It's not as if there will be any consequences from 45 if the elections don't happen. 

Military regimes and such like are fine with the current USA administration as long as the country is an ally.

Where I come from you earn respect by your actions. He gets none of mine!

...And then Trump leaned towards Prayut and whispered in his ear “Don’t worry, just have the election...I have some Russian friends that can help..” wink wink. 

Even if elections are held in 2018, which many still doubt due to a unforeseen event, they will not be free and fair, the constitution has been set up to favour one side only. The country will never be free until you unload one of the evils.

Maybe just maybe the elected government garnered enough support from people of significant positions and call for a referendum to-write the constitution. There are many establishment elites who dislike the military and want to reduce their power. It is within the realms of possibility.
