Soi Siam Country Club becoming ghost town

PATTAYA:--Much like the American outposts of the Old West after the gold rush ended, the Soi Siam Country Club neighborhood is becoming a ghost town, with businesses shutting down en masse due to the hugely delayed road-construction project.

Nongprue Sub-district authorities responsible for the construction debacle acknowledged after a recent tour of the torn-up thoroughfare that many businesses have shut down. Residents can’t carry on with no customers and their regular patrons don’t generate enough income to live. Those lucky enough to have back-up businesses have already moved on. The less fortunate just went bankrupt.

Mab 1 Community President Thanaporn Luangborisut filed another complaint with the sub-district Sept. 1, claiming the neighborhood is dying from the snail-paced construction that has no end in sight.

Residents also said a man connected to the planting of banana trees in the middle of the soi as a protest has died of a mysterious ailment. But locals believe his death is tied to depression over his business failing.

Seems pretty normal for Pattaya. Apparently the disaster alongside the Sukhumvit Rd tunnel went on for over 2 years and is going to be repeated, TWICE. The marina debacle is being allowed to collapse without any effort to rectify it, the ghost tower obstructing the lookout will apparently be allowed to remain till it falls down, the automated car park farce is still not sorted, the boats still destroy the road to the lighthouse, and on and on and on.

Seems to me that a particular form of bureaucratic ill has afflicted Pattaya. Used to be a great place to party, but apparently descending into chaos.

About 15 years ago a contractor dug up virtually the whole of Siam Country Club Road before putting in hard core and tarmacing it later. Didn't take as long as the current mess but was about a year from memory. OK if you had a motor bike but the current mess can't even be ridden by a motor bike!

They are going to start a street renewal project in the Pattayaland area soon, and we all hope that a similar endless construction site does not occur. An amazing thing that most of these large projects always start just before the high season ! Could it be that the  "powers that be" are trying to drive us out, ala mode of Alfredo Lim in Ermita ?

The topping was super fast and pretty good for a while - It was 2006/7 I think - just in time for the first Honda LPGA at Siam GC! I hope they can keep it but I suppose the golfers and fans just get there from Pattaya by using the Pattaya end of the motorway now. But that road needs fixing anyway - more than the usual dose of disgrace deserved in this case.

From the various RE websites I understand that there are a massive amount of houses on sale. I guess this must have an impact on the prices....

Yes they put the prices up....standard Thai business practice ! [emoji1]

I feel so sorry for those business people who have lost their livelihoods and properties, and the residents who were barricaded out or in by impassable roads over the past 2 years. If only there were some justice in this country that actually stuck to the malfeasants.

I don't know how far down these ghost towns are as I too have avoided the area due to the mess of the construction. Used to visit a couple of restaurants/bars around the lake. The near Sukhumvit end seems to have recovered now, with the road laid and construction finished close to the Railway line. Had a haircut there yesterday.

I toyed with buying a house near Maprachan lake - then decided against it.  I've been thanking my lucky stars for the last three years.

My heart bleeds for those householders/business owners whose lives have been blighted by this corruption and plain stupidity.  If ever the world needed a lesson in failed urban planning, this is it.

Maybe Facebook can secure a happy ending?

About 5-6 years it was a real pleasure to drive down SCC to the lake and back  for lunch  , a relief from Pattaya noise and traffic .

I went there this year and was staggered as to how much it had changed . Almost   a 10 Km  continous ' Soi Buakao '  -no pavments ,  endless

shophouses and businesses .

I'm sure it's all for the better but................
