How do you react to Thais who do not respond to greetings?
cdemundo replied to zhounan's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I live in an affluent suburb of Bangkok. There is a much used walking path (really a low traffic loop of city streets) very near to where I live. I walk there several times a week. Maybe half of the walkers say hello. About a third of them introduce themselves, ask my name, ask after my well-being etc. In general they chat and joke with me as far as their English proficiency allows. There are some who I thought standoffish until I said hi to them first and then they turned out to be friendly. These are largely retired folks and from all appearances well-to-do if not wealthy. There is only one out of about 30 regular walkers who seems to feel superior (at least it seems that way). These are people who could easily look down on me as a foreigner, they may not be HI-SO but they are definitely not low status individuals. So my thinking is that just like anywhere, xenophobia, snobbishness, and maybe just a desire to be left alone exist but are certainly not universal among Thais. -

"Don't you understand? It's the principle of the thing!" Always idiotic thinking, as you said, what did he think was gonna happen? -
That's what's important in this discussion?

Right, how smart (or dumb) is the average American? Half of them are dumber than that.

Pattaya Man Seeks Medical Help for Ring Stuck Around His Genitals

I talked to an emergency room doctor once who told me that removal of objects from the anus and rectum was routine, probably daily/nightly task. He said the patients almost always had ridiculous explanations for how it got there. Your example was very close to one he told me about, the guy had a light bulb inserted, claimed he was changing a light bulb and fell off the ladder. Mr. Bean couldn't come up with a way for that to result in a light bulb in the butt. -
Bill Maher viciously roasts expats and expat destinations

I am not a big fan of Bill Maher but he can be very funny. Is he successful? He had enough spare change under the couch cushions to contribute a million dollars to an Obama super Pac in 2011. He is certainly financially successful. -

"a pseudo-intellectual, who is extremely intelligent...in his own mind. In actuality, he is just a bombastic nitwit of the 4th kind." Huh, Bill Maher ya say? -

"Wouldn't make it elsewhere." Right, because English-speaking entertainers all aspire to be popular in South Africa, Gibraltar, and Tasmania. Who would want to be successful in the USA? -
James Garner has a great bit in one of his western movies, he is telling another guy that he doesn't observe any of the privileges for women, holding doors, man always pays etc. The other guy says "Well I was always taught..." to treat women special. Garner says, "Who taught you that?" Guy says "My mother." Garner says "Right, a woman". (Can't remember the name of the movie, anyone here know?).

The expansion of Benjakiti Park has been a great success. Many people making use of the paths and trails everyday. Facilities for football, basketball, pickle ball in covered buildings so out of the hot sun. Really a lovely park.

Medical oxygen cylinder- safe to leave in a hot car?
cdemundo replied to poppysdad's topic in Health and Medicine
I am not sure about cost, but have you looked into a portable oxygen concentrator? Cost: I just Googled them and prices advertised from 23k to 43k baht. But ongoing costs are low. You don't have to worry about refills only recharging the battery. So maybe more convenient than tanks. They are small now as manufacturing them has advanced, maybe the size of a briefcase. Definitely would fit in a backpack. Then you just have to manage battery recharging and not worry about pressurized cylinders. -

I just had blood test for Hep B. The took 2 blood sample with a 1 hour wait in between which I don't really understand. Anyone know the reason for this? Doctor said negative for infection and no treatment necessary which is all i really need to know. But she said several times that my immune system was very, very active. I am not really clear what she meant. I had a Hep B vaccination series in 1998 so maybe that is why my immune system was very, very active when tested for Hep B. I know I don't need treatment but I am not clear on the meaning of what the doctor said. Anyone can clarify for me? Thanks. -
Drunk British Man Launches Brutal Attack on Pattaya Bolt Driver: Update
cdemundo replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
"you let yourself get carried away" Right, I got carried away. I said the guy might be a cheapskate. Man what was I thinking? A guy who got into a violent fight over less than 200 THB might be a cheapskate? Obviously absurd. Right, I got even more belligerent. I used a phrase that essentially means "get lost", wow, I was so carried away, so belligerent. Strange that you consider being told to get lost as intimidation. You imagine I have a speech impediment? I imagine your response as being accompanied by a generous spray of spittle on your keyboard. You are raging over something you weren't even a party to and which amounted to a dispute over something like 200THB. No doubt you will want the last word so I will leave you to it.
