PHUKET: Work on installing flood drains on Patong’s Soi Nanai are to be complete in one week following nearly a month of delays, Chief engineer of the project Piya Pikulthong confirmed on Sunday (Dec 3).

“Now the construction of the drains has reached its final stage. We are using backhoes to do road resurfacing, then we will install three pipes and finish the road surface,” said Mr Piya.

“After that there will be smoothing of the road surface, which will be transferred to another company. It is expected that it will take about a week until the completion of the whole project,” he added.

And a week after completion we shall witness how ineffective the news drains are. Thailand is totally lacking in engineers having suitable hydrology/catchment anaylsis/civil qualified or understanding.

The annual  Bkk proposed solutions and obvious failures, same for Pattaya, Phuket and I can only assume every other area in the country only confirms their incompetence.

Oh come on Psimbo, you've been here long enough to know that much of what these guys say is a "crock".

I've watched that progress over the weeks and it has been painfully slow and to think that it will be completed, along with the road "smoothing" in a week is wishful thinking or nonsense, take your pick.

Reminds me of the yearly promises that the Police station would not be flooded any more because of the new drains being laid and the flood prevention measures...........seven years later, it still floods as do some surrounding roads.

Guess what.......a week has gone by and the "smoothing of the road" hasn't even begun yet, making it hazardous for scooter/bike riders alike when trying to navigate this area where one third of the road is a few inches higher than the rest, and the tarmac "fill-in" is dangerous.

When you have the governor making remarks about how bad the drainage in Patong is, you know it's really bad!

So bad that they digging the mud and some concrete out of these newly laid drains!!

Yes, some of the metal covers have been removed and an excavator is digging out mud/rubbish/concrete by the bucket-load.

The heavy downpours we had some nights ago must have brought down mud/silt/sand by the lorry-loads and the drains are clogging up already by the look of what they are hauling out. Forgive this play on words, but, "we had better get more ambulances at the bottom of the cliff".

Would be nice to think that someone would have surveyed the land/hills up from Nanai to see where this was coming from and had put measures in place to stop it??

Dream on .... just zero planning. Zero interest in planning. Piss poor planning.

Don't need to wait until it's tested as it is clearly obvious they have zero understanding or expertise in what they are dealing with other than to talk it up, fail and repeat the same over and over.
