Belgian mayor's throat slashed in cemetery, shocking country

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The murder of a Belgian city mayor whose throat was cut in a cemetery on Monday has shocked the country, and the country's prime minister expressed "horror" at the death of the retired national lawmaker.

Citing the public prosecutor, Belgian media said Alfred Gadenne, 71, the conservative mayor of Mouscron, an industrial town of 57,000 just across the border from the northern French city of Lille, was found dead in a graveyard close to his home where he acted as caretaker and locked the gates each night.

Local news service SudInfo, citing unnamed sources, said a suspect had handed himself in to police and that the motive was unclear. The case was handed to a local prosecutor rather than to national counter-terrorism investigators.

"I have learned with horror of the brutal death of Alfred Gadenne," Prime Minister Charles Michel, a liberal, said on Twitter. "All my thoughts are with his family and friends."

Among the many others offering condolences was Martine Aubry, the former French Socialist party leader and long-time mayor of metropolitan Lille.

Philippe Courard, president of the parliament for Belgium's French-speaking south, tweeted: "Terrifying. What kind of world are we living in?"

Answer, A world where your murderer has been caught, handed himself in even, and yet cannot be named, is a world that is not serious about tackling violent/ideologist crime. Yet another senseless death, and usual lackluster response by authorities.

edit to add, this was not the only violent assault in a Christian religious site yesterday, there was also a knife rampage in a church in Birmingham UK with several victims suffering stab wounds and another un-named perp. The bold and brave will notice a pattern among these crimes.

The alleged attacker in Birmingham has been now been charged, identified as John Delahaye. I would assume the person who handed himself in Belgium will also be named after being formally charged. Members such as you who constantly post alleged conspiracies, even in the immediate aftermath of a murder, really need to get a life.

Yes. Where criminals go unpunished, illegal immigrants and unknown migrants go undocumented and where the lazy, criminal and feckless are encouraged to live and breed at the tax payers expense. Discipline and responsibility needs to start young. Too many years of soft liberal PC policies.

Would it make any difference if it were a Buddhist religious site? I mean, murder always has to be done at a particular location. What was it about the grave yard that is salient in this case? The fact that there are dead people burried there, that there might be a ghost story or two associated with the place or that it is currently or once was a Christian burial site?

It reminded me immediately of poor Jacques Hamel the 84 yr old French priest who was all but beheaded in his church. Multiple threats have been issued that attacks will be carried out in churches. Cemetaries are often next to churches, and the old mayor closing would have looked like a clergyman. If this is the case, then yes it is very much different from a crime of passion or a robbery. Buddhists would also be a target, so no difference if it was a Buddhist site. Let's wait for more info, or wait and see if the attackers identity continues to be held secret - which speaks volumes.

When everyone is like sheep and cant defend themselves, the wolves will dominate and do what ever they like.

Just keep walking around and say bah bah, pathetic.

The victim was 71! He shouldn't have to rely on being able to defend himself at that age. But, as we see more and more, the so called first world civilized countries are failing to protect their citizens whilst removing the rights of their citizens to defend themselves and facilitating those responsible for the attacks.

In a world where everything turns around the " golden calf " ( bible ) , the money .

Money leads to greed . greed leads to destruction , destruction to hate ( crimes ) .

Yeah,  that's right only those from the third world commit savage murder. Just like the two Australian white teenage girls who recently stabbed to death an elderly man in his home in order to steal. There are of course numerous other examples of brutal murder in the so called first world by other 'white' non Muslim citizens.

I believe at this stage the murderer in the OP has not been identified as a foreigner, refugee or a Muslim, yet the assumptive loathing and conspiracy theories pour out of certain members.

RIP to the victim.

Well it looks like the murderer was a young Belgian native aged 18yrs, and acted out of vengence for his deceased father and blamed the mayor for his fathers death, or something similar. No idea why authorities were acting all coy in this situation. They must understand after the 2015 Cologne Silvester night mass rape described as a "peaceful evening" and the many many other terror attacks downplayed and outright dismissed that the public would be (rightly IMO) skeptical when these suspicious murders occur. If the media/authorities acted honestly there would be no cynical reaction from the public.

Clearly it was their fault and the fault of the English authorities in that other case that you came to your carefully considered and reasoned conclusion. It's shocking that they aren't familiar with that universal principle of jurisprudence: Muslim until stated otherwise.

He had just one idea—but, that one being "Snark,"

A very sad post reflecting on your attitude, but blaming media and authorities.
