No problem on Jomtien Beach PATTAYA:-- Despite the assertions of chair and umbrella vendors, Jomtien Beach was buzzing with activity on “no chair Wednesday”. Many families, both foreign and Thai, brought their own beach mats and foldable chairs to enjoy the sun and sea. Others played beach volleyball, swam or ran around. There has been a debate whether the no beach chair and umbrella days benefit the community, with the majority of vendors claiming no one comes out on Wednesdays when they don’t have shade. On Nov. 1, at least, they were wrong. Most Thais don’t rent chairs anyway, nor do families getting together for picnics. So the beach is offering something for everyone during any one week. Jomtien area offers a lot of shops as well, which is convenient for those who wish to have cold drinks or food from nearby restaurants. If you stay over 14 days it makes sense to buy your own chair and umbrella. Every day you stay longer you start making a profit compared to paying 100 Baht a day for a mere rental....Plus you can flog it off on the next disgruntled tourist for a reasonable price, leaving you with a minor profit and a happy feeling you got one over on the mafia. I agree with Lopburi3. You can see a fair bit of the beach in that direction and its fair to assume it would be the same the other way. "... buzzing..." isn't an adjective I would use to describe the scene. Crowed? No. Packed? No. Plenty? No. Smattering? Yes. A few? Yes. Quite a few? No. Not many? Yes. Etc. If you choose to run a business in a tourist area, you're aware of the holidays and seasons and plan accordingly so that you make as much, or perhaps a lot more, than you would running the same or other business in a non-tourist area. Also there are usually several cute young Thai women in the crowd. Use your eyes and iminagination.
