BANGKOK, 11th December 2017 (NNT) – Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has lauded the government’s economic policies after the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) hit a 33-month high in November.

Government Spokesperson Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said later the prime minister had expressed his satisfaction over the survey which found that consumer confidence improved for the fourth consecutive month in November to its highest level in 33 months.

The growth rested on a better than expected economic outlook in the third quarter, hefty exports, rising tourism, and most importantly the government’s economic measures including the “Shop for the Nation” campaign and the welfare card scheme.

The survey was conducted by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.

The spokesperson asserted that the government is focused on bolstering the grassroots economy, generating income for the poor, and stabilizing the prices of agricultural products.

Lt Gen Sansern added that overall economic growth is expected to be significant in the second quarter of 2018.

Citing a World Bank report, he said Thailand is no longer a low-income country and is moving towards economic stability, while noting that the nation is closing its social gap and improving social welfare and health services.

But not coming near matching the index during Yingluck's regime that had a high of almost 85 nor the lows experienced by the military government that hadn't appeared since 2009.

So congratulations for restoring some of the confidence. Whether the new level is temporary or permanent will depend in part on whether fair and open elections are held next year.
