BANGKOK — Khaosan Road looked a little different Wednesday. Women were showing a lot more skin beneath the glow of Japanese and Chinese signs featuring titillating images and stalls were selling lingerie and sex toys. The problem with this dystopian scene, a sci-fi trope since Blade Runner, was that the foreign production company behind it told the police it would not be identified as Thailand. In addition to having their set demolished, the filmmakers today were charged with three offenses including public indecency for misrepresenting their sexy market scene. samsensam Posted January 18, 2018 Share Posted January 18, 2018 what's interesting is that pretty much every tourist knows khao san road is a backpacker area but many thais think it is a red light area. bizarre. any local upset about image should take a look at sukhumvit road, and i believe pattaya - though i've never been there myself. there's none so blind as those who dont want to see. Indo Bangkok Film Co Ltd was on Wednesday seen filming scenes, between 9.30am and 11.30am, featuring women wearing revealing costumes selling what appeared to be sex toys. Placards were set up displaying the words “Adult Toys” and “Sex Toys” as well as photos of near-naked women. The filming was recorded by Pu Banglampoo, who posted a video clip on Facebook that went viral yesterday. Pol Colonel Pitak Suthikul, police commander of Chanasongkram Police Station, said that the film company on Tuesday asked police for assistance and permission because they wanted to film scenes for the movie “Happy Bhag Jayegi Return (2018)” on Khaosan Road. The film apparently was intended for distribution in India. The crew showed their permission form from the Tourism Authority of Thailand in which the department clearly asked the team to be aware not do anything that caused a negative impact on Thailand’s tourism. Pol Colonel Puwadon Unpho, deputy traffic commander at the same station, said he had been informed that the movie’s location would be identified as China, not Thailand. “I was briefed on the details of the scenes and told that the firm had already shot several scenes in Thailand in many areas,” he said. However, Pitak said that when he saw the scenes and items to be displayed on Wednesday, he ordered the shooting to stop immediately because the photos, items and placards were not appropriate. He then had officers file four charges against the firm. The company is based in Pattaya and has two executives, one Thai and one Indian. Both executives were yesterday reportedly on their way to acknowledge the charges. The filmmakers were charged with offences including not following authorities’ orders, exporting or disseminating pornographic movies for commercial purposes, and acting indecently in public. " Based in Pattaya and it never occurred to them that they could have probably gotten even better shots just by walking down Walking Street with a camcorder ? Sheesh, they could have even had the "actors" doing their scenes on the street and nobody would have noticed (or cared), (as long as it wasn't overt sex acts). Have a little wander down the lower numbered end of the Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok of an evening and you will see street sellers blatantly selling sex toys and the like. Or Walking Street or many other streets in Pattaya, Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy etc. etc. in Bangkok and many, many other places in Thailand, where women and men flaunt scantily dressed bodies and sex is for sale openly. Get real, the powers that be in Thailand. Come to think of it, what kind of image did films like the Hangover Series and many others portray of Thailand. This seems like small fry and probably associated with the size and content of brown envelopes and doubtless will do nothing to encourage future productions. Even when filming inside a private home, two of three trucks, sometimes with trailers, parked outside is the minimum. if the description is adequate and the authorities did not deem it necessary to ask further, I do not understand why then someone would have the authority to stop the film making. The process of the permission granting could be questioned, but not the permission itself. Hardly one officers' personal opinion should be overruling a permit granted by proper authorities?
