Whopping dowry as six year old twins tie the knot in Trang

A pair of six year old twins married in Trang yesterday according to ancient customs.

Groom Kittikawin and his slightly younger bride Kawinthida were declared cuter than cute by the mass gathering of relatives, friends, neighbors and reporters in Muang district of the southern Thai town.

The dowry was the auspicious all the nines - 999,999 baht - and there was also nine baht weight in gold laid out for the nuptials worth about 180,000 baht at today's prices.

Thais often have their twins marry each other in such ceremonies to ensure long life and happiness. It is also believed that twins who marry will love each other and not abandon one another.

Furthermore, it helps the adults in the family feel better about things as twins have the possibility of bringing some dodgy karma with them to this life.

Kittikawin was very excited and happy saying that he had to get up at 5am to prepare everything.

"But the most exciting thing was that we were on TV," he said. He said that now he has grown up a bit he loves his sister.

The groom gave an example of his singing prowess singing a total of seven minutes for the adoring guests.

They are twins. Even if it is only a ritual, today morals says that it´s outdated and almost perverted.
However, we can see this as a ritual for luck, even if it sounds very stupid.

After that it´s the "wopping dowry"??? That all is about money, that is something that is flooding the country since the beginning of time.
Though, it must be both stupid and easy to take money and put in a dowry that you sort of are giving yourself.

Maybe a good doctor can fix the problem in this case. What do I know. I am just a farang. "Chan mai kaowchai"

But it's soo cute, the mum has the same dress as the daughter! And now she's married to her brother, and make many babies...isn't that cute?

Superstitious Idiots

Since they are twins and therefore have the same parents, who gets this ‘massive dowry’?

This header seems to reappear in Thaivisa frequently.

Hooking up with your sister's best friend takes on a new meaning now. Man I would hate to be that family around the Thanksgiving table.

My TGF is from that area and she tells me its quite common for boy/girl twins from wealthy families to do this, crazy for us to understand yes, supposed to bring good luck and a long life.....boy/boy and girl/girl twins does not count.

This is Thailand.............:whistling:

Up until 5 years ago I had a Chinese-Thai friend who was a director of a large engineering company. I also met and knew quite a few of the family particularly a son in law, who like me, was a martial artist. In that family there were children with serious health problems due to 'in-breeding'. Children are selected at an early age to be betrothed. This keeps the family fortune within the family. I wonder if that is the (practical) reason in this news item. However, it is also true to say that because of wider communications these days, there also appear to be increasing numbers of children going against parents wishes so perhaps in the not too distant future it may only happen to a minority.

Nice family fortune: serious health problems thanks to incest!

I hope this is just a badly written article.

If this is a cultural thing, it needs some explaining to people without knowledge of how this "marriage" works.

In the west not only would this be illegal, immoral and downright unacceptable the parents would be slung in jail and the kids sent into care.

Is this a Buddhist ceremony?

:omfg:

Relax everybody .

It isnt a legal marriage, just a ceremony

Thai traditional customs are that when twins are born, a male and a female , the belief is that they were a couple in a previous life and they both died at the same time and they pleaded with the Gods to reincarnate them as twins in the next life , so that they could be together .

Thais perform this ceremony because their "belief" is that if the kids dont get married , the Gods will get angry and kill one of them .

Dont worry , they wont consummate the marriage and they will grow up and get married properly to other people .

Yes, and of course it isn't necessarily the oldest that inherit as they may be in poor health and perhaps have a shorter lifespan. There is also an 'incentive' not to divorce but I never found out what that was. Believe me, I felt very sad sometimes trying to communicate with afflicted children.

Thanks for that - there are some feeble minded people who post here at times. Too lazy to do any research and possibly never been to Thailand.

If they are concerned about this traditional ceremony wait until they find out that (not too long ago ) the Khmer people used to kill one of the two twins at birth for their own cultural beliefs

And I guess a lot of posters front up to church every sunday and think they are eating the body of Christ and drinking his blood and then have the nerve to knock other peoples beliefs and traditions.

Interesting from a cultural perspective.

Child abuse Thai style, if any further proof were needed that not all cultures are equal this is it.

Those gods really are so smart and all knowing. They allow this 'couple' to come back as 'twins'. Catch 22 - you're brother and sister and you have to get married or we will be mad! (at two 6 year olds) So they get fake married and the gods are appeased. They grow up and go their own way. They marry people who aren't family (hopefully). The gods don't know because........reasons. But let's not get bogged down with common sense; that's disrespectful to their 'beliefs'.

So before you all criticize, know why some people do this. Find out the reasons why before you judge. And when you know why, you can quite rightly say, "Yea, I didn't need to know that to confirm it was stupid".

How did we go from a harmless, traditional ceremony to bring luck to the family to deciding this was the cause of incest among folks?!  The article should do more to explain the cultural issues behind the ceremony, but it certainly isn't pushing or encouraging incest.

Well, for a start , if this was not an intended true marriage then it can't claim to follow the traditional rules (which might change from place to place). I was married to my ex via a traditional Thai ceremony before going to the registry office. Certain rituals can only be performed if the intent is sincere etc etc. If those rituals are performed then the two people are betrothed. If they are not performed, say as just example of a ceremony, then the couple are not considered betrothed.

My twins were married in a similar ceremony. The belief is that in a previous life they were boyfriend girlfriend but died before they could be wed. The ceremony is to ensure it never happens again.
