeed because I thought it would be good for the US and, not least, good for me. With Trump I have a sinking feeling that whether he succeeds at what he is trying to or if he fails at it, either way it will be bad for me.

I used to see a failing Chinese restaurant in a little strip mall in LA that was very near to a thriving Chinese restaurant. The workers in the one that wasn't making it were often standing in the shop looking out the front windows hopefully, sadly, but seldom any customers. I felt it was so sad to see them looking out and waiting for customers that didn't come.

Right. I believe this is called the "hand tip". If you give it directly to the person it's all theirs. If you put in tip box etc. it has to be shared. Also, since this custom exists in Thailand it seems that the statement that Thailand is a "non -tipping country" cannot be 100% true.
