webfact Posted November 13, 2017 Posted November 13, 2017 New sleeping medicine, Etizolam, found in southern border provinces By Thai PBS The Medical Science Department has found for the first time Etizolam, an effective anti-anxiety medicine that is similar to benzodiazepine class of medicines, in three southern border provinces during September and October. Medical Science Department chief Dr Sukhum Kanchanapimai said Monday that ten samples of the new sleeping medicine which were seized by police in Narathiwat and Yala provinces were sent to the lab of the Medical Science Centre for tests. Etizolam which is known by its street name as Erimin 5 or Happy 5 was manufactured by Sumitomo in Japan. An intermediate-acting hypnotic drug, it was first synthesized in 1962 by a team of Hoffman La Roche. But since early November 2015, it has ceased to be manufactured in Japan. UnkleMoooose Posted November 14, 2017 Posted November 14, 2017 Thank you for half a story. Nearly enlightening. The pbs version doesn't give the who, what, when or why either.

connda Posted November 14, 2017 Posted November 14, 2017 Try regulating it instead of demonizing it. Ambian (zolpidem tartrate) is so regulated and expensive as to make it prohibitive for most people to use. But it's non-addictive. Benzodiazepines such as diazepam or lorazepam are handed out like candy at government and amphur hospitals, and are highly addictive. Etizolam is just another class of benzodiazepine-like drugs with high addictive potential. It always seems that Thailand is back-assward on so many issues like this. No surprise. Try supporting the use of zolpidem for sleep issues, make it cost effective, and stop using benzodiazepines in government hospitals and start decreasing the loose supply of benzos to the general public.
edwinchester Posted November 14, 2017 Posted November 14, 2017 I seriously doubt it's being used for sleep or any other prescribed issues. As the street name, Happy 5, suggests it's being used for the happy vibe it gives the taker.
