I've read a few stories about bus drivers reading the newspaper while driving......in the US.  20 years ago, I believe there were TV shows that featured a husband engrossed in his paper while ignoring his wife telling him something.

Get over it.......it's a Sign of the Times......and it'll pass.  There's really nothing you can do about it, anyway.

For now. There is no end to corporations greed.

One hand you have corporate greed and on the other socialism/communism greed in other words humans are greedy.  There are corporate exceptions.   I don't know of any governmental exceptions.  Competition drives Netflix and the absence of ads and the Netflix price point.  If they get too expensive in a capitalistic marketplace they will be replaced.

Well gramps, 1.

1.  Can you video chat with your children on bus 9000 miles away during a hurricane?  (did that today).

Never had a desire to do so, and the human race survived hurricanes for millennia without chatting to each other about it

2.  Can you watch live Thai dancing girls while they attend college classes while you poop?  (did that today)

Your machine is contaminated with bad bacteria and will make you sick.

3.  Does your computer read you recipes while you cook in the kitchen?

I can read a recipe while cooking

Can you write an article for a newspaper while you walk the dog?

Are you the guy that walked into me because he wasn't looking where he was going?

4.  Can you describe a technical process to a computer tech in a foreign language in a computer repair shop in Thailand?

If I had to get one fixed, I'd take it somewhere they know what they are doing without me having to do their job for them.

  5.  Purchased plumbing supplies, spices, vegetables, computer parts and countless other items by showing the Thai clerk a photo from my Note 4 screen and used it to translate both in script and voice.

Never had the need to. I prefer seeing what I'm buying before I pay.

7.  Can you take all of your immigration documents (20 years worth) with you to immigration?

If I had to, yes. They were doing that before the pesky machines were invented

  8.  Can you check all of your doctors advice, prescriptions

I can use google with my big computer

and have all of your medical records available on your phone when you go to the hospital?

Any Dr that assumed medical records on a patient's phone was trustworthy would probably be struck off.

. 9. Do you carry a barometer in your pocket to check the weather?

That's clutching at straws! I've never bothered to check the weather other than looking out the window.

  10. Do you have a personal assistant who gives you driving instructions at night?  (turn right 100 feet, turn left 200 feet).  I can look at my screen or my phone can talk to me.

The internet is full of tales of people guided into unpassable places. I like a map

I have a small Startrek like badge that I can tap to talk to or make calls or use my personal assistant or when on out or riding a motorcycle I have an earpiece and speaker that takes instructions and filters out noise traffic and wind noise (Plantronics Voyager 5200).

No doubt you will be first in line to get the chip implanted into your brain :sorry:

I also have a 34 inch monitor for gaming and a laptop and a tablet.

I stopped gaming when I realised I was an addict. Unfortunately, I'm addicted to forums, so not much better off. If we are honest, it's all a waste of time.

I have 3 tvs, 3 laptops and a tablet. They don't improve my life, unfortunately.

My phone is integrated with my life making it much easier and more efficient and more fun.

The only thing I like about my mobile phone is not having it with me. I only have one for emergencies.

Having lived most of my life without needing a machine to tell me what to do, I can get on fine without one.

Those that are dependent on the machine better hope a sun flare doesn't wipe them all out.

U tube never used to have ads. They don't seem in any trouble despite now being infested with the things.

Pure communism/ socialism isn't greedy- the opposite. Unfortunately there has never been real communism/ socialism and the people that run it are corrupt.

Nearest thing to it was probably the Kibbutz system.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kibbutz

Kibbutzim began as utopian communities, a combination of socialism ...........................

Good for you dude ! But I don't need ANY of the things you describe in your post. ( except for the 34 inch monitor ).

My grandfather also used a straight razor, shaving cup and brush and strop and everything.  He got a good close shave no denying that.  But.  The straight razor is almost completely gone from common use today.  Same thing will happen to all but smartphones.  You'll have a smartphone soon.  It's inevitable.  Just like the automobile replaced the horse.

The straight razor disappeared as they were dangerous.

You may be right about inevitability of owning a sheeple phone. The giant corporations will have a licence to print money once everyone is forced to have one. The cashless society will follow, and everyone will be owned by the banks. People should be careful what they wish for.

Seriously, I hope I'm dead before that happens. I have no wish to be owned by a corporation.

BTW, lots of horses around still.

My grandfather was an illiterate Irish farmer and said the same thing about automobiles.  I really don't think it is something to brag about.  It is like telling people that you don't bath daily.  Not bathing daily was acceptable years ago but as technology advanced the benefits of hygiene in most countries became the norm.

Universal car ownership has only been available for a very short time in human existence.

While cars have made life better for most, they have become a pestilential plague in cities. Instead of making people's lives better, they kill millions of us and are probably largely responsible for global warming.

Better public transport would probably have been better for all of us.

Your grandfather was probably on the right track.

I still shave with a straight razor if I'm not in a hurry.  My grandfather taught me how. I have found 2 barbers that finish with a straight razor(disposable)  Sometimes i treat myself to a straight razor shave before a hot date...

I don't have to look at my phone or even touch it to interact with it.  The little thing below reacts to my voice and connects to my computer in the phone and will do anything I want.  I can send a message or write a letter or ask for information without having to look up from what I'm doing (cooking) or where I'm going).  My doctor is computer and smart phone literate and we communicate by phone and computer when in his office.  All my records and tests are in his phone and computer because that's how he conducts exams and records the information also he interacts with my other 3 doctors and labs at the hospital at the same time. Many new phone apps are about medical problems.  The doctor even checks my health/exercise programs and pulse history from my phone.

Even in WWII gunners used machines to sight opposing battleships and sink them.  We would not have won WWII without machines telling us what to do.  My phone connects me to the cameras and alarm system placed in and around my home to keep it secure when I'm out.  I even talk to my dogs when I'm away to let them know they are not alone.  If anyone breeches my house or grounds I'm immediately notified by smart phone and video and I dispatch my personal security force to deal with the problem of course the intruders are recorded and the video sent to the web.  If they cut my power I have a battery backup.

I'm a sailor and have used a barometer all my life and machines to tell me where to go.  Even a sextant and a slide rule fit the definition of machines so quite old actually.

My daughter has lost power and her water has been cut off but she is OK.  It's nice to know and see her face and the house and exterior conditions even though I'm in Thailand and she is in Florida.

You missed my point about the food stuffs and new computer hardware.  I show the clerk a photo and Thai name of what I want  I always have this information because I always have a smartphone.   I recently bought a new high speed graphics card so I can play 4k games.  The visuals are awesome they look just like a movie but are an interactive computer program.  I recently converted my workstation into a gaming computer saving 30,000 baht and still getting 60 fps and great resolution.

Fair enough.

My opposition to "smart" phones is that it is breeding a race of machine zombies. When it all goes wrong, and EVERYTHING goes wrong eventually, millions will die because they can't function without their machine.

However, the MAIN reason I oppose them is that they will enable EVIL people to control us. Once the cashless society comes in the corporations will own every human being on the planet. Does ANYONE think that will be a "good thing"?

Does a rational, sane person actually WANT a chip in their brain?

Do you know how difficult it is to play a contemporary game (The Wicher) and set up/build  a computer to do that well and talk to your GF on a video call while checking forex trades?  It is harder to play a current complex computer game well than it was to fly a WWII fighter aircraft in the Battle of Britain.  Far from creating zombies it is creating brilliant coordinated young kids.

Your argument can also be applied to pacemakers but should we not implant them because they are machines?  Should we not use computer assisted medical devices because they are machines?  Should we try and land aircraft manually again because a mechanical system might fail?  I'm afraid we are already where you are afraid to go and have been there for quite some time.  I can't get my SS check in cash anymore and I pay my bills with my smartphone.  I'm not panicked.

I'm sure you have seen a WW2 gun sight. Not a silicone chip anywhere.

Back then, "computers" were people that did calculations.

Even dropping bombs involved a human using a mechanical device to calculate air speed, height, weight of bomb etc. No silicone chip anywhere.

I know the Americans and British think they won the European war, but WW2 in Europe was won because Hitler was insane and Stalin was prepared to sacrifice millions to fight the Germans.  However, Colossus certainly saved Britain and thousands of sailors lives, and without R. J. Mitchell's Spitfire, Germany would have won the Battle of Britain.

BTW, the first men on the moon got there using computers with ( probably ) the calculating power of a modern washing machine.

My point is that we don't need "smart" phones to live our lives, and the downside to come, will, IMO, be terrible.

OK.

Next time some phone zombie bounces off me because s/he wasn't looking where they were going, or they kill someone driving a car while using a zombie phone I'm sure they can comfort themselves with the knowledge they are smarter than fighter pilots.

However, the thread is about whether using the phones to the point of oblivion in public is dumb, not about what can be done with them, but I guess we've all got off topic.

The benefits of medical devices is another thread.

BTW, I was paid direct into my bank account way back before any of us had a mobile phone, never mind a personal computer. We used pieces of paper and circular pieces of metal called money to get what we wanted. We survived without a phone in our pocket, and for myself at least, life was waaaaaay better than now.

No you are wrong.  People did not do the computation work for the Norden bomb sight.  The Norden used a mechanical computer inside the bombsight to calculate the range angle of the bombs. By simply dialing in the aircraft's altitude and heading, along with estimates of the wind speed and direction (in relation to the aircraft), the computer would automatically, and quickly, calculate the aim point. This not only reduced the time needed for the bombsight setup but also dramatically reduced the chance for error.

Smart phones or computer chips inside heart pacemakers. what's the difference.  The point is we do need them to live.  You however are not aware of all of the uses of computers as you were not aware of the use of computers to sight weapons during WWII.

A female patient suffering from leukaemia had been baffling medical professionals from Japan after treatment and all previous treatment being prescribed for the condition was proving ineffective.  IBM's Watson machine spent just ten minutes studying the patient's medical information and was able to cross-reference her condition against 20 million oncological records, It discovered the patient actually had a varying form of leukaemia.

Why am I so high tech?  Why build computers and redesign smart phones at my age?  It may prevent me from getting Alzheimer.  It keeps my mind active.

Given you had the money. If you had a heart attack and needed a computer assisted heart implant would you get it?  If a computer nano implant could cure your cancer would you use it?

I got a deposit bank account to receive my pension check in Thailand as it was the only way for me to get the money.  When you get old a smart phone may be the only way to get your retirement funds.  Would you get one?

You misunderstand what I meant. What I described for bomb aimers was indeed a mechanical computer, but it was a far cry from the zombie phone computer.

No one, ever, ran into someone in public because they were looking at a bomb sight instead of where they were going.

I was referring to human computers.

http://www.history.com/news/human-computers-women-at-nasa

They were known as “human computers” long before desktop, laptops and multi-function calculators.

Like I said, medical devices etc is too far off topic for me to respond to that on here.

Maybe in 10 years , we might be forced to pay with a device like a "smartphone" or a dedicated other device for paying . Hope to be pushing up daisies by then .

amvet ! We are talking about smartphones not computers , look at the OP .

Receiving retirement funds are so far away for me , so I don't have to think about it !

Not off topic at all, it proves you horribly in error.  The next revolutionary medical instrument? Your smartphone.

This very technology that allows us to keep up with the Kardashians also makes our smartphones unparalleled medical devices. So, for example, a startup called Tissue Analytics lets you take pictures of a wound over time on your smartphone, allowing doctors to determine whether it's healing or festering. AliveCor lets you capture an electrocardiogram at home and alerts doctors if something is wrong with your heart. Netra Labs lets you take eye tests at home using mobile technology.

Cash used to be king.  One would have been rational to say you would never need a bank account to receive your own pension fund.  But now you can't get it in cash.  Can you rent a car without a credit card?  Well the smart phone may well replace your credit card ergo you may need one to draw your pension.

No reason to look at the phone if you have half a brain.  Get an earpiece and listen and talk to your phone.  Smart use of a smart appliance.  You could also kill yourself with a frying pan but it didn't stop people from cooking in a pan instead on a stick over a fire.

Cash is still king for me and certainly here in Thailand. I have a car ( paid in cash ) , no need to rent.

I have no credit nor debit card either....
