snoop1130 Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Beefy monk wows internet - sparks debate about obese and sick clergy Pictures of a hunky body building monk were posted online along with comments to encourage the clergy to eat better and get fit. The unnamed monk looked like he had exchanged chanting for pumping iron though no one was suggesting the laity had slipped him some steroids in his morning alms bowl. A commentary on the "Piak Rider and Drama Addict" page online said that no one expected other monks to be so well developed beneath the robes. But something needs to be done to encourage the clergy to take better care of themselves. A medical survey found recently that the monkhood suffers greatly from diabetes, obesity, high fat levels in the blood and kidney disease. The post also called on the public who provide their food to think about healthier options. Alms givers gave the monks too many sweets, too much fat laden food and too much salt in their diet. The public need to play their part too and encourage the porky Phras to indulge in more venerable veg. Source: https://www.thairath.co.th/content/1074519 -- © Copyright Thai Visa News 2017-9-19

I mean what's up with those orange robes, they are so yesterday.
Thunder26 Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Agreed that most of the food people give to monks is really bad for health. As it was mentioned in the article people give way too many extremely sweet desserts or extremely salty fish that was fried in awfully bad oil.
Cadbury Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Steroids and amulets make a great tag team. The new wave Buddhism.... expect more of it.

seahorse Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Lifting weights is similar to meditation in many ways.
nausea Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 (edited) Actually, this is a very old problem with Buddhist monks: "Buddhidharma (5th-6th c. AD) soon saw that the weak physical state that the monks were in (because they neglected their bodies to be pious and humble), would make long periods of meditation impossible." (Somewhere on The Net) Buddhidharma initiated an early system of calisthenics which eventually developed into the Shaolin Boxing we know today. Of course, whether today's problems are due to monks neglecting their bodies to be 'pious and humble' is a little debateable (555). PS You can 't write "kung <deleted>" cos the bl**dy "<deleted>" gets f****ing deleted. Edited September 19, 2017 by nausea More info.
lamyai3 Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 I'd have gone for hunky monk in the headline and beefy monk in the opening paragraph instead.

LotusBoy Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 I bet that right arm has seen a lot of action in the monk-hood. Come to think of it, his jaw line looks pretty strong as well.

rkidlad Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 More selfies, please. Maybe also a blog about his workout routine, his favourite food and how does he remain single.

Yes you can suggest it but something like his body is obtainable without steroids. Just a lot of hard work, but its easier to say steroids because that would diminish his effort in your eyes and make you feel better about not doing anything about your shape yourself. Of course you need a few good genes too.. not everyone gains muscles at the same rate.
Rimbuman Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 When I donate I like to give mainly fruit and home cooked food.

seabear Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Maybe a cooking book "Healthy food for healthy monks" would be a good idea. Or the monks could distribute a wish list for next days lunch.
RichardColeman Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Well, if he wants to spend his off-time working out then good luck to him, body is a temple and all that - a lot of the others seems to spend their time shopping, on their mobiles or computer, smoking hash, taking drugs or having sex with tin cans !
mettech Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 a lot of them are fake trying to evade prison sentences.

maximillian Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Christian monks in their monasteries in Europe are producing their own food (and beer). They often have big gardens able to produce more than enough to nourish them the whole year. Thai Temples often have many rai of land and a very favourable climate. They could easily take care of themselves instead taking alms. But then, many people couldn't make merit...

I also have no desire to look like the Michelin Man, not everyone thinks it looks good.

Steroids are not part of meditation, nor are they part of Buddhism. He is not doing it for health, which he will ruin using steroids, he is doing it for his ego, contrary to Buddhism. He is a bad role model. He will die by the time he's 50 from steroid use

With that said even if he did take steroids he'd have a longer life expectancy than somebody like you holding excess visceral fat in that bloated saggy gut. 12 hours ago, Cadbury said: Steroids and amulets make a great tag team. Anybody not looking weak and fat like you must clearly be cheating.....right..... 4 hours ago, Thaiwrath said: Can I be the first to suggest they have probably played a part, although, probably not donated by the laity ? How probable and based on what evidence exactly? 2 hours ago, dinsdale said: Looks like they can add steroid abuse to the list. Here's a guy who not only doesn't take steroids, he doesn't even eat meat, dairy or eggs. Wrap your head around that genuis. Just because you're too lazy to spend 30 minutes out of every day taking care of your body and eating properly doesn't automatically mean everybody who looks good is on steroids. It's pathetic.
