NLA chief expects election in Nov-Dec next year

NLA President Pornpetch.

The next general election could be expected late next year around November-December, National Legislative Assembly (NLA) President Pornpetch Vichitcholchai said on Thursday.

That tentative time frame seemed to push back the recent estimation by the Election Commission (EC) of an election in August next year. But Pornpetch insisted it followed the normal timeframe.

There were some processes that people did not take into account, Pornpetch explained.

In passing each organic law in three readings, the NLA had 60 days, he said. But after endorsing the bill in the third reading, the president had five days before forwarding it to the prime minister. And then the PM also has to have some time to process it before seeking royal endorsement, Pornpetch said.

“All these steps must be counted. The EC’s calculation may not have included all these details,” the NLA president said.

The NLA has covered more than half the way, he said. Currently, the assembly was deliberating on the organic law governing the Ombudsman, he added.

Another bill in the NLA’s hand is the one on the human rights commission, he said. The bill was being discussed by a joint committee after the National Human Rights Commission disagreed with some points and it would enter the NLA’s meeting soon, he added.

"The next general election could be expected late next year ... ", he said.

He's the President of The National Legislative Assembly (NLA)  --  I was expecting something with a little bit more "certainty".

Because if he *isn't* certain ... then what's the point of saying *anything* ?

Expected!!!!!!! What does that mean?? I will never believe it till it happens. The General 44 is making the most of his tenure and will keep it as long as he can to the detriment of the country. I'm doing well, Jack abd the Army is increasing and getting new toys - lets keep it going. Its sickening!!!!!!!

All the talks and speculation about the date of the next general election are premature, Meechai says

Crap. (Not the above post.) All that flapdoodle about deliberating legislation by a rubber stamp assembly when the result for the junta would be the usual Unanimous-but-with-3-abstentions.

Still, with elections which will be as meaningless as planned, it scarcely matters anyway.

He was just trying to see who would get excited when he said this. "There will be An election in Nov/Dec next year" Anybody excited about that? But first we must wait till the army controls everything like the media This is a bit Like Robert Mugabe Everybody  hates him there and he is a dictator and the country is going backwards but he still wins. There will be no elections

RED FOR DANGER AND DISORDER from the National Council for Peace and Order

Why don't Junta spokespersons - 2 in this case - ever realise what complete idiots they're making of themselves and the chaotic and often contradictory framework within which they make their absurd promises and forecasts?

They've got the Election Commission (EC) , which, to me, sounds like it is supposed to have its finger on the pulse of what is happening, election-wise, making what sounded like a strong forecast for an August election and, within a week, Pornpatch - he who clearly wants his grand-sounding NLA to get in on the act - sees fit to rubbish the EC position by knocking the election date back by another 3 or 4 months  And therein lies the danger - the disease, in fact - that is already rendering the NCPO virtually incapable of doing or saying anything that can be relied upon, anything that can be found to carry at least a grain of truth. Now, after three-and-a-half years of delays, Pornpatch cannot do better than say 'around November-December'. Lets face it, he and his posh-suited chums are pretty good at messing everyone around. And, they just don't seem to give a shit about the mess they're serving up.

We've known, since the referendum of last August, that the next government will be an army-reinforced dictatorship that, for face-saving reasons alone, is trying to look like a democracy . . . why the hell don't they just pull their collective fingers out of the mish-mash mix-up of their 'organisation' and set the so-called election for next week or for whenever they can organise the printing of the ballot papers?

I really do worry for Thailand . . . it is too good a country for the insultingly bad performance from the present men at the top. OK, rant over. :post-4641-1156694005:

Well, if there is another short delay it's January 2019:sad:. I beginning to get the junta interpretation of 'general election', it really means 'General election' and since the present General doesn't feel like retiring yet no election for the next General, Ha!
