There was also a huge revenue surge after the Bush tax cuts. Much (most?) of that can be tied to capital gains both for individuals and for companies - particularly companies that were holding large amounts of cash abroad. Wealthier individuals and corporations are cashing in now that capital gains taxes are lower, But it's a one time thing.  And since capital gains cuts and the income tax cuts benefit mostly the wealthiest Americans,  I doubt this revenue surge is going to signify much in the way of income growth for most working Americans.

Poll: most Americans aren’t noticing a tax cut in their paychecks

Two months after Republicans passed sweeping tax legislation, just a quarter of Americans report seeing a change in their paychecks. Unsurprisingly, those on the higher end of the pay scale are likelier to have noticed an increase in their take-home pay, compared to those at the lower end.

A Politico/Morning Consult poll released on Wednesday found that 25 percent of registered voters say they have noticed an increase in their paycheck under the new tax law; 51 percent say they haven’t seen any change, and 24 percent aren’t sure.

I must have missed it. What changed with respect to capiatl gains taxes in the new tax plan?

April was best month in history for U.S. budget, according to CBO figures

A spokesperson for the CBO said,

“Those payments were mostly related to economic activity in 2017 and may reflect stronger-than-expected income growth in that year,” the analysts said in their monthly budget review. “Part of the strength in receipts also may reflect larger-than-anticipated payments for economic activity in 2018. The reasons for the added revenues will be better understood as more detailed information becomes available later this year.”

https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/may/7/cbo-says-april-was-best-month-history-us-budget/

American's number one concern in the 2016 election was the economy. Perhaps the GOP can run on this for the 2018 mid-terms.

MAGA 2020 !!!!!

April is the month when income tax payments are made.  It is always an outlier.  CBO estimates still have the deficit for this fiscal year at over $800 billion, next year at $980 billion, and  future deficits over a trillion.    https://www.cbo.gov/system/files/115th-congress-2017-2018/reports/53651-outlook.pdf

Thanks for the correction. I confused the reduction in corporate taxes with capital gains.

I have no idea what this means.

It means if if a given "press"outlet is only representative of a given set of ideas, values, information; if it pushes one type of narrative, suppresses others, it is not really an impartial news gathering agency. It is in the punditry or marketing business. The best that could be said for it is that it is a member of the political press.

Has there ever been a press outlet that corresponds to this ideal of impartiality? The best you can hope for is one that is scrupulous with its facts, includes facts that run counter to the biases of its reporters and writers,  and readily acknowledges its infrequent errors. And it's always well to recall Stephen Colbert's assertion to the effect that "It's a well known fact that reality has a liberal bias."

I think the LA Times is probably the best newspaper in America. They walk the line pretty well between political groups, special interests while still giving factual information mostly free of editorialising(unless declared as such) and their local and regional news is very good.

edit: it should be noted they are paying a price for such. Their finances are a basket case and new owners may turn the whole paper upside down.

' I can smell collusion coming up.'      Cohen got also money from AT&T, Novartis and others. The oligarch is living in Switzerland. Novartis is a Swiss company. In your logic Trump colluded with these company's? Or even worse, with Switzerland? You see, it doesn't make sense. What we will learn soon, Trump had nothing to do with those payments. Easy.

Actually it's great news. And here it's why. Democrats are too busy with that nonsense to prepare themselves for the midterm elections. And when they wake up, it's easy too late. Isn't that funny?

Actually it's great news for another reason. It really looks like access peddling if not influence peddling, which is something the Clinton's did with regularity and were never held accountable for. When Trump goes down in flames he's going to drag all that up and maybe once and for all America can come out from under the stink of that particularly corrupt political dynasty. Hopefully as many pols and their funders from both parties will get dragged into it and the exodus of Congresspersons will continue and accelerate. It's scorched earth but a scorched earth sanitizes at least.

Poll: Democrats and Republicans Neck and Neck on Generic Midterm Ballot

"Since February, Democrats’ lead in the generic congressional ballot dropped from 16 points to only 3, the poll found, which was conducted May 2 to May 5 by telephone".

"Support for or disapproval of the president’s policies has played a major role in shaping voters’ decisions on whom to vote for in November, with close to two-thirds of voters saying Trump is an extremely or very important factor in their congressional vote".

"Republicans have been on edge about predictions of a blue wave in November, especially after Democrats did better than expected in several special elections that should have been shoe-ins for Republicans"

Trump rescues NK detainees. What a champion.  First term as a new politician with zero experience and he's kicking goals that polllies should kick.

Let's see what else is achieved. Good or bad. Can't please everyone but I'm sure the 3 released are enjoying a Big Mac today.

Have a supreme day everyone.

Crowd at Indiana rally cheers when Trump suggests he deserves an 'extension' on his presidency beyond two terms

Standing in front of a cheering crowd at a campaign rally in support of Mike Braun, the Republican nominee for Senate in Indiana, President Donald Trump quipped about extending his presidency past a second term.

No. The Tiny Don administration is hellbent on destroying the environment, to promote industry. Little Don has never said no to a lobbyist as president. Not once. He has no principals, nor any vision, so why would he? He is perhaps the most dangerous man on the planet right now as it appears he is trying to lower the quality of life, for everyone on earth, and his policies are making both America and the world less great, and more dangerous.

Thankfully, he will not remain in office for more than 12 more months. Resignation, impeachment, or prison, are in his future, and many of us will be very, very thankful for that.

Tiny DT. The art of moving America backwards, and lowering the quality of life for the average American.

The art of I cannot make a deal to save my life.

The art of losing talent in droves, and replacing them with sycophantic fools, devoid of talent or experience.

The art of attempting to lead a nation, while being infected with the thinnest skin of a world leader, in history.

The art of not having a diplomatic bone in his body, and destroying long held alliances, with hate, hubris and a horrible lack of intelligence, vision and talent.

" the Trump administration may have played into Pyongyang's history of "hostage diplomacy," harshly criticized by National Security Adviser John Bolton when Barack Obama was president."  http://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/politics-government/white-house/article210776244.html

Under Obama US citizens Euna Lee, Laura Ling, Kenneth Bae and Matthew Todd Miller were released from North Korea. There may have been others, these are just the ones I found doing a quick search.  Obama, and other Presidents, did not make a media circus out of it because they understood that would reward North Korea for the unlawful detentions.

Trump, on the other hand, loves a media circus.  So does Kim Jong Un, I'm sure he's enjoying the reward for his human rights abuses.

President Trump is a breath of fresh air from all of the generic politicians running in that 2 horse race.

He beat them all and is trying to carry out his mandate which is being thwarted by sour grapes and hysteria.

Trump's party controls the Senate and House of Representatives.  The investigations in no way prevent him from doing his job, and wouldn't bother him unless he knew there was some really bad stuff he's done that can be found out.

Nothing is preventing Trump from carrying out his incoherent mandate but his incompetence and ignorance.

“We have delivered, one of the only times ever, more than we promised,”

“Our new slogan for 2020. You know what it is? ‘Keep America Great.’ Because we’re doing so well that in another two years when we start the heavy campaign, ‘Make America Great Again’ wouldn’t work out too well.”

"How do you talk about the economy when the economy is good"!

"Democratic campaign operatives have acknowledged that running against Donald Trump and the White House controversy du jour -- at the expense of more substantive policy issues -- could weaken their advantages heading into November’s midterms. And complicating their case further are signs of economic improvement, including recent labor statistics showing national unemployment at a near-20-year low of 3.9 percent".
