Annoying Soi Dogs

The many who've been bitten and attacked by soi dogs might argue with you on this one.

Maybe so but I would question were they really feral Soi dogs or roaming pets.  I find most aggressive dogs are pets that are out and about.

Not far from me is a guy who has 5 dogs. He feeds them. They hang around his house. Sometimes they roam.  A few are Alpha males and are aggressive but these are pets and not feral Soi dogs.

Pedantic. If they annoy, harass or are in anyway a nuisance then they are not 'pets'. Maybe not strictly 'feral' but it's not important!  Morons like the guy that feeds those 5 dogs are the cause of others fear and discomfort. They can, and do, attack kids, shit and pee everywhere let alone the noise.

I am a great believer in 'Do What Thou Wilt' but NOT if it disturbs others.

What pees me orf more is the old Thai ladies who feed these muts as some sort of 'kindness' when, in fact, they contribute greatly to the problem.

That is the true issue. Same with cats.

Bottom line the OP is challenged to fix his problem.  He risks upsetting an owner of a dog he has removed believing its true feral dog.

I still say many are not cognizant of the difference between a feral Soi dog and a pet that the owner let's roam with packs of others.  Those dogs are the biggest issue.

If someone off'd a true mangy diseased feral Soi dog no one would care but when ol Fido doesn't come back for dinner the issues will begin.

And the foreigners who think they are doing a good thing.....

I think mostly the same whether roaming dogs or feral. Both usually have had the same shitty socialisation when they were young as both roamed. Added aggression can fall into either party. Yes, roaming owned dogs get beaten more so form more fear aggression, but feral dogs go hungry, and can have more health/pain issues relating to aggression

I agree with you but now he believes they are his pets. You off one and you are liable. They know him as the hand that feeds them.  It is the true root of the problem that exists here.  He is a "Part time" owner as I see it.

Yes I guess you're right... how to define 'own' as there is no licensing here (as in the USA) nor a compulsory microchip scheme (as in the UK). Both of those are mere dreams here.

If that guy cannot see that what he is doing is not 'care' (unless he has taken them to the vet, got them vaccinated, cleaned and groomed and micro chipped) it is adding to the problem.

If a dog roams, it's not a pet.  Even if it hangs around someplace to be fed.  We've got a group of them outside our village that the guards use to feed. Were they pets?  No.  We got the guards to stop the feeding and the dogs disappeared.

I understand what you are trying to say, but it's a fine line between the two.  Probably not able to really differentiate between the two easily.

A true pet is never allowed to roam free.

These "part time owners" are exactly what exacerbates the problem.

"Good hearted" enough to feed these animals ( Just disposing of their household scraps usually ) But too 8loody lazy to really take care of them and take responsibility for them. My neighbor has five dogs that live inside his fenced and gated 1.5 rai. They are well cared for and never let out into the street. The only issue is when the gang of neighbourhood dogs come to visit. They sit outside his gate and bark at the captive dogs. This causing more barking and fighting. Luckily my neighbors isn't deaf to this and soon quietens them down.

However even after he  has repeatly asked our other neighbors to control their part time pets nothing is done. Considering he is Thai, weathly and well connected it shows that it's not just farang "guests" that struggle with this. The "neighbors from hell" is not just a Western concept. The less fortunate mass that live around a few decent well cared for homes are the majority here. I regularly see the neighborhood grannies empty rice/leftovers into the middle of the road and wander off. They think they are being kind and see no connection with the flies, rats and torn open refuse bags in the road.

I like dogs, have two cats and don't like to see animals mistreated but unless you can educate the Thai population to be more responsible (:cheesy: ) a nationwide mass cull of these "part time pets" and feral soi dogs is the only answer. Then all cats/dogs should be chipped and dogs licenced. That way the population could be controlled and there would be no arguement as to who's dog it is.

As with the road carnage, refuse dumping, teen pregnancy, drug abuse etc etc the only answer is education from a young age and strict law enforcement to back it up. This will never happen in my or even my great grand childrens lifetime.

Absolutely agree.

As has been mentioned the systemic issue is people finding it in their kindness to feed them.  As with any animal. A food source will keep them close.

The challenge here for everyone Thai and Foreigner is to stop the behavior.  Not likely to happen so each of us will find a suitable way to fix the problem.

For my situation I avoid the Soi with the dogs. Easy enough.  Regardless though when I cycle I have my tazer with me.  I have used it once and it was incredibly affective. The dog was a pet. Gate was open. Dog shot out and bolted at me.  I stopped and zapped it.  Dog yelped and ran.  I went on my way. I have been by that route several times and no dog issues.

The OP is saddled with a daunting task especially if a foreigner alone here.  If he was married and known in the neighborhood he could engage his wife with the locals.  Even for foreigners that speak fluent Thai a wife taking action will carry a bigger stick if she is a good negotiator.

If only. However, as we are all anonymous, how would it be collected?

Congratulations, you get the first 500 baht fine.

I have just spat out my coffee when I saw the word "pet".

The dogs roaming around in packs in Chiang Mai are not pets, not by any stretch of imagination.

I have been confronted with up to 20 dogs, probably all related so they form a vicious pack. They were aggressively snarling at me, ready to attack.

The only thing I believe that saved my was my interpretation of the New Zealand (Maori  Haka).

They ran like hell from me.

There are about 15 or 20 of these dogs without owners living in that big field behind the Russian Night Market for example mabe more and have kind of taken over the soi's and sidewalks in that area traveling in packs . At night they are all over the Russian Night Market and volleyball area across from that Market and on the beach there with all of the visitors to that Russian Night Market feeding them and then in the morning the congregate around where the Russian Night Market people dump the trash . It is so out of control in that area and I watch those dogs become more and more aggressive especially in the day as they travel in packs the side walks and sleep in the streets . Now on my runs I must completely avoid that area and so many other places . It's out of control completely, when I am in Bangkok and run at Lumpini park it is such a relief but when I try to run anywhere in beach area and do any distance the dog problem has really ruined what was once nice and is quite dangerous now getting worse day by day . Any suggestions ?
