If you have a yacht and want to moor in Phuket, what are the rules that you have to follow? Find out more from today’s special report:

Phuket is one the of the most popular tourist destinations welcoming 3-5 million tourists by air or land from all around the world each year, yet there are other increasingly popular & maybe nicer ways to travel to Phuket including yachting or sailing. It was recorded in December 2006 that there were 563 yachts reported in and 638 reported out of Phuket’s territories.

If mooring a yacht in Phuket, the foreign captains and passengers all have to go through many processes to have their yacht & papers checked, but a one stop service project for the Phuket Port Control Centre or PPCC was started in October 2006 with the cooperation of the Governor of Phuket, Immigration, Customs, Phuket Marine Office 5 and others.

By the end of September 2007 a new marina may be built by Chalong pier with designated areas for checking, so the one stop system will be fully ready and easier for sailors.

To moor a yacht in Phuket owners have to follow these 2 basic rules:

1. The yacht owner or skipper has to bring their yacht to Chalong pier first to have it checked before sailing out to other marinas.

& 2. A report has to be made to the officers in the Phuket Port Control Centre at Chalong Pier only.

IF the owner or skipper does not follow the law they may be jailed for up to 3 months or fined from 500-5,000 baht or both fined or jailed.

When this one stop service project is fully finished, it should benefit all the users said Surin Theerakulpisut, the Chief of Marine 5 Phuket:

At a meeting on Wednesday 10 January, the officials discussed the current moorings in limited areas and checkpoints for foreign yachts which enter Phuket territory while a few issues were also discussed about fee collection, and about the safety of yacht moorings at Chalong pier which Surin commented on:

Now you may already get more idea about the yacht rules.
