Rock star Artiwara “Toon” Kongmalai was warmly welcomed by Ratchaburi people when he arrived at the main stage in Ratchaburi’s Muang district on Saturday and the provincial governor handed him a cheque for Bt12 million.

In a welcoming ceremony at noon, Ratchaburi governor Chayawut Chanthorn officially handed over the cheque, which came from donations raised across the province.

The Ratchaburi provincial hospital is among 11 hospitals for which Toon is trying to raise Bt700 million through his run from Betong to Mae Sai.

As part of the welcoming ceremony, Ratchaburi deputy governor gave Toon a special jar that had a picture of Toon running – and was filled with Bt180,000 in cash collected from Ratchaburi people who had waited for up to five hours to watch the star arrive.

Speaking on the stage, Toon thanked Ratchaburi people for the donations. He reiterated that he is not a hero; the real heroes are doctors and nurses.

He also knelt down and asked the people to clap hands for the nurses on stage.

Toon stayed for about 45 minutes and then continued his run to Phortharam, Bang Pae and Ban Pong districts.

All the governors and the military government in general can learn a lot from this situation. Why does a pop star have to walk the length on Thailand to raise money for hospitals that should be properly funded in the first place?

Even more ridiculous when the Junta says they have enough money for pointless submarines and tanks that they buy from the only country that is a threat around here. If there was ever a conventional conflict around here then the Chinese in Beijing would just flip a switch at their Ministry of Defense and all the subs they sold everyone would just sink.....blimey.

Personally there is something just not right about  this. All w see in the publicity but not the real picture. How do we not know he isn't; jumping into a vehicle  after leaving towns?

It's  not often we see a Thai guy fully committed to something and complete it.

If hes's genuine good luck to him

Ask the people waiting to greet him on the way if he drives by in a vehicle.

Ask the media who follow his every step.

Thai guys not fully completing something you say -ask my brothers-in law and the houses they have built, pick-ups they have paid for and their families they have fed and cared for along with their wives.

You might easily check it out, just by running with him and watching his moves. Just run along...

I applaud this guy if all he says he means.

I do hope there is some sort of auditing on these monies as I want to see it go where it is needed.

Bit concerned at the vultures circling

I am not a betting man normally, but I would put money down that there will be more money reaching the areas where it is needed by this sponsored run that that of any donations made the the big global charities such as Red Cross, etc.

It is shameful how much critical money is siphoned from the cause by these large charities for admin purposes. I understand people need to be paid but that shouldn't happen through donations IMO.

Of course this is a very good thing to give 12 million Bath to charity, but I guess that this also puts him in the scope of beeing one of the unusual rich persons.

Nobody is asking what that money came from. Just hoping everything is done alright.

Where did 12 million baht come from?

Why does the hospital need 700 million.

I'm reminded of Suthep and his sacks of money.

Yes, has there ever been an inquiry what happened to all the money Suthep collected?

Terry Fox lost one leg to cancer and at the age of  22 embarked on a nationwide run to raise money for a cure to this insidious disease. He ran  for 143 days and completed  5,373 Km before his illness returned and forced him to quit his journey. At that time he had raised $1,700,000.  Terry fox died of cancer seven months later.

To date the Terry Fox Run has raised $650,000,000. for cancer research.

People generally are more impressed with actions than words.  Khun Toon has made more effort to improve his nation in a single afternoon than many Thai politicians do in a life time.  Much  Respect to him.
