Ranger from South, two friends arrested over Bangkok shooting death

By The Nation

Bangkok police arrested a ranger on leave from the deep South after he allegedly shot dead a man and injured another on a Bangkok street. The ranger told police he was acting in self defence.

Sergeant Apisak Srikham, 34, a ranger from Narathiwat’s Joh I Rong district, and two other men were arrested at their house on Soi Charansanitwong 41 in Bangkok’s Bangkok Noi district at 2am.

Police alleged that Apisak shot dead Sitthinon Khiewsod, 20, and injured Prawut Panthong, 27 with his service pistol.

Apisak said he did not know that he had killed or injured anyone, but admitted to firing his gun in self-defence. He said a group of road racers attacked him and his friends following a dispute late on Sunday night.

Apisak said he and two friends – Supoj Sritrairasi, 50 and Thanakorn Nualsiew, 29 – were walking on Soi Charansanitwong 41 to fish at a bridge over Bangkok Noi canal at 11.30pm when the slain teenager and three friends raced their car and motorcycles into the soi.

Apisak said the group of racers almost drove into him and his friends, which led to a verbal dispute with the group. The ranger said the group later returned with iron pipes to attack him and his friends.

The ranger said he was hit on the head and so he fired five shots in self defence.

Supoj and Thanakorn were arrested along with the ranger.

Police said the ranger is the legal owner of the pistol involved in the incident, but he was charged with carrying it in public without justification because he was on leave.

If I was attacked by a group with iron pipes I would shoot also, given the opportunity.
