Foreign Biker Kills Finnish Pedestrian in Pattaya Crash

A 55-year-old Finnish man was killed after being struck by a high-speed big bike while crossing Jomtien Second Road in Pattaya late on March 20, 2026, with the foreign rider also left seriously injured. The incident occurred at approximately 21:40 near Rompho Jomtien Market. Emergency responders rushed both men to hospital, but the pedestrian later died from his injuries.

Police from Pattaya City Police Station were alerted to the crash and coordinated with rescue volunteers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation and medical staff from Bangkok Hospital Pattaya. At the scene, a large crowd of residents and tourists had gathered around two severely injured foreign men lying in the road. The pedestrian, identified as Mr Mika Kristian Turpeinen, 55, from Finland, was found without a pulse and received CPR before being transported to hospital, where he later died.

The motorcyclist, a foreign man believed to be aged between 30 and 40, was not carrying identification documents. He suffered serious injuries and was transferred to Pattaya City Hospital for urgent treatment. His condition remains under close medical supervision.

Police located the wreckage of a green Kawasaki Z800 motorcycle some distance from the point of impact. The vehicle, bearing Chonburi registration, was damaged and found overturned after skidding into a parked car, causing further damage.

An eyewitness, Mr Winai Rungjaemjaeng, 71, told officers he heard the motorcycle travelling at high speed with a loud, continuous engine noise before a sudden crash. He said the bike lost control, slid along the road and struck a parked vehicle, throwing the rider onto the road.

Another witness, a Finnish national speaking through an interpreter, stated that the deceased was his friend. He confirmed that the victim had been crossing the road when the motorcycle struck him at speed, causing fatal injuries.

Police have documented the scene and are reviewing nearby CCTV footage while continuing to question witnesses. Officers are working to establish the exact cause of the crash and will proceed with legal action in accordance with the findings.

I was in Jomtien a couple of weeks ago, and noticed a green Kawasaki Z800 with a loud pipe going up and down the beach road at stupid speeds. Probably the same guy, as the Z800 was not a popular bike so not too many about. It was an unusually heavy bike and was replaced by a lighter Z1000.

Weight plus speed plus idiot rider is a lethal combination. And while I'm a fan of motorcycles, I do agree that anything over 500cc is just unnecessary in Thailand.

Why in God's name, does anyone need an 800cc bike on Pattaya??

I would be happier if firstly all Thais that drive a M Vehicle or M Bike are taught what it means when they see a zebra crossing. Marked for Pedestrians and dumb a.ss Drivers that think it means to speed up and avoid cars that actually stopped.

Till that day with regards to," ban all high speed motorcycles", dream on.

This comment makes no sense at all.

I have a 1262cc Ducati, 200hp.

Why would you want my motorcycle banned?

There was a famous architect in the US who was pushing for cars to be banned in city centers.

I don't know if it's feasible.

Still too much traffic for my liking. I wish the streets were quieter.

You a Ducati guy?

Every week, there's a story of a motorcycle fatality right here reported on AN.

You drive safely or recklessly?

I've be riding big bikes, over 1,000cc since 2004 here in Thailand.

I only ride late afternoon, not raining and before I've been drinking.

I mostly stick to the speed limit, occasionally I'll take off quick from the traffic lights then back off to the speed limit. My bike has Termignoni's, it sounds awesome and gives everyone around me a thrill.

I'm a show off, my bike is awesome, I never ride recklessly.

The largest bike I had in the US was a 750. The bike had plenty of weight and speed for highway driving. Heck, my car here is only 900 cc and it goes plenty fast for Thailand. Don't see a reason for a bike over 450cc to 500cc here in Thailand.

My last bike in the UK was 1100cc.

You cannot utilize the maximum speeds of these bikes safely on the roads. It's simply too dangerous.

So why bother putting them there in the first place? These things are not being used for getting around, they are for people testing the limits of their daredevil proclivities.

Valid point - and the same can be argued of cars.

I don't need a car that does 0-100kmh in 6 seconds - but our car does.

I don't need a car that does 188 kmh - but our car does.

The reality is I can do 120 kmh on my scooter down Sukhumvit rd if I wanted to - it just takes 9 seconds to get there instead of 3.2 seconds - I'd likely wipe out, but exceeding safe speeds is already easy enough on a scooter - fools will always ride / drive dangerously.

The issue here - IMO - is not the actual bikes - but the level of experience and mentality of the riders these machines are being rented out to [and I'm still guessing this was a rental].

But cars are forced to stay in lanes at least. Cars are more restricted. Motorbikes are constantly cutting in and out of lanes and going around cars. And cars may harm other people, but at least you are a lot safer in a car.

And I saw a guy driving around in a topless Jeep. Looks really cool. He's not going fast at all. It's the complete opposite. He clearly drives this thing to cruise around and to be able to absorb the surroundings.

There's no need for racing on the roads. Slow driving is more enjoyable anyway. Are people watching too many action movies or what?

Because horsepower is a gimmick to sell cars. It's a scam.

What is a "sports car"? Has to have high horsepower or no one will buy it.

But Formula 1 drivers are on a track, not in traffic.

There is no such thing as a "sports car". Driving in traffic is not a sport. Or shouldn't be.

Apart from those autobahns in Germany where there is no speed limit, maybe.

It's much more fun to drive a slow car or motorcycle fast than to wrap yourself around a tree in a high-HP vehicle.  It's easy to break traction in a high-horsepower vehicle.

Ours is not a sports car - far from it...

Its a bog-standard family SUV.

Valid point on the Autobahn - but is that why cars can do 185 kmh ?? - as you point out, its just about sales & marketing and there's really no need for a car that does 0-100 kmh in 6 seconds and 185 kmh.

That said - its quite nice being able to squeeze the throttle to ease out into the next lane on the expressway - but - its safer being able to 'get up to speed' with the other traffic more quickly.

My theory is that many of these accidents are caused by a foreigner looking the wrong way. They forget that Thailand drives on the left.

Sick of these guys riding these bikes.

Hate with so much passion. Do they actually think they look good, or just want some attention ? It's a bike, not a Ferrari.

Some people like to show off, thinking they'll be impressing the other drivers, but it only works for the teen crowds, who haven't the amount of road experience the middle aged or higher crowd does, and who know more about what happens when a person is hit at high speeds.

A lot love speed, and going fast with no one around is thrilling at any age, but everyone has their own personal limitations, and if someone cuts in front of you and you don't know how to avoid them, an accident will happen. but of course you aren't allowed to exceed the speed limit so most cars go faster than needed anyway.

Like another mentioned, getting up to speed is a good thing, and sometime is a safer option than trying to merge into traffic going slow.

I'm sure most of us would love to try the Bonneville Salt Flats at least once in our lives but you can't do that on the roads.

In Thailand, where many are inexperienced or plain incompetent, you aren't only worrying about your own ability, but of all the others around you. I've never been more aware or observant than while driving here, and am much more relaxed when I'm back home in Texas. I've been cut off almost every time I've driven here and one cut in front of my scooter from a dead stop without looking and I had nowhere to go but right into him. Luckily I braked enough before impact and only damaged the front fork of my scooter.

The younger crowd loves speed and the roar of the engines, and that's part of being young. The problem is many die every day because of this, along with many more accidents non fatal. And many of them are too young to legally drive and are without helmets here.

I live 100 metres from Naklua Road, I hear these morons on motor bikes going past every night particularly around 2 am. The roar of the bikes suggests that they are going flat chat. I don't care if they kill themselves but as usual innocent people are involved.
