PromptPay computer error causes frenzy on last day of 2017 as transfers fail

A TECHNICAL glitch knocked out the popular PromptPay money transfer service for seven hours yesterday morning, causing frenzies on social media, especially among people waiting for money transfers on the last day of 2017.

People on social media said money had been debited from their accounts using the government-sponsored platform but the recipients at the other end had not received the funds. That prompted the Bank of Thailand to issue a statement clarifying the situation in which it said a computer error transfiguring the last day of 2017 into that of 2018 had wreaked havoc.

According to Chantrawan Sujaritkul, the central bank’s spokesperson, the glitch happened at about 7am yesterday, after which Wanna Noparporn, managing director of National ITMX Co, which operates the PromptPay platform, said the problem would be fixed quickly.

The national money transfer service returned to normal at about 2.30pm yesterday. The central bank said users should not worry as everyone would receive their funds.

Promptpay money transfer system broke down for several hours on Sunday morning, causing many bank customers unable to transfer their money to their receivers.

However, at about 3.35 pm, most commercial banks put up notices in the social media to announce that the money transfer service has resumed as normal.

Earlier, Bank of Thailand spokesperson Mrs Chanthawan Sucharitkul said that Promptpay service was disrupted starting at 7 am and the central bank had notified the National ITMX Company which provided the Promptpay service to commercial banks to fix the problem.

BANGKOK — The celebratory mood was dampened for those who rely on the national electronic payment system when it abruptly stopped working without explanation.

Since Sunday morning, those transferring money via PromptPay realized payments left their accounts – but never reached the recipient. The money just disappeared.

Thai Banks - a master class of inefficiency; Victorian practices and contempt for their customers.

I have had some small issues with banks here but had far worse in USA...

However - I have only seen very friendly workers and not a shade of contempt. Our local bank employees are quite helpful and at some branches have a greeter who will fill in the forms and at others the tellers or management does it for you... I feel spoiled by good service.

BKK bank is back into their old ways again....this time a transfer to my bank took 6 days. It was good for a while after complaints about this on one of the forums on here, and monies were received the next day as it should be...

Oh well....

Happy New Year to all.

Considering how banks react when they don’t get their money on time, that’s a bit cheeky...

Ah great things in front of us with the cashless society and all. :sad:

Considering that the money was debited from accounts and not received by those it was sent to, everyone indeed was cashless...for a while anyway.

as a career IT guy, this demonstrates remarkable incompetence;

back in the usa, the transition from 1999 to 2000  (the effort boiled down to a standard 1 year addition with a huge amount of checking, no huge code rewrites)

was initiated Way in advance and as a result there were no problems;

that is just simple managerial foresight

I'm lovin it, and my Christmas wish is for it to keep failing. Then the sheeple might wake up to what is happening. :clap2:

It used to be silly tourists that thought they could visit LOS with just a credit card, till the card got lost, stolen or eaten, but now it's millions of people that will suffer for putting unearned faith into systems that can fail because of one wrong line of code.

Mmmm.... and yet the “norm” in Thailand is for things to happen without explaination, so why worry?.... maybe to many Thais are starting to think like farangs

i wonder if any disgruntled users contacted the anti scamming task force.... they did recommend contacting them ASAP, after all, with any concerns ???

My experiences here are the same as yours. Friendly, helpful, and on the whole very efficient and effective.

Sadly the UK banks aren't that anymore and are becoming less and less customer sensitive and focused IME.

I just made a direct payment from my AUstralian Bank to a fims account in Australia.  4 days later not credited, they told me it can take a week I had forgotten our slow banks.

Every month I make a few online transfers here with my Thai bank (Bangkok Bank) , straight through and available the minute I press enter.
