Educate yourself please. Disc brakes are easily associated with most modern cars. This is because of their quick braking response and superior power, especially in wet environments. However, you’d be surprised that there are modern cars that still use drum brakes. Pick-up trucks still have drum brakes and there are good reasons for it. https://amanandhisgear.com/why-do-pickups-still-have-drum-brakes#:~:text=Drum brakes work with a,motorcycles%2C and lower end cars. -

Correct, the whole system is broken from top to bottom and they are beyond being able to fix it now imo. They don't have the ability or the courage to tackle the problem. I was in Bangkok last night on the expressways for the first time in a couple of years and I was actually shocked by the amount of 'expensive' fast cars weaving in and out of traffic. It was like a racetrack, endangering normal motorists like myself who were plodding along below the speed limits. -

Most pickups have drum brakes on the rear which are inadequate at speed. They are not meant to be going fast, as you state they are for moving goods around. -

A Thai license should not be recognised anywhere in the West. Minimum amount of lessons, full test (theory and practical) with assessor, and onto provisional plates for a period should be required for all Thais wanting to drive. -
Yup. Not to forget Thailand supported the Khmer Rouge militarily on Thai soil and in the UN as the legitimate govt. of Cambodia after they were ousted by the Vietnamese and after the genocide came to light. That was US led of course. Pol Pot lived in Trat under Thai special forces protection for a time too. Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.

People missing the real reason Thaksin was removed and that was for stopping the government owned banks from bailing out their rich mates and their failed businesses to the tune of billions as well as actually spending money on projects to help the poorest in the country. Sure it was populism and it won him votes, but it was better than nothing. Once the money stopped, out came the Yellow Shirts, led by Sondhi and backed by his media empire, ironically itself bailed out to the tune of billions by Viroj at KTB, whom Thaksin correctly removed from his position. Let's not let real facts get in the way. Thaksin corrupt! Thaksin bad! Just parrot the mantra from the barstool. Dribble dribble. He shut our bars! No sense of humility from those here that supported the coup, but not expected. What a mess we're in now.

Thailand trapped in a household debt quagmire

Diddling foreigners and local boondoggles only get you so far. Coming down to Earth with a very reliable (and predictable) thump. -
This is one of the reasons I changed my mind about Thaksin eventually. Even though he was notorious for trying to deflect questions and evade difficult subjects locally he fronted it out in the international media. After that CNN interview I found a new respect for him, which I never had before he was elected or during his first term in office. He was eloquent, direct, answered coherently and cleverly... in many ways he showed he really was a politician. Only Mark Vejj has been on international media since I think, stand to be corrected though. He was educated at the highest levels in England so in some ways expected to be grilled by the international press. These current guys are just uneducated thugs and gangsters. None of whom could appear on international media because they are simply too thick and arrogant. Some bar girls I know would fare better.

It was utterly bizarre. As I stated I was in the outside lane. As he pulled out he sort of drifted across right in front of me, by that point I was already braking. At first it looked as if he was going to end up in the middle lane but he drifted right across. Never seen a Thai on a scooter do that. Seen 'em do daft things like cross four lanes to make a u-turn tho' He could have easily turned into the middle lane and moved over after I had passed him, then I would have moved back over to the middle lane. Bizarre and dangerous riding to be sure.

I took my driving test here in Thailand in something similar back in the '90s. ???? They wouldn't just swap me a Thai license because I only had the old British paper one. The UK hadn't started issuing the photocards yet! I received a permanent Thai license which was a bit of paper with my passport photo laminated. A photocard of sort!
