The Ministry of Interior has instructed all provincial governors to seek cooperation from operators of entertainment business to suspend entertainment activities throughout October in correspondence with the final mourning and Royal cremation ceremonies.

Interior permanent secretary Chatchai Promlert said Friday that the ministry had been informed by the office of the secretary-general of the cabinet regarding all the activities related to the Royal cremation ceremonies as well as guidelines for all entertainment activities throughout October.

He said that entertainment and festive activities should be scaled down, but certain activities such as weddings which were planned in advance could go ahead and should not be held in open space.

Vague wording once again.

Creating more questions than answers.

Are Soi Cowboy, Nana Plaza, Pattaya's strips etc, considered entertainment areas or cultural enrichment places?

Nana was all shuttered up last night as were the farang bars around robin hood. Heavy police presence to so looks like they are praticing on really shutting things down. Apprently it was a relatively unkown buddhist holiday which in previous years would of gone unnoticed. This was about 10 30pm last night so not sure what time they closed.

Yes, yesterday was "Awk Phansa" end of Buddhist Lent, a holiday, but this announcement refers to the funeral of the late King Bhumibol. It will be interesting to see and read more over the coming days. This is not a month for rowdyism and loud music , debauchery and dancing etc.

Smutcakes it was the end of Buddhist Lent, Awk Phansa, and a mandatory alcohol free day since 2015.

If entertainment venues have to suspend their shows etc for a month a whole lot of businesses will go broke. A friend had budgeted for up to four days without a show in his successful bar would now be faced with a six figure salary bill, which he could not afford. This would put 26 people out of work. Sure to get a lot of support for those in power at the promised election. Not.

All previous information put out by government has allowed for shows etc to continue on a cut back form but this new directive seems draconian to say the least.

Yeah...right!

Send them all home for one month!

The girls, the vendors, the cleaning and security, the barkeepers and waiters!

I guess, there will be large handouts for all those who just stop working for a all of October?!

Or should they just go and live off the land?

What's so hard about turning off the neon signs, dimming the sidewalk lighting, turning off the outside speakers, and keeping the doors closed?

...oh yes and asking the door girls to wear more clothes?

Why should there be any mandated obligation to?

If this time is anything like it was a year ago, it meant that bars and such could stay open -- but were not supposed to LOOK open from the outside. So no loud exterior music, and no boozing on the patio, etc. But what was done indoors and without telltale signs on the outside seemed to be OK.

But who knows is that's how things will actually be enforced this time around.

there will be more than a few unhappy tourists.

No one is talking about shutting the whole place down. Just stop the loud music for a week or two and keep things going inside where it's not in everyones face and ears.

Not hard to do in my book.

I won't mind shutting things down a bit while I go pay homage to the king for Oct.

There goes Halloween.  As long as the US and Thailand get an agreement on turkey imports by middle of next month...

Well, realistically there are two more sad events which may be described as relatively imminent.

Best get used to it....

Just a thought: someone was dreaming up BS about a World Cup!

Without further explanation: you see, where I am going with this...?!

And your concept of respect of the particular time is loud music, flashing lights, drunken tourists, half naked women on the streets.

You are aware of the events this months, are you?

Noticed your post got a like from Baboon, kind of fits I suppose.

?

One's concept of respect should be up to the individual not the military. It isn't respect otherwise, is it?

100% wrong. It's nothing to do with the Military.

It's to do with the Thai Nation and their feelings.

Yes, they found a perfectly agreeable solution last October. No idea why they feel the need to reinvent the wheel each time some new problem comes along.

Who is mandating the toning down if not the military?

Let people show their sentiments or not the way they wish to - why does the concept upset you so? Nobody is seeking to prevent your good self from displaying your piety.

Respect is relative, but showing respect in a manner befitting the culture you are within is not. I'm sure there are many different ways of showing respect which differ from culture to culture. If you really want to show respect you should find the way to show respect based on the society you are part of, not what you decide.

Curious, assuming you are not Thai, do you still wai and take your shoes off at appropriate times? Even though these are not your personal ways to show respect (assuming you did not grow up in Thailand).

Yes I do, but then I choose to and there lies the difference.

Why should there not? It is a time of mourning.

Then feel free to go and mourn. Just don't concern yourself with the decisions of others.

If anyone is interested in how police states are maintained, they could do worse than read this thread and the responses from the Thaivisa curtain twitchers...

A few bars here did the 75% pulled down garage door, lights low, music off, otherwise business as usual. There was a huge police road stop within a rocks throw. Zero fecks given, as usual.

That's what I love about this place. Unfortunately, it's also what I hate.

You seem to be mistaking a period of mandated mourning, due to a very important event - with notions of a police state dictating what people should and should not do.

Like it or not, the military happens to be in the role of governing this country, at this time of mourning.  Had it been a democratically elected government - I imagine the situation would remain the same.

In a time of a significant event for this nation - people look to whoever is in charge to give some guidelines and rules for what should happen, and the conduct of businesses during the period.

It is more than just entertainment being closed - the everyday population want to know what is open and closed, when there are gazetted holidays for the funeral for HM, when they can pay respects etc

You seem to be trying to take the topic off in to your own personal feelings with this...

Clearly we are never going to see eye to eye, but I do very much appreciate your not coming to a public conclusion that anybody who sees it the way I do must be some kind of alcoholic sex predator. Kudos to you for that.
