Goldman Sachs are wary of 500K of US job losses due to tariffs

Are you claiming that all those jobs can be done by machines or robots? Most of them? You got any facts to support that? -

Have you already forgotten one of Trump's major U turns? Trump supports immigration visas backed by Musk: ‘I have many H-1B visas on my properties’ President-elect Donald Trump told The Post Saturday he supports immigration visas for highly skilled workers, appearing to side with Elon Musk in the roiling intra-MAGA debate on the issue. “I’ve always liked the visas, I have always been in favor of the visas. That’s why we have them,” Trump said by phone, referring to the H-1B program, which permits companies to hire foreign workers in specialty occupations. https://nypost.com/2024/12/28/us-news/donald-trump-backs-h-1b-visa-program-supported-by-elon-musk/ -

To repeat: How does this prove that Laetitia James' prosecution against Trump was defective? How is this an own goal? Would it be one if she hadn't authorized the prosecution of Trump? -

So what is your point? How does this prove that Laetitia James' prosecution against Trump was defective? Are you saying that if James hadn't authorized a prosecution against Trump, this suggested investigation wouldn't have happened? -
How stupid is China for retaliating to Trumps tariffs?
placeholder replied to hotsun's topic in Political Soapbox
And you don't think Americans are going to be hurt by Trump's tariffs? Remember, it isn't only China that will be striking back at US taiffs. And as I have pointed out repeatedly, Xi isn't facing midterm elections. -

From the article you linked to: "We believe we can manage the tariffs - though of course they will be very painful - so while that is a factor (behind this investment), it's not the driving factor," Novartis Chief Executive Vas Narasimhan said in an interview, adding that it aims to produce all the drugs it sells to Americans in the U.S. rather than import them. The Basel, Switzerland-based drugmaker has previously said it hoped to become a top-five player in the U.S. pharmaceuticals market, the largest in the world, as part of a U.S.-first strategy. -
"It's a result that holds across class, education, and racial lines," wrote Colin Grabow, associate director at Cato's Herbert A. Stiefel Center for Trade Policy Studies, when the survey came out. "The most enthusiastic group, those aged 18–29, still registered just 36% interest in manufacturing employment." Grabow went on to note that as of May 2024, there were around 600,000 open positions in manufacturing (there's almost 500,000 open today, according to the St. Louis Federal Reserve), so there isn't exactly a shortage of roles out there. https://www.yahoo.com/news/americans-want-more-u-factory-080000279.html

Tax Cuts Are Primarily Responsible for the Increasing Debt Ratio Without the Bush and Trump tax cuts, debt as a percentage of the economy would be declining permanently. https://www.americanprogress.org/article/tax-cuts-are-primarily-responsible-for-the-increasing-debt-ratio/

IRS to Lose Billions in Revenue If Migrants Stop Filing Taxes

"A report from the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) reveals that immigrant workers account for 51% of all dairy labor. Moreover, dairies that employ immigrant laborers produce a staggering 79% of the U.S. milk supply. Dr. Robert Hagevoort of New Mexico State University, speaking at the Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council (DCRC) Annual Meetings last week in Arlington, Texas, says he believes the true percentage may be even higher, as the NMPF report goes back to 2015." https://www.dairyherd.com/news/labor/essential-role-immigrant-labor-u-s-dairy-industry -

In this case it's Trump who's discouraging them by penalizing them. Making them wear lead weights if they do jump. -
First off, those aren't inflation adjusted figures for Reagan and Bush. And they slashed taxes but promised that increased growth would pay for them. That was an obvious lie at the time and history has confirmed Counterscyclical spending under Obama was due to the 2008 financial crisis. The worst financial crisis since the great depression With Trump it's more complicated. Part of that is due to his tax cut which he promised would pay for itself with increased economic activity it didn't. But part of it was due to covid and the need for countercyclical spending due to Covid. Biden, too, had to spend to counter the effects of covid on the economy. And once again, Trump is pushing for a tax cut and Congress is cooking the books to give it to him.

Apart from the dubious method of threatening countries to cooperate, china has a huge and advanced industrial base. How many years do you think it would take to replace? How much sacrifice do you think the American electorate is willing to put up with. Trump didn't campaign calling on Americans to make sacrifices. And by the way, right now Greenland produces zero rare earths. And not much else either in the way of minerals. It's got a punishing climate. -

But why would you want to discourage those people from jumping in the first place? And of course, if they're on the 10th floor, they might see the jumper's solution as suicidal. -

I don't think it's incumbent upon me to give you remedial reading lessons. I was critiquing the logical proposition inherent in what you claim that if quantity x is good, then quantity x+y is better and quantity x+y+z is better still. Now as a logical proposition, it works. But as a rational one, not so much. More isn't always better. Sometimes more makes things worse. -
There is also the notion of let the punishment fit the crime. Do you have any familiarity with the The US Constitution. It bans cruel and unusual punishment. It also grants the right to habeas corpus as the Supreme Court confirmed. And thanks for the reflexive deflections about Trump's legal travails.

Actually, you might want to put where he's working in the past tense. That said, he's clearly an ignoramus about how the government works. It's easy to demonstrate the depths of his ignorance. At first he claimed he could cut 2 trillion a year. Then it was 1 trilllion. Now he's claiming that 150 billion was cut and that's a exaggeration. Bill Clinton set up a commission and they worked for months delving into the minutiae of government before changes were made. Musk publicly posed with a chainsaw. Such a destructive ignoramus.

"Seeking to provide a fuller picture of who was imprisoned, a team of Times reporters and researchers ran the 238 names through three U.S. public records databases, checked backgrounds in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Chile, scoured court documents and news articles, spoke to dozens of family members and interviewed experts on Tren de Aragua." https://archive.ph/A2sXY The reporters did find that out of the 238 men deported, 32 were guilty of grave crime and another 24 guilty of committing lower level offenses in the USA like speeding in a school zone, trespassing or operating an improperly registered vehicle. But as for the rest... "But for the others, including Mr. Suárez, the musician, The Times found no evidence of a criminal background, beyond offenses related to being unauthorized migrants. Mr. Suárez’s family presented official certificates from Venezuela, Colombia and Chile — where he lived in the past — saying he had no convictions in those nations." https://archive.ph/A2sXY

So you think it's irrelevant to point out that not only has Musk fallen far short of his 1 trillion dollar claim (actually 2 trillion when he first broached the idea) but is still offering falsehoods about how much he has actually saved. And given that Doge has managed to save far less than projected, do you think it might mean that he's basically a destructive ignoramus. As has been pointed out elsewhere, Bill Clinton managed a big reduction in the size of the federal workforce but did it in a planned deliberative way.

China tells airlines to suspend Boeing jet deliveries
placeholder replied to FriscoKid's topic in Political Soapbox
The article is biased. It's about China suspending the purchase of jets. Its reasons for doing so are clearly part of the story. What other nations may be doing is not part of this story. As for "We all knew it was coming..." speak for yourself.
