webfact
Two Nigerian men arrested with fake passports in Nong Khai Picture: Daily News Nong Khai immigration police on Monday arrested two Nigerian men who were found to be using fake passports. Katego Ofentse Makabane and Wayne Junior Shinbambo, both 35, attempted to cross the border to Laos at the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge. They told immigration officers they were going to the South African embassy in Vientiane. However, when officers checked their South African passports they discovered a number of discrepancies. During further questioning the two men confessed to using fake South African passports and admitted they actually from Nigeria. One man said he had entered Thailand at Phuket Airport while the other said he entered at Padang Besar. The men said a friend in Thailand made the fake passports for them after their original passports had expired. Daily News reported how Africans in Thailand, particularly those from Nigeria, Cameroon, Senegal and South Africa are the subject of increased scrutiny from immigration officers,. The arrest of the two Nigerian men comes a day after a massive joint police operation involving officers from the Tourist Police, Immigration Bureau and Army arrested more than 50 foreigners during raids in Bangkok and Samut Prakan. The majority of those arrested were of African origin and were held for a number of offences related to drugs, fraud and visa overstay. Police said the raids were carried out as part of crackdown on foreigners linked to crime in Thailand and who pose a security risk. Ochomo
"Police said the raids were carried out as part of crackdown on foreigners linked to crime in Thailand and who pose a security risk." Africans are an easy, highly visible target. I refuse to accept the narrative that Africans are the ones most linked to crime in Thailand. They are just easier to target. They have less money, mostly without consular representation, cannot afford lawyers, and honestly, nobody likes them so they can be targeted without cost. Their prison population must be examined against this unfortunate background. I do not condone crime by any race but reading the news, I cannot help but suspect that these raids may have more to do with race than eradication of crime. But again, I may be wrong. Laos is covered by the Bangkok office. If you are going to lie at least do some homework.

Actually, many of Africans are dealing drugs in the Suhkumvit and Khao Sarn Road area. I've been personally offered drugs by Africans and so have others. I know it's tempting for liberals to cry racism, but many Africans really are selling drugs and other illegal activity. Of course it's only some of them, but extra scrutiny can weed out the criminals. That raid last week caught quite a few of them.
klauskunkel
my experience at lower Sukhumvit: the Africans want to sell me drugs the Indians want to sell me shirts the Thai tuktuk wants to take me to a soapie it's never, ever the case that the Africans want to sell me a shirt, or take me to a soapie and vice versa for Indians and Thai. I think they are profiling me, so now I've profiled them. There.

" I know it's tempting for liberals to cry racism " Only about 1.92% of Nigeria's population earn earn above N150,000 monthly. (That's the equivalent of 13,000 thai baht per month. And some of the Nigerian you see around Bangkok are nowhere near old so there's nothing wrong with asking the question how and where did they get the money for the airfare and then come and stay in Thailand for a protracted period unless they are earning money from illicit activities. I will save you time - they are organized gangs that sponsor their foot soldiers with airfaire tickets. The Nigerian maffia is very well known and powerful also in southern Europe. As for that lib boy crying foul about racial profiling - he seems to forget that this is Thailand, where we call things by their right name. No place for brain washed libtards. And some/many of them do not come with "an empty stomach" from a saver country. They are using all tricks, from being a teacher to a student. No racism intended, it's just too much under the eyes of the cops, watching some white men throwing away a cigarette bud. Some Thai female drug mules have to pay with their lives for 100 K. ThaiWai
I have professional experience in these circles and I can tell you Nigerian people are literally the shit of the Earth. They are masters of forgery and fraud and in all circumstances should not be trusted. To the Nigerians who are good people I apologize, I think his name is Bob. But I know who they are. For the life of me I could never understand the allure of Sukhumvit for foreigners who come to Thailand to escape the West. On the few occasions I have been there (usually against my better judgement and will), It was like I was walking down the street in LA or NYC instead of Bangkok. Just a ghetto of various meanings. Of course they're not all that way, but there are loads of them all over Bangkok involved in fraud and drug dealing and the cops and immigration should give them extra scrutiny. The good ones with proper credentials and work permits have nothing to worry about. I've been stopped and had my passport checked too, just for being in out late at night, but I had proper credentials. If they aren't dealing drugs or have fake credentials, then they don't have to worry. Edited October 17, 2017 by garet Grammar, added sentence. bazza73
Racial profiling is done by all police forces - it's just a matter of common sense. When one has a particular nationality which is over-represented in the statistic of drug offences, another in insurance fraud, another in violence, what else would we expect them to do?
