Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha yesterday (September 29) officially launched a public internet project and the undersea cable development project in Pak Bara district of Satun province.

The undersea cable development project linking Asia with Africa and Europe or Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE-1) which is undertaken by TOT Plc will help Thailand achieve its goal to becoming the ASEAN Digital Hub in accordance with its Thailand 4.0 master plan which it hopes to achieve within 20 years.

The cable system which the TOT Plc has jointly invested with 17 leading global communication companies is the first high capacity system that runs past Thailand at Songhkla and Satun provinces.

Then he will put in the single gateway and have full control like the Chinese who stop their citizens viewing anything the man at the top does not like.

Live with it or leave.

Now we have a time frame. Thailand ASEAN Digital Hub, and Thailand 4.0 within 40 years!

Well I think the General is being economic with the truth. China initiated this project in 2011 and the link through Thailand is for Cambodia, Vietnam and Hong Kong. Mainland China will link in through Myanmar.

"which is undertaken by TOT Plc"  and yet  "TOT Plc has jointly invested with 17 leading global communication companies"  would seem to be attributing more of the credit to Thailand than is actually the case ? :whistling:

Need to stoke the nationalistic flame. Some countries are a lot more nationalistic then others. Singing to flags ect clear signs of an an overly nationalistic country (in my eyes). I am happy that where I come from we did not have to salute the flag or have it at football games and stuff. I think it can actually a bad thing to be too nationalistic.

Cambodia has two cables off shore now and sells bandwidth to Laos if not mistaken.  They also had 4G before Thailand.  Glad to see Thailand catch up with its neighbors.

You are quite correct. Yet another example of the PM's enormous ego taking control. He just can't help himself from big-noting and hoping the gullible will believe he created it all as part of Thailand 4.0.

Indeed. I believe from memory it was about 20 years ago that Thailand decided not to invest in a cable that was going past its shores as it saw no need for high capacity. This was the time that the Minister for Communications didn't even have an email account. Maybe now they have woken up to the fact that even truly third world countries like Cambodia has better connection. Oh the shame. Oh the loss of face (never admitted of course).

Oh the hubris.  Doubt if Thailand's ASEAN neighbors want to get its connectivity from its rival, having it scan and sanitize data.  Unlike Thailand, Cambodia does not do any filtering.  Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and China filter with varying degrees of success.

That is about the only time.. and kings day that people go crazy. Other times you will never ever see any nationalistic displays in my country. The national anthem is almost never played unlike many other crazy countries. This was probably during European championship or world championship. This does not happen at normal football games. So probably once every so many years.

Rather comical title to the thread, considering most Thais can't swim. Who's running the cable?

Oh gawd, cue the submarine comments

I'm Thai, so I know it to be a fact. Yes, and it was meant to be a joke. As it is amongst most Thais.

I got it - comment was directed at the usual Farang members who cannot help themselves with a submarine comment
