Economic News to Make the Trump Haters Scream
placeholder replied to Yagoda's topic in Political Soapbox
So you're saying that will happen despite evidence of past corporate spin and corporate lies? How does your belief differ from that of a cult member? -
Trump is a guy who had the genius to be born rich. He got several hundred million from his father who was a highly successful builder of big real estate projects. His son ran that business into the ground. Then he ran several other businesses into the ground. The reason was that the great negotiator repeatedly got outnegotiated by paying way too much for what he bought. Finally, his credit was so bad that NY Banks refused to lend him any more money.

You don't seem to get it. If a news article announced that Jesus is coming but doesn't say what date, then it deserves criticism as being possibly fictional. Especially given the failure of past predictions. But if Jesus actually does show up and people continue to criticize, well, I guess they'll be damned to hell for all eternity. Another way of looking at this article is that it's a "Check is in the mail" story. -
The government admitted that it had uncovered no evidence of fraud. "During that hearing, Chutkan pressed DOJ attorneys on whether the federal government had found any evidence of widespread waste, fraud, or abuse in the program, as EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin has alleged. DOJ attorney Marc Sacks said the government had not gathered new evidence to that effect. “Here we are, weeks in, and you’re still unable to proffer me any evidence with regard to malfeasance,” Chutkan told DOJ attorneys at the hearing, adding that the government had shifted its reasoning for cutting off grants to the eight large nonprofits — from citing evidence of wrongdoing to citing a change in administration policy."

And this is relevant how? As usual, you make it about me rather than the issues at hand. And that's because you've got nothing. -
Judge rules against Trump admin after it couldn’t find evidence of fraud in clean energy program A federal judge ruled against the Trump administration in the case that alleged fraud in a Biden-era clean energy program, unfreezing roughly $20 billion in funding meant to support projects like new solar energy arrays and efficiency upgrades for small businesses. Judge Tanya Chutkan on Tuesday ruled in favor of the eight nonprofits that sued Citibank and the Trump administration, finding that the Environmental Protection Agency unlawfully terminated the program. Chutkan ordered the congressionally appropriated funds to be unfrozen at 2 p.m. Thursday and distributed to the nonprofits they were originally intended for. https://edition.cnn.com/2025/04/16/climate/epa-clean-energy-ruling/index.html ...a career federal prosecutor in Washington resigned after alleging that Trump administration officials had pressured her to launch a criminal investigation against the green banking grant recipients despite a lack of evidence of waste, fraud or abuse. Denise Cheung, the head of the criminal division in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, said in her resignation letter that the Justice Department had also sent a letter to Citibank “recommending” that it freeze the accounts while an investigation proceeded. Later, The Washington Post reported that interim U.S. Attorney Ed Martin had applied for a warrant to seize the accounts, which a U.S. magistrate judge rejected. https://www.politico.com/news/2025/04/15/gold-bars-fbi-probe-trumps-effort-to-pry-back-money-from-bidens-climate-spending-00287328?utm_source=chatgpt.com

Hard to tell whether the author of article linked to is just naive or deceptive. Would companies have made these investments anyway, regardless of Trump's new tariffs? Would investments have been even more if the tariff plan had never been enacted? Take Apple for instance. Much was made of its plan to spend $500 billion dollars over the next 4 years. But as it turns out... Apple’s $500 Billion U.S. Investment Is Mostly Already in the Books Expansion plan in America is in line with company’s spending pattern and efforts to diversify manufacturing away from China https://archive.ph/Xpt3i Another issue is how many of these investments will actually materialize. As some may recall, during Trump's 1st term... Trump takes credit for Foxconn's 'incredible investment' Taiwanese manufacturing giant Foxconn announced plans to invest $10bn (£7.6bn) in a new factory in the US. The plant, to be located in Wisconsin, is expected to make LCD panels and employ 3,000 people initially. President Donald Trump, claimed credit for Foxconn's "incredible investment" which he said would not have happened if he had not been elected. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-40732035 Foxconn mostly abandons $10 billion Wisconsin project touted by Trump Taiwan electronics manufacturer Foxconn is drastically scaling back a planned $10 billion factory in Wisconsin. Under a deal, Foxconn will reduce its planned investment to $672 million from $10 billion, and slash the number of new jobs to 1,454 from 13,000. The deal was first announced at the White House in July 2017, with then-president Donald Trump boasting of it as an example of how his “America First” agenda could revive U.S. tech manufacturing. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/21/foxconn-mostly-abandons-10-billion-wisconsin-project-touted-by-trump.html What technology is going to revitalize the failed Foxconn center in Wisconsin? The White House on Wednesday announced a $3.3 billion investment by Microsoft to build an AI data center on the site. Part of President Joe Biden’s Investing in America initiative, this project is expected to create 2,300 union construction jobs and 2,000 permanent jobs. Biden even traveled to Mount Pleasant to join Microsoft in making the announcement. https://www.govtech.com/question-of-the-day/what-technology-is-going-to-revitalize-the-failed-foxconn-center-in-wisconsin Finally, to make sense of this number, it would make sense to compare it to investment amounts in previous years, including promises vs reality.- 41 replies

WASHINGTON—A former top Trump administration official targeted with a federal investigation by President Trump said he would fight back against what he called an unprecedented campaign by the government to punish dissent. Chris Krebs, one of Trump’s top cybersecurity officials in his first term, will resign from a leading security firm to more freely challenge the White House, he said. He joins a small but growing list of universities and law firms seeking to push back on Trump’s efforts to use the office of the president to attack critics and opponents. https://archive.ph/I85XZ

How stupid is China for retaliating to Trumps tariffs?

It's not about the bond market freezing up. It's about the high rate of interest that will have to be paid because of a lack of trust in the American government. -

The president of the United States is openly using the Justice Department to exact revenge. Not only that he's also waging war on the Constitution. The Constitution grants those facing actual or possible criminal prosecution the right to counsel. Trump is punishing those who act in accordance with that right. -

China Halts Critical Exports as Trade War Intensifies

Please, I kind of doubt that Vietnam, the Phillipines, India, and other nations agree with you that China is not bullying others. It's made the extraordinary claim that most of the South China Sea, no matter how far from China, belongs to China. It has backed up its claim with military force against its neighbors. If that's not bullying, what is. What are these Chinese characteristics that differ from standard big state socialism? And as occurred repeatedly, there's nothing the Chinese like better than underwriting big financially dubious projects for corrupt government and then exacting their pound of flesh when these projects inevitably go south. Just one example is Sri Lanka. Both India and the IMF turned down support the corrupt government's plan for a big project because it was obviously doomed to fail. China now has a permanent presence on the island as a result of that failure. And that's just one example. -
How stupid is China for retaliating to Trumps tariffs?
placeholder replied to hotsun's topic in Political Soapbox
First off, you are assuming that being willing to go to the negotiating table means that they are willing to strike a better deal..And does a better deal mean no tariffs. So far Trump has insisted on a 10% tariff baseline. And the fact is And your arithmetic is defective. You write that "many other countries" are willing to negotiate and then you leap to the conclusion that "only Chinese products will be affected". Since when does "all countries" minus "many countries = no countries except for China? And where did you come up with the fantasy that "only China is fighting that"? -

Guilty: Trump becomes first former US president convicted of felony crimes Donald Trump became the first former American president to be convicted of felony crimes Thursday as a New York jury found him guilty of all 34 charges in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush money payment to a porn actor who said the two had sex. Trump sat stone-faced while the verdict was read as cheering from the street below could be heard in the hallway on the courthouse’s 15th floor where the decision was revealed after more than nine hours of deliberations. https://apnews.com/article/trump-trial-deliberations-jury-testimony-verdict-85558c6d08efb434d05b694364470aa0 -

You've got to be kidding. The only reason Trump didn't go after his enemies via the justice dept was that he chose AGs who couldn't bring themselves to sink that low. For his second term he's solved that problem. -

China Halts Critical Exports as Trade War Intensifies
placeholder replied to placeholder's topic in Political Soapbox
Actually, it depends on how you measure an economy. In terms of purchasing power it's already number 1. But it does face huge problems. For one, Xi has favored the public, money losing sector over the private sector. One again, the public sector is larger than the private sector. Xi has compelled the private sector to provide loans to the public sector. Loans which most likely will go unpaid. One of the reasons that China's use of capital is so inefficient. There's a lot more too. So there was a lot of doubt that China would ever truly be number 1. On the other hand, Trump seems to be offering it a helping hand if only relatively.
