Need advice on old Pattaya Jeep

Featured Replies

I have owned my jeep for six years now. Have blue book in my name, but vehicle is registered in Rayong.

Engine died two months ago so had replacement engine fitted. I have the correct paperwork for the change.

So off to Hwy 36 for tax and engine change. Totally refused!

Reason was the number on the jeep chassis did not match the book. BUT there is a plate in the engine bay which matches the book. Btw the chassis is Toyota so he said.

After seven years tax and insurance I am at a loss how to proceed.

I would welcome any advice from forum members. Thank you in advance.

you mean a LandCruiser/ FJ Cruiser?

I've seen filipinos fabricating 'Jeep' copies, but did that happen in LOS too? - right down to the 7grill

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

The Jeep is a cj6 built on a Toyota chassis. There used to be many around town but dont see many now.

Can i ask when you bought the jeep was you present at rayong when you did name change? I ask beacuse they must have veryfied the chassis number there to tbe blue book.

I just bought the Jeep from a local farang. He used an agent I believe. I did nothing other than provide the usual passport copies and resident certificate (plus the cash).

As I already stated I have seven years of tax until now when I had to change the engine. I have all the correct papers for the engine change.

The blue book even states that the chassis number is on a manufacturers plate in the engine bay bulkhead.

It appears that the Thai law regarding vehicles has changed.

So....where do I go from here?

Any suggestions would be welcome. I have been told that the paperwork will need to be done in Bangkok.

All very confusing for an old farang.

I am guessing lots of tea money will need to be paid. Perhaps better I just drive the Jeep and pay the occasional fine for no tax.

Every year when you pay tax and have your vehicle safety tested(standard)they will make a pencil print of your framenumber to check if it matches the number in the book.If they have been doing it for seven years and did not find a fault then it is strange they notice it now.

I do not know if your insurance is valid if you do not pay tax, anyone know?

I would go back to the people who installed your engine and ask if they can help you.

Lots of small lawyer offices around who probably could help you.

Moved to Pattaya Forum someone there might know what to do

There lies the problem. The chassis is that of a Toyota. There is a number but not in the book. But I have taxed it for seven years without problem...only now when I have the new engine installed does the problem arise.

The book even has a note under the chassis number in the book to use the number on the engine bulkhead.

However, I have now got the problem resolved. Those who live here will know how I got the desired result.

Thanks to all for your help.

In the real Jeep community, these vehicles are referred to as Frankenjeeps. Just a collection of parts on a Toyota or Suzuki frame, most likely with a used Toyota 4 cly diesel engine installed. No longer 4WD as nothing will fit/match up. The body tub/shell is readily available from the PI. The whole thing seems to be a problem waiting to happen.

I actually saw a real Jeep for sale locally last year. It was imported for the Thai gvt (not military) back in 1969 or 70. Original engine still intact & ran great - still 4WD. WAY to expensive (280,000 Bt) but after about 10 months somebody finally bought it.

For gods sake don't go to a lawyer office as yet another poorly informed poster suggested.

PM me for a service that can help you out.  She is a well informed lady who is familiar with car and motorcycle issues and her office is located near Central Mall Pattaya.
