Thanks for all the replies.

So if I need a bit more time (I have until Dec with my current activation anway) I could use the KMS key to upgrade to Pro,  to use for 180 days. But if I buy a Win 10 Pro key I should be able to change the key in Win Home and updrade to an activated Win 10 Pro.

Yes, but not without activating again using KMS. It's easily done with a well known application used for the purpose of evaluation.

But a Retail Pro key will serve for upgrade and activation.

Did you download the linked to image or ignore that too?

Often better to upgrade new releases via media. Better to upgrade to 1709 when you want.

You mean download the media to do a clean install of Windows 10 rather than upgrade from Home?

Yes understand may be better for a clean install, but won't this remove the other things on the pc? think I would rather just try an update and get the job finished, unless there is a major reason not to I am ot aware of. Won't it download the update from microsoft anyway (could always do a clean install if any problem with the update).

Sent messages to a few key sellers, only one replied and said it was ok to update from Home, but by the time I had seen the message they had sold out (several hundred in 24 hrs).

No, there is a new version of Windows 10. Rather than letting it download and install at an inconvenient time, you can run an in place update with the media.

I wrote Upgrade instead of Update. Perhaps my fault for confusing you.

Instructions of how to apply the Update here; http://www.thewindowsclub.com/clean-install-or-upgrade-to-windows-10-using-windows-10-iso

Why did you waste time in asking the seller, when we had already told you??

Just get a key and we'll tell you how to apply it.

Yep, a real good question to the OP. Why was he waiting for an answer if the Pro version key would work on his OS?

That was all discussed already and pretty clear to understand. OP, why don't you want to make a clean install? You get rid off so many things you don't even know that they're on your machine. From Trojan horses, to all sorts of spy programs.

 Download the file here: http://wccftech.com/download-windows-10-fall-creators-update-iso-32-bit-64-bit-officially/

or directly from Microsoft, then insert the key you were always talking about.

You can backup your current system to an external hard drive, using Macrium Reflect 7 ( free) seems to be the best tool.

Here's where you get it, be careful with third party offers, usually always some other stuff with it, sometimes really weird stuff)

https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree

Then you can copy files on your new OS, you can choose how big your partitions are and how many. You'll need a memory stick to create a bootable memory stick that gets you to the program Macrium, even when the PC isn't bootable anymore. Then you boot with Macrium, look for the back up and restore your system. Please don't forget to do that, no matter if you do  a clean install, or an update/Upgrade.

If I were you, I'd also use a memory stick and use Rufus to create a bootable memory stick for your Windows 10 Pro setup with the 1709 update. Then you'll only have to put some programs on and you're good to go.

   https://rufus.akeo.ie/

The whole problem took way too long. Please don't start again that you want to keep your old files, programs. You'll do yourself a big favour with a clean install, without any problems. Good luck, Jack.

One way the other, it is an update, but also an upgrade. From OS version 1703 to 1709. lol-

Thanks for replies. Its only because quite a lot of sellers say the key will only work for a new clean install, most say nothing. One replied and said their key will not work, one said their key would (for upgrade my Win 10 Home to Pro). Not had chance to do it yet, but intend to just change the licence key as Pib did to keep it simple.

As I asserted earlier, there is no need to concern yourself with the UPGRADE from Home to Pro. To do that you can simply add a generic key and the upgrade will take place.

The key that you are purchasing is needed for activation, only.

All done, thanks for the advice.

The upgrade from Home to Pro with the new key took about 15mins, It's now permanently activated with a retail version. After this it started downloading and preparing to update to version 1709 in the background. The actual update after this took about 40 minutes.
