Beware, !!  was stopped at intersection Pattaya Tai and Sukamvit, going towards Kho Tallo. A Cop !!!! (crook) pulled me over, tried to take my bike key and demanded my license. He was dressed like a cop, minus the gun and shinny shoes. I did not let him have my keys or license and asked for his ID. He did not produce an ID so I drove off towards Kho Tallo with him in pursuit. Fearing he would kick me off, I sought refuge on the carpark of Chic Repuplic. He again tried to pull my keys from my bike and aggressively grabbed my arm, I pulled away and rang my wife, pretending she was police, and he drove off.

The Guard at Chic Republic, told me he do most days around 1pm and 3pm !

OP, how do you know he wasn't a real policeman ? Not all traffic police carry guns. Asking for license is pretty standard procedure. As would be taking your keys if you look like you are about to drive off.

If not a real policeman, what good would taking yours keys ? he cant ride 2 bikes home. Do you think its a guy dressing up in a police uniform to collect licenses and keys ?

90% of police would probably ignore a request to see ID, they are police in uniform doing a traffic stop, probably on a police bike as well. Would you know what an ID looked like if he showed you ?

Brown Nose, the good guys always win eh.

You sound like a "special" lol ...ex pat, cop.

Wow, Brown nose and I must be a cop because I have pointed out that you have done a runner from a real cop doing a routine traffic stop.

You do realise that the intersection you got stopped at is about 50m from the Pattaya highway patrol station ! This fake cop must have balls setting up and stopping people out the front of a police station.

I think you were very lucky the cop gave up chasing you.

I think you can probably look forward to a knock on the door in the next few days. A good chance the cop has taken your plate number (or will get it from video at the intersection), it will be handed over to regular police to find owner/renter and pay a visit. Not to mention the plate number is probably on a "look out for list" at every police stop from Jomtien to Nakua.

Have you considered reporting this fake cop to the real police ? I think he would be easy to catch given that he sets up every day at 1pm, 3pm, out the front of a police station.

‘A knock on the door’ a “look out for list” are you serious???

Nothing will come of it, for sure....

Thanks for this, it’s given me a right giggle!

Don't police carry a police badge?

Not that that could not be faked but if no badge, maybe a sign.

Or only some, like detectives have them.

I had a run in with what i believe were fake police but which are worse real police or thugs?

Consider yourself lucky plus you have balls.

Fact of the matter is....Dont let a lone guy with a few bits of "POLICE" uniform, ( that can be bought off the market ) without any ID / Badge, take your vehicle keys of driving license, nor give him money UNLESS your like peter the brown nose. lol  STAND UP and have the balls to say, " I know my rights"

This is slightly OT, as it's not specifically Pattaya related.

About five years ago while walking in Bangkok (Bang Na) in the early evening  about 6pm, I was stopped by a guy who drew up on a motorbike.

He announced he was “police” and started to tell me how dangerous it was to be walking alone.

I laughed and told him in Thai I’d lived in Thailand for fifteen years and had never felt frightened.

As he had no uniform, I was waiting for some sort of scam to start.

I asked him in Thai to see his police ID. He refused. I walked to the rear of his motorbike to see if he had a police registration, there was no number plate at all.

So I proceeded to berate him for have no number plate, and how did I know who he was if he wouldn’t show me his ID?

In the end he called me a stupid ferang in Thai and drove off.

There was a small possibility he could have been genuine, but I doubted it very much.

Most 'real' routine traffic stops don't consist of a single cop on an unbadged, unplated step-through either.

The same tactic has been pulled on Theprassit where another lone cop pulled a farang over and tried to grab the keys apparently. The farang called his bluff and drove off with cop in pursuit. Stopped in a more public location and cop tried it again but the farang already had the keys in his pocket. When the cop got angry, the farang started taking his picture and the cop buggered off.

Maybe it's 'right of passage' thing for newbie cops to be told to bugger off and go and try shake down farangs? If they come back with keys, they get invited to the cops karaoke on Friday night. If they get a license as well, then they qualify for a Sunday soapy.
