What Movies or TV shows are you watching (2024)
I saw a show that mentioned that Spielberg had done one comedy in his career. 1941, about hysteria in California about a Japanese invasion there after Pearl Harbor. Featuring actors from SNL's 1970's golden age. Sure many of the situations were comedic in concept, but after watching the entire movie I realized I hadn't laughed or even chuckled even once. I missed it back than and I guess I'm saying you can miss it now.

Rising Toll: 16,000 Russian Soldiers Killed in Ukraine Since April
Estimates of Russians (many highly skilled working age ones) who have fled Russia thanks to Putin are between one and three miliion. Estimates of westerners moving to Russia to seek what they perceive as a white Christian nationalist extremely anti LGBT ideology society esimated at about 5,000.

You can't have good faith peace talks with Putin. For Putin, this is a war of choice. For Ukraine, it's a matter of survival as a sovereign nation. Sure Putin might agree to a freeze in front lines but it will only be temporary until the Russian army regroups.

Rising Wave of Anti-Semitism Sparks Fears of a Dark Future for Jewish Communities
It's coming from multiple sides. Anyone that says it's only coming from one side is either lying or very badly misinformed.

What Movies or TV shows are you watching (2024)
Reunion 1989 movie Screenplay by Harold Pinter. Mixed reviews at the time but I thought it was great. The story of an ideal (non sexual) boyhood friendship between the son of a very German Jewish doctor and the son of a top aristocrat during the rise of the Nazis. Predictably because of the era, things fall apart. Reunion (1989) - IMDb

Effects of ingesting THC Cannabis Oil versus Inhaling THC from Cannabis
Eating it must be processed through the liver so the effects last a very long time. Under the tongue is more immediate and lasts shorter similar to smoking or dry herb vaping.

Its Happening - Law to Tax Overseas Income Now in Progress
No. The point was look at the value at the end of 2023 and a member seemed to be saying as that amount was earned before then, ALL of it was not Thai taxable, for life. Withdrawing as needed, for life. But don't look at me for definitive advice on these matters. I am completely confused and probably will remain so for a very long time.

I have no idea what you're talking about. 500K in IRAs trad or Roth or 401ks are almost always invested in something. Not just sitting there. If not Roth, taking out huge chunks gets a huge US tax bill so the incentive is to only withdrawal what you actually need or are forced to under IRA rules at about age 72.

More confusion for me. So if you had 500K USD in a retirement account on that date, you could then bring in up to 500K for the rest of your life Thai tax free? Seperate from government pensions which are another thing.

US Medicare - what do most expats do?
Giving false information if discovered WILL end the policy. But it's a big trend now in Mexico and Panama for expats with U.S. addresses on record with SS and Medicare (must be the same) to pose as part time expats and use Advantage for emergency coverage. It's no good for chronic illnesses. I don't endorse this. Just reporting about it.

US Medicare - what do most expats do?
No. For Part B you don't have to be in the U.S. EVER. You can pay for it then. But you can't use it abroad. ENJOY!

U.S. Topic -- Clarification sought about starting Medicare Part B upon repatriation
Medicare advantage REPLACES B. As you're talking about initial signup at anytime when you turn 65, it make sense that during that exemption time period (open enrollment not needed) you could somehow enroll in Advantage at that time. I don't know how. But I didn't see that as your question. Your question seemed to be that you already signed up for A and B during initial exemption period and then wanted Advantage. People can only change programs during the open enrollment period unless under an exemption.

You'd need to change to Advantage during open enrollment.

In that case, if you didn't touch it the only income would be dividends. If you sold funds within the account, that would be a profit or loss. If your theory is correct, that might indicate the withdrawals from traditional IRAs wouldn't Thai tax events either. At this point I'm not so much worried about the tax liability, as how much time I will need to take and money to spend on "tax advisors" who will probably all have different opinions. This is extremely annoying. I can't even imagine that Thai tax law will address every weird angle of every type of financial activity of every nation in the world. More likely they'll throw this half baked stuff out there and watch us scramble like headless chickens. I'm too invested here at this point -- but I will say to others: DO NOT COME.

These Days: Can ANYONE even imagine BIDEN with another 4 yrs in the White House?
I can imagine him being president during a second term if he had continued running and had won. Running for president, doing debates, etc. is a different thing than actually being president. Do I think he would have lasted the entire four years? I don't know. I'm not God. But if not, then we would have Harris, who we will hopefully have starting in January.

This is a very interesting issue to me as I have a traditional taxed in the US as income IRA. People with Roth IRA's are not taxed on withdrawals. What's confusing to me is that why should the Thai tax system see any withdrawal from basically a retirement savings account (Roth IRA, trad IRA, or 401K) as income even if the U.S. system does? I'm not certain that they would. Also, IF they do, aren't people with Roth IRAs at risk as being taxed on withdrawals by Thailand even though they're exempt in the U.S.? Is there really any DTA law to cover this mess?!?

Why is Trump Really Running for Office Again?
To dodge prison is the main reason. He also loves the pomp and circumstance of the office, fancies himself a dictator, loves to be worshipped and loves to punish those who don't worship him and make all such people fear him, but doesn't like to do the actual work involved of a normal presidency. He's an extremely dangerous and mentally deranged individual. Yes also he is mentally deteriorating at a rapid pace. Compared to Biden, he's as decrepit as Biden, but has been graded on a curve by the media, because he's always been insane. VOTE HIM OUT! Next ...

Allan Lichtman, the Nostradamus of U.S. presidential predictions has made his FINAL pick
I don't know about this popular vote vs. actual outcome controversy but I do know his current position recently stated is the truth that the popular national vote is irrelevant. So as far as his current prediction it's only about the results, not the popular vote. Of course there is zero chance Trump will win the popular vote.

Thailand is played out. Expats where will you live now?
The medical benefits are over exagerrated. Realistically in an emergency only those near the border have much chance of getting care in the U.S. Many do live in Northern Baja coast Ensenada which isn't too bad. Mexico is a big country. The Medicare benefit is there in terms of people claiming they live in the US and using Medicare Advantage based on a US zip code, and snowbird part time expat types. But sure can also be used for non emergency stuff more easily than if you live in Thailand. Most full time expats outside the border areas end up arranging their health care needs in the Mexican system which does have various options including paying cash which is priced lower for non tourists.

J.D.Vance declines to criticize Tucker Carlson over his friendly chat with Holocaust Denier
No surprise. Both Tucker and Vance both useful idiots for Putin or worse.
