The ferry service between Chumphon and Koh Tao was suspended on Tuesday due to rough sea conditions as a result of an approaching storm.

Khon Piankoh, assistant to the chairman of Lomprayah High Speed Ferries, said the company had been forced to cancel two trips between Chumphon and Koh Tao, because of high waves in the Gulf of Thailand, but the company would resume normal operations on every route on Wednesday.

The affected ferry journeys were the 10.15am service to Koh Tao and the 1pm service to Chumphon.

He reasoned that the service suspension was because winds in the sea lane between Chumphon and Koh Tao were strong with waves of up to four metres, making it too dangerous for ferry passengers during this period.

The Meteorological Department had issued a warning that a tropical depression in the Gulf of Thailand would make landfall in the South Eastern Region on Tuesday, which would cause high waves and heavy downpours for the entire area.

However, Khon added that the service on all routes would operate as usual tomorrow, as the weather forecast stated that the sea would be calmer.

Meanwhile, the Marine Department sent a notification to all ferry operators for the islands in the South Eastern Region to take the extra caution while going out to the sea during this time, closely monitor weather updates, and check and prepare onboard security equipment to ensure passengers’ safety.
