For years I read lots of books mostly academic texts right down to the punctuation because of this. Now my most favorite read is PDF screenplays.

Do you shower before going in to swimmingpool?
jerrymahoney replied to Hummin's topic in The Wellness Zone
My recent swimming pool issue was with a girth-challenged female who insisted on wearing street clothes in the moo ban swimming pool. And she was not going to change her routine because of what some farang said. And since this was early in the morning before any official staff arrived, nothing changed for about a month. Giving me extreme emotional distress. After finally getting to the right person-- things changed. She was obviously told: Proper swimwear (as is posted on the large sign in Thai) or else. -
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem struggles to define habeas corpus at Senate hearing "Habeas corpus is a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country," Noem said. “That’s incorrect,” a Democratic senator responded. Updated May 21, 2025 "I want to clarify your position," Hassan asked. "What is habeas corpus?" "Well, habeas corpus is a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country, and suspend their right to ... ," Noem responded before she was cut off by Hassan. "That's incorrect," the senator said. <SKIP> Sen. Andy Kim, D-N.J., later asked Noem if she knew what article of the Constitution the clause is in. "No, I do not, sir," she said. Kim said it was in Article One, which outlines the powers of Congress, not the president. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/homeland-security-secretary-kristi-noem-struggles-define-habeas-corpus-rcna207986

George H.W. Bush and the Iran-Contra Affair (1992) In 1992, outgoing President George H.W. Bush issued preemptive pardons to six individuals involved in the Iran-Contra affair, including former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger. Weinberger had been charged with lying to Congress about the Reagan administration’s covert arms sales to Iran and diversion of funds to Nicaraguan rebels. Bush argued that the pardons were necessary to prevent what he viewed as unjust prosecutions driven by political motivations. Critics, however, contended that the pardons obstructed efforts to fully uncover the truth about the scandal. https://www.criminallawlibraryblog.com/preemptive-pardons-constitutional-authority-and-real-world-implications/

Even MAGA Is Up in Arms Over Trump’s ‘Flying Grift’ From Qatar

Qatar's Gift to Trump Is Unsold Plane It's Been Trying to Dump for Years Published May 15, 2025 at 6:07 AM EDT The jet, a lavishly configured version of Boeing's largest passenger aircraft, has been lingering without a buyer since being put up for sale in 2020, according to aircraft listings and aviation analysts. Despite its luxury interior, the plane has failed to find a buyer since being put on the market in 2020, according to a report from Forbes. John Goglia, a former member of the National Transportation Safety Board, told Forbes that giving the 747-8 to the U.S. would allow the Qataris to avoid maintenance costs that were only getting higher—with the 747 fleet shrinking worldwide and fewer mechanics available who know how to work on them. https://www.newsweek.com/qatar-gift-trump-unsold-plane-2072564 -

They were only 'selling' tourist visas. I see it that the in-country citizenship made more sense say one hundred years ago when travel to/from the US was much more difficult to synchronize a visit with childbirth. But at the Supreme Court last week then you have the conundrum of babies born under any circumstance in the US as to what IS in fact their citizenship -

‘Birth tourism’ organizer jailed over scheme to bring pregnant Chinese women to US Los Angeles (AP) A California woman was sentenced Monday to more than three years in prison in a long-running case over a business that helped pregnant Chinese women travel to the United States to deliver babies who automatically became American citizens. US District Judge R. Gary Klausner gave Phoebe Dong a 41-month sentence and ordered her immediately taken into custody from his federal court in Los Angeles. Dong and her husband were convicted in September of conspiracy and money laundering through their company, USA Happy Baby. <SKIP> Federal prosecutors sought a more than five-year sentence for Dong and argued that she and Liu helped more than 100 pregnant Chinese women travel to the US. They said the pair worked with others to coach women on how to trick customs officials by flying into airports believed to be more lax while wearing loose-fitting clothing to hide their pregnancies. “For tens of thousands of dollars each, defendant helped her numerous customers deceive US authorities * and buy US citizenship for their children,” prosecutors said in court filings. They declined to comment after the sentencing. https://edition.cnn.com/2025/01/27/us/woman-sentenced-chinese-birth-tourism-intl-hnk * I read elsewhere that was in part related to coaching on the interview for "What is the purpose of your trip?" -

Judge blocks Trump’s ‘blatantly unconstitutional’ executive order that aims to end birthright citizenship Updated 3:55 PM EST, Thu January 23, 2025 A federal judge said Thursday that President Donald Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship was “blatantly unconstitutional” and issued a temporary restraining order to block it. Judge John Coughenour, a Ronald Reagan appointee who sits in Seattle, granted the request by Washington Attorney General Nick Brown and three other Democratic-led states for the emergency order halting implementation of the policy for the next 14 days while there are more briefings in the legal challenge. “I have been on the bench for over four decades. I can’t remember another case where the question presented was as clear,” Coughenour said. https://edition.cnn.com/2025/01/23/politics/birthright-citizenship-lawsuit-hearing-seattle -

Very reassuring to know you are sure. As to what the feds can do, it has been called an OOPSIE as in a judge saying "You can't do that" and the fed lawyers saying "OOPSIE we've already done it." -

The Executive Order 14156: Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship outlines two categories of individuals it claims are “born in the United States and not subject to the jurisdiction thereof,” and thus not automatically extended citizenship: 1) a child of an undocumented mother and a father who is not a citizen or lawful permanent resident; and 2) a child of a mother who is a temporary visitor and a father who is not a citizen or lawful permanent resident. The new order attempts to make ancestry a criteria for acquiring citizenship—it requires children born on U.S. soil to have at least one parent with U.S. citizenship or a green card to be born a U.S. citizen. https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/birthright-citizenship-united-states ************** As far as the 'Invasion' executive order, it claims the 1789 Act allows suspension of due process during an "invasion". -

NB The phrase "subject to the jurisdiction thereof" within the 14th amendment is being challenged in the Exec Order with a much narrower interpretation than is generally acknowledged. The 14th amendment is at issue in both the Immigration (Invasion) and Birthright executive orders. -

The big legal question on immigration is whether as in the March 15 exec order there was an 'invasion' as invoked and required in the 1789 Act "by a foreign nation or government." The above quote was from the JAN 20 Exec Order. -

10:40 p.m. GMT+7, May 15, 2025 Barrett emerges as key vote in birthright case Justice Amy Coney Barrett, a member of the court’s conservative wing, repeatedly pressed President Donald Trump’s attorney about why the government is avoiding the merits of the birthright citizenship case. Her line of questioning drew an important concession from Solicitor General D. John Sauer, who acknowledged the legal arguments defending the merits of Trump’s order were “novel” and “sensitive.” “So this one isn’t clear cut on the merits,” Barrett asked. Sauer agreed. https://edition.cnn.com/politics/live-news/supreme-court-birthright-citizenship-cases-05-15-25 -

Biden’s Cognitive Struggles Resurface Amid Leaked Interview Audio

I remember reading things like this: -- Biden signals to aides that he would serve only a single term / 12/NOV/2019 So, I really wasn't paying much attention to Biden when in office. At least on AN/TV most of my political activity the latter part of Biden's term was in saying that the criminal and civil cases against Trump were a big mistake -- and felt confident in saying so as many otherwise lefty-leaning legal scholars and former prosecutors were saying the same thing both legally and politically.
