Retirement Visa for Mum and Dad

Recommended Posts

It seems I am never off this forum. I now have my mum and dad wanting to come over and stay full time.

They are 67 and 68 respectively and have spent the last 2 months in a rented house in Hua Hin. They love the weather and people.

They are looking to come over full time. They are Scottish UK citizens. They do not have a Thai Bank account as yet.

My dad is going to come over for and also requires a Knee Replacement. My mother is fit and well. They have made the decision to have the operation here. This is due to UK waiting lists and the fact they have just sold their house in Scotland and have nowhere to live as of March.

My dad has a private pension and my mother has a government pension as she was a school teacher. I am unsure how much they receive but expect its OK.

What is their best opition regarding a visa?

Thanks.

Since the are both over 65 they could get single entry non-o visas in the UK before traveling to here.

Then one of them could apply for an extension of stay based upon retirement and the other could apply for an extension based upon the others  for being a family member.

For the retirement extension it will require 800k baht in a Thai bank account in the applicants name only or 65k baht income or a combination of the 2 totaling 800k baht.

Is there a timescale the money requires to be in the Thai Bank? Is there another method using a UK bank?

It needs to be in the bank for 60 day for the first extension.

One of them could apply for a OA long stay visa at the embassy in London and use funds in a bank there.

See: http://thaiembassyuk.org.uk/en/non-immigrant-visa

The other one would get a non-o visa and then apply for and extension for being their family member.

The OA visa allows unlimited one year entries for a year from the date of issue. It is possible to get a total stay of 2 years from the visa by doing an entry just before the visa expires,

Separate from the visa issue, have they planned on how they're going to handle medical issues, health insurance, etc?

Things do start going wrong health wise, after 60 (50? 40?   Whatever??).

I have spoken to them many times regarding this. I have told them to get the best insurance available. Im 45 and covered to 5 million through Bupa Thailand. I belelve they have just been bought over.

So a OA for either parent and an O for either parent then come over and convert to a Retirement Extension and another Retirement Extension based on wife/husband (farang) living here. This is the best option?

Thanks

If one of them gets the OA visa they will not need to apply for an extension for almost 2 years if they use the visa to its full extent.

The other one will get an extension that is equal to the length of stay remaining from the first one year entry form the OA visa.

Are there border bounces required?

Only when the 1st one year entry is about to end would there be a need to leave and re-enter to get a new entry prior to the date the visa expires.

Thanks Ubonjoe. I basically want them on Retirement Extensions so they can do 90 day reports. It makes it easy for them. The simpler the better. Haha.

The 90 day reports are still needed with OA visa. Same for the one that is based upon the entry from the OA visa as their spouse.

As said the O-A visa is a one visa (O) with a year extension pre approved (A) that you receive on any entry during the one year validity of a multi entry O-A visa.  You are required to do 90 day address reports if you do not exit Thailand for more than 90 days.

I looked on their website and it seems that 5 million is the maximum that one can get from there. Is there any insurance in Thailand that offers unlimited coverage?

I mean i have an insurance for the worst case, what's the point of having an insurance with just 1 million coverage... and even 5 is quite low

Can you leave Thailand or is it a single entry?

I am researching getting an OA visa from the Thai Embassy in Canberra , the form says

 When you have prepared all the original documents as required, you must then make 2 copies of each document.

 Afterward, you must separate the documents into 3 sets. Within these sets, you should arrange the documents in the order given above.

All together you will have 1 set of the original documents and 2 sets of copies.

 You must take all 3 sets to a Notary Public to bind and notarize each set.

The binding and notarization of documents must only be done by a Notary Public or Justice of the Peace.

I asked the Embassy to clarify who could certify the docs and I received 2 answers from 2 emails.

1 Photocopied documents must be certified as true copy of the original by a Justice of the Peace or Commissioner for Declarations.
2 Documents certified by a Justice of the Peace OR a Notary Public will be accepted
You have a choice.

Going to a Notary Public is going to nearly cost me the price of an international air ticket, im guessing the JP may not charge as much or perhaps not at all.
Has anyone received an OA visa in Australia able to give me an insight with the ease or nightmare with your application process?

How long does it normally take to receive a OA visa if all paperwork is in place?

At the embassy in London your apply the morning of one day and pick it up the next morning if you apply in person. By post about a week total.
