The Supreme Command on Wednesday gave a house to a 49-year-old grandmother and her 10-year-old disabled grandson in Chaturas district of Chaiyaphum province.

Maj-General Thawatchai Chuansomboon, director of the 5th Area's Development Corps, represented Supreme Command General Tharnchaiyun Sisuwain giving the house to Moon Soypao and her grandson, Nattawut Sirikhan, in Ban Nong Loompook in Tambon Nongbua.

Moon said her grandson was born with brain problems, a heart defect and ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

She said her son, the boy's father, died of cancer eight years ago and the mother of her grandson had since disappeared,

Moon said she has been renting house and has been living on a Bt800 monthly allowance for the disabled, but she has recently had no money to pay the rent.

She thanked the Supreme Command for building the house for her.

Thanchaiyun gave Bt70,000 of his own money for the development corps to build the one-storey house on a 100-square-wah plot. The house has one living room, a bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. Theland around it is available for the woman to grow vegetables.

The supreme commander said he had the house built to make merit for His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and to honour His Majesty King Rama X.

Amidst all the tales of greed, theft, dishonesty and violence, it is nice to hear a good news story, that shows the side of Thais that is inherently there, but all too often unreported.

I won't ask where he got the money from, but good on him for doing it, when the State seems unable to do so. I hope they are happy in their new home.
